Awesome looking project, I can't wait to see it together. I agree there's something strange about the first insert, it appears to be a very thinly printed mkiii.

Excellent choices with the dial and hands, this is going to be a stunner.

Cool project. Did you already get your Ruby case? I’d be interested to see the crown positioning.  I got Ruby’s PCG a few months back and was frustrated to see the crown position as low. I can still salvage it with some filing, but was expecting better at that price point.

She will probably help you out if you tell her there's a problem with the case you received.

In short... that black one is an alternative mk 3. Lets call it pointy 4 or mk3.5.

lol thanks, definitely needed a translation there.

They all look nice. I wish these weren't so expensive because the rep ones suck by comparison. Hopefully @slay will release a nice MKIII next :king:

Remember there is no mk1 mk2 mk3 etc. mk1 is a fat mk3 (most often) or mk3.

So there's basically the early big and small crown inserts, maybe 4 or 5 different types (red triangle, no hashmark, etc.)

Next would be the Long 5 (I love these but they seem awfully rare)

Then the MKIII fat or slim

Then the MKIIII one like you posted above with the more compressed numbers.

And there's also a later "service insert" where the numbers are really thin..

Is that a pretty accurate rundown of all aluminum sub inserts?

Basically yeah...

Red triangle inserts usually configured as mkIII (varying fatness, unsure if also tall 5)
-not pictured-

Mk2 - Tall 5 (can have varying degrees of fatness)

Mk3 - ”The standard” also present as Tudor Blue (available as very fat)

Mk3.5 - The one above, mix between mk3 and mk4 (not fat)

Mk4 - Flat 4 (not fat)

Thanks, I wish I had gotten this rundown a lot earlier, this post oughta be stickied for everybody.

The Long 5 insert really makes your 5513 stand out. Oh and I guess the dark lord dial doesnt hurt either :prop: It is one of the nicest watches on here IMO.

While we’re on the topic of 5513’s, does anyone know the thickness of the mid-case, sans the caseback and bezel ‘lip’ ? Did the case thickness stay constant throughout the model from the 60’s to the early 80’s?

"Yep, that is correct, 5512 PCG's are slightly thinner. No idea on the exact height."

"I  don't know the exact thickness. But I've had this discussion with Rolojack and he informed me that early 60s especially 5512 PCGs have thinner midcases."

Is the 703 more correct on a 1985-1987 5513 maybe? Because the 16800(0) started appearing then.. An it had the 703 stock right?

Anyone knows when the 703 was introduced (if ever) on 5513?

EDIT:

About 1982.. so new crown and tube coming.

"Anyone knows when the 703 was introduced (if ever) on 5513?"

If you look at pictures of 1982 to 1987 5513 they all have 3 dot type crowns on printed and applied marker models.  Some might be 702 (both are 'triplock') but the main difference is the smooth area at the lower edge of the crown for the extra O ring on the outside of the case tube.

'Triplock' = two O rings inside the case tube and one under the crown cap.  When there is one at the base of the crown, it is not counted.

Factoids:

No mater how many O rings the rolex crown/tube combo has, the same amount of pressure is applied to the one little bitty gasket between the case tube and case.  That's why a high quality single O ring non screw down crown can go 50 meters or more and a double O ring crown can go 200 to 300 meters with no problem.

One O ring crowns are good most of the time.

Two O ring crowns can dive so deep your head will cave in.

Three O ring clowns crowns can make it to the bottom of a 1000 meter deep vat of Night Train wine.    Imho.  :animal_rooster:
