The work this guy did on this is trully amazing...a engineering tour de force.

My favorite part was when he machined the crankshaft on an eccentric.

Y'know, I bet that little v-12 puts out more horsepower than my old Rover. :g:

I'm a little confused (well, I'm often a lot confused). I see it's mounted on box which may contain the fuel and their appears to be a fuel line going into the engine, but where's the spark coming from? We need a spark, no?

The smallest one is driven by compressed air so it's not a true engine. But the one posted by Maxman is a real one.

Here's a tangential thought.... have you ever thought of the correlation between the number of cylinders and exhaust tone, to the tones produced by musical instruments? I've always thought a 3-cylinder sounded a lot like a bassoon, a 4-cylinder like a clarinet, and a good v8 like a trombone. Listen to one of Honda's 6 cylinder 250 GP race enginces from the 60s and you'll almost hear a flute.

I bet it has something to do with the resonant frequencies and harmonics.

@Nanuq, yes. I am still trying to put my finger on "Boxer" engines (Porsche/Subaru). They almost have a "string" instrument quality like a standup bass/viola/cello.

You got it... there's another resonance in there that makes it hard to name. Maybe a cello standing on a soapbox?

+1 on that Honda F1 '60's vintage....I had the good luck to find a pit pass in the mud during the '67 USGP at Watkins Glen, and I hung out in the Eagle pits gabbing with Dan Gurney...

Every time the Honda came around, everybody plugged their ears!!....

As a side note: The pit next to Eagle was the Cooper Maserati one with Jochen Rindt driving...The engine in it was a V12 with 3 spark plugs per cylinder....Each separate distributor had different colored wires.. They actually did a complete plug change mid race to cure a mis-firing situation....They did it in @ 2 minutes!!

Here's one of the plugs I salvaged out of their trash bin!!:

A Champion G-59-R "Peanut" plug....When you need to get 3 plugs into a head of a 1.5L V-12, you NEED skinny ones!!

NICE!!! That's a piece of history there.

My motorcycle was built by Honda's El Maestro, who was trained by Kaz Yoshima. I've got a bunch of Ti parts in it that came home from Suzuka in the late 70s. More history.

The engine was strong, but not quite right... then I talked to Kaz and he found out who had built it, and got all excited. He hand-bent me a pipe to match the engine, and the results are spectacular. It starts off sounding like one of the Three Tenors, and when it breaks 7,500rpm it sounds like a coronet on steroids. It curls your toes, partly from the sheer volume, and partly from the pure resonant tone it makes.

There's just nothing like a strong engine with correct tuning.

Holy crap!!! Oh my Lord. That was glorious. My favorite is the Matra MS80. Did you hear how it tuned up as he hit the sweet spot in 2nd gear and then 3rd? Lordy Lordy Lordy, it sounds just like my '63 Land Rover. ;)
