1016 hands

Hi all,

I remember having read something in here (?) on the subject of Explorer I hands. If memory still serves me well someone had succeeded in fashioning one correctly sized minute hand out of two shorter ones. I have tried searching but can't, for the life of me, find a clue.

The short version is that I'd like to know if there is, to your knowledge, anyone in our forums able to do this; and If not, whether the usual workaround would be alternatively TC (but his minute hand is still a tad too short), or a gen Sub hand.

Thanks in advance for any pointer/advice and whatnot.

Lo' that is a hot topic indeed!

I do not remember reading something here about stitching a minute hand.

It would be great to have TC for instance to offer long minute hands only, which would match the same lume color with his hour and seconds hand.

Ordering something from the usual manufacturers would require some solid budget I guess 1.5k? for a 100pcs minimum order including tools preparation etc.

Someone has a short line to TC (good relationship) to check with his possibilities regarding along minute hand only? It is best to have him for instance as the tools and sizes are already there, the only adaptation may be in the length.

Seems like I remember JoeyB doing the hand mod for his Sub. I am in the middle of 1016 build part 2 and have a set of sanded and re-lumed TC hands but would be interested in other options.

How long does it need to be ? 13mm?

In the reference pic it's how long?

I'd say about 1mm longer than a 5513 minute hand. Here's how 5513 hands look on my 1016:

If that would have been 1016 hands they should just have touched the minute hashes.

To me this is no big deal anymore. See so many 1016s for sale with replacement sub hands. But would of course be cool if there was a source for aftermarket hands!

Clark's hand looks spot on but that could depend on the angle from the which the pic was taken. Alligoat: Does the minute hand reach past the minute marker?

TC hands: Perfect for a 16610 build, not so for a 1016. Would he accept crafting a set with different specs upon an order of, say, 100-150 pieces? I (empirically) doubt it as he is too involved with his project but I'd love seeing this happen anytime soon!

Droptopman rules! Your mention about JoeyB got me on the right track: http://www.rwgforum.net/topic/132246-using-a-2836-as-a-base-for-a-small-hand-gmt-project/?hl=joeyb#entry971552

Unfortunately this is a GMT hand and not a minute hand but from a conceptual point of view there's no difference as far as I can see upon my very limited knowledge of such things. I'm off sawing my TC hands! :D

Glad to be of service. I wish I had seen alligoats Clark hand shot before opting for the TC hands. They look great in that pic. Too late now already lumed and being assembled this week...I think.

... and this apparently closes the discussion as LHOOQ weighs in to say that even gen Tudor hands are almost indistinguishable from TC's hands...

There apparently is no other way than going gen to get a correctly sized minute hand; which implies broaching it to the cannon on ETA based reps. Unless one decides to get a gen 1570 that is...

Maybe I'm slow here on the logic... We're having this thread as to evaluate other option than the common choice TC. Gen Tudor "sub" hands are similar to those (but more expensive). Both these do not have longer minute hand as far as I know.

By going gen, do you mean buying gen 1016 hands? In my opinion, one of the hardest spare parts to source today (although I think one member here has like 4 sets). So don't think that is an option - even if money is spent on a 1570 movement.

Nail hit on the head Ogladio.

Gen 1016 and Tudor hands are not a viable option for the reasons you state. TC, Yuki and Clark all make good products which do not accomodate the need for a longer minute hand on the 1016; my querying the forum's search engine did not return anything encouraging therefore, I fear that any other solution will forcedly have to involve the kind of rework which was performed by Chiman on his GMT hand...

Something I for one will never be able to accomplish.

It will be interesting to see Phongs new ETA handsets when they come up for sale .

Thanks Dlf, Phong offers a "Tudor submariner hands set" compatible with ETA movements. Is that what you are referring to or can you confirm that a new (and hopefully closer to gen) set is due out anytime soon?

The actual one comes at USD 95/set + shipping, and does not look like an improvement over TC's judging from the pictures on Phong's site. Has anybody had any experience with these?

I spoke to his son and he says there will be new version of handsets available for 5512/3 at same cost ($95) he only has a few in hand ATM

Pretty steep for some ETA hands .... Only if they are Exceedingly close to gen could I see any of us buying them.

The 13mm minute hands I used are available for ETA from Helenarou.

Thank you so much Joey!

Currently this item is only available in gold colour at Helena's. I have shot her an email in order to enquire about the availability of the hands in silver.

HR 13mm hands are out of stock, the minute hand isNOT 13mm even though the picture Is the same they are completely different hands. Or am I wrong? What hands are they exactly the 5513 hands?

The hands in my pics are both 13mm for certain, were in silver from Helenarou several months ago. They had the gold for a while, and said they had just received the silver when I ordered. I took the silver down to bare brass using 1500 grit sandpaper, wanting all brass hands on the Submariner.

Nice to hear, Lo´

Keep us posted please, with detailed pictures!

I have never used HR so I'm curious to see what they are up to and, of course, I'll keep the forum posted with what I hope will be excellent news.

And since I'm quoting you: LHOOQ tells me that you've got a lot of intel on the variations between vintage and "modern" Explorers. As such I'll take the liberty of posting something in private to you tomorrow. I'd appreciate your feedback on a couple of questions I have.
