Are all Valjoux 72's the same

I'm just wondering if there is anything to look out for when sourcing these movements for Daytona replacements

Any tips for a rookie on which watches are the best or what to avoid.

OS is correct. Be very careful when picking up a donor watch for your project. Parts can be very expensive and the service itself is also quite pricey. It's often hard to tell from pictures, but make sure whatever you are looking at is clean inside, without any obvious rusting or missing parts.

You do not want the v72c or v730, both of which have calendar date complications which would have to be removed. I also never did get confirmation from anyone that they would actually be an option even after removing the complications.

I believe v72, v722, v726 and v727 should work without issues.

You can also look for the Certina, Longines and Wittnauer movements (among others) which are not always labeled as v72s but actually are. Here are a few that I believe will work from my research:

Certina 29-052

Certina 29-0531

Certina 29-063

Longines 330

Wittnauer 13W-2

If you are shopping on eBay the only chance you have at getting one for a decent price is to find someone that didn't know what they had when they posted the listing. Anything that is actually listed as having a v72 will always go for a premium price these days. Good luck with your search!

Nice! I was just following that exact one on the bay. You must have won it at $775. I almost thought about bidding on it, but decided to do more research and look at some other options like mentioned above.

I too saw this... I thought the price was cheap. I have some Valjoux 23 options from a local watchmaker. But if the cost will be the same. I'll pursue Valjoux 72

You should be OK with Valjoux 72s from the early 1960s and later. I know some guys who have had issues fitting 1950s-era V72s into Daytona cases, due to thicker plates. And, no, I'm not confusing these movements with the Valjoux 71.

If you're a real stickler for detail, use an 18000bph movement for a 6239/6241 build, and find a 21600bph movement for the later 6263/6265s.

As LHOOQ stated, not all V72 movements are the same and some won't fit in the early Daytona cases. I ran into this with a 50s Heuer- the one on the left in this pic

The case is 38 mm and the plates of the movement are too large for it to fit in a 6239 case. I've heard of this on one other occasion so you do have to be careful.
