Royal Oak Posted June 9, 2013 Report Posted June 9, 2013 I've owned many a Rolex rep over the years of many types and qualities from all our dealers. The one consistant problem that send them to the watchmaker is the markers falling off the face. Does this EVER happen with Gens?
Watchmeister Posted June 9, 2013 Report Posted June 9, 2013 Not in my experience and that includes a '50's bubble back, '66 5512, '80's 16520, etc.
sneed12 Posted June 9, 2013 Report Posted June 9, 2013 Gen dials have different construction--the markers aren't "cups" like a rep, they're "rings." The lume is painted right on the dial, it's much harder for it to come off.
automatico Posted June 9, 2013 Report Posted June 9, 2013 I have stuck a few applied markers and coronet emblems on genuine watches over the years. I have stuck a LOT of replica markers back on and sometimes just the luminous stuff when it falls out of the marker.
correctime Posted June 9, 2013 Report Posted June 9, 2013 Markers comming off a gen ? Like Freddy said....that's a rare occurence. I've never had it happen to me, nor have I ever heard of it happening.
dan_189 Posted June 10, 2013 Report Posted June 10, 2013 May make some people cringe including myself, but its interesting to read: http://www.minus4plus6.com/ouch.htm One article talks about a marker coming off if the watch is dropped... *shudder!*
SSTEEL Posted June 10, 2013 Report Posted June 10, 2013 (edited) Quite extreme circumstances though from that link. I spot a single hole too, so if these were rings, not cups, how/where does this ring mate with the hole above? Edited June 10, 2013 by SSTEEL
tomhorn Posted June 10, 2013 Report Posted June 10, 2013 (edited) It happens ... this is a gen dial in my franken trying to imitate the FM Crazy Hours ... Edited June 10, 2013 by tomhorn

gavidoc Posted June 16, 2013 Report Posted June 16, 2013 On real dials they are cups just like on reps. The big difference though is that on real dials the cup posts go all the way through the dial and they are soldered on from the back. Once that is done the remaining bit of post is ground down. As a result each cup is attached very firmly to the dial. Most reps just have small holes drilled but not all the way through. They are the glued in place.
