Guest tomas415
Is it OK to build a franken 1016 explorer from a gen 1601 case???
1680
Yes you can, but personally I wouldn't. My advice: use the search function! This topic has been discussed a few times already. But the problem is, I am a nice person, so here is one example, an Explorer built with a 1601 case. http://www.rwgforum.net/topic/128495-understated-and-basic-project-1016-wrap-up/ Best thing you can do is to go through all of LHOOQ's threads: http://www.rwgforum.net/blog/9/entry-27-the-repository-of-threads/ My 2 cents: - depending on the shape (how polished) the case is, enlarging the lugholes to 1,2mm is not always possible - the rehaut is shallower compared to the 1016 - caseback is too small The 1601 out there (eg ebay) might be tempting, but to be honest, for this money there are better cases out there is one good case out there, ask JMB. automatico
"depending on the shape (how polished) the case is, enlarging the lugholes to 1,2mm is not always possible" +1 from experience (but I went to 1.3mm)
preacher62
This is a 1016 made with JMB's case. He also did the drilling and manufactured the, very nice, bezel. The 1601 case is way too thin and the lugs are too pointed. The gen 1016 case is something between a 16000 and a 16200 which is the modern Datejust. There's really nothing like it, as LHOOQ has pointed out. JMBs case uses the ETA 2824 movement and is pretty close. Bulopha
If you need a gen smooth bezel for plexi crystal - let me know have one left.

preacher62
Be sure to look, carefully, at the smooth bezels for plexi DJs and for 1016s. You will see that they are quite different. When JMB made his first one there were several iterations before it was spot on. A 1016 with a DJ bezel does not look right.

preacher62
It's beautiful! Thing is...if you look at 1016s on the bay, they are not that thin. They are not even as thin as a 16000.
