Hmmm, you are right. The booz must have messed up my memory :1a: . But I still think it was a too obvious way of product placement.

I don't know, I put it down to Bond's habit of specifying precicely what he has/wants, like ordering the specific champagne in the Bahamas... Same with the order for The Vesper, when he specified 'Gordons' rather than 'gin'. Although I agree it could've come across as product placement, I think it was really more a case of that is just the way Bond talks about things...

Its a shame the rest of the movie didn't live up to the first 20 minutes.

:o

To be honest, I'd say Casino Royale is one of the few movies that I find doesn't drag. The only bit that was a bit slow, was Bond's convelescence and begining of the vacation. That was a bit slow, but, it set the emotional tones needed for the end to work... As movies go, I thoroughly enjoyed it :)

The recipe for the cocktail is EXACTLY as quoted from the Ian Fleming book - even down to the reference to a product name that isn't used any more, so if you think Gordons and Kina Lilet were product placement then Mr Fleming was 50 years ahead of his time :)

And talking of being ahead of one's time...

I think you've misunderstood the point I was making. While I acknowledge that Bond saying 'Omega' can appear to be product placement, the point I was making is that Bond is a connoisseur of things. He knows precicely which brands are the best, knows precicely what he wants, and gives specific instructions to people so he gets precicely what he wants. From the Wikipedia:

Bond is a creature of sensual appetites, a consummate gourmand, womanizer, and drinker and is a heavy cigarette smoker.

Bond seems to have very Epicurean tastes in meals, often giving meticulous instructions on the preparation of his food and drink as well as the ambiance of the room.

A lot of the comments he makes in the movie are simply examples of this 'meticulous nature', but, in our media-conscious era, it can be viewed (or misinterpereted) as product placement :)

Ah yes, whatever happened to the GMT? :D

Didn't I explain that one at the time?! The SMP used on set for the distance shots was a GMT because it was the only Co-Axial movement SMP out at the time of filming. The decision to revert to the standard SMP for the promotional work was made late summer last year when the movie posters started to appear. They even re-shot the publicity picture of Daniel Craig holding the Walther!!

I just saw the movie this weekend. Not the best Bond I have seen (and I have seen all of them). A shame he wrecked the Aston Martin within 5 seconds of driving it. How did the girl know what was wrong with the defibrillator? How did she even know it was a defribillator? IMO, the last hand of poker could have been played out a little more dramatically.

My final thought on this movie was that I feel it should have been set in the 1950's when it was written since it is a prequal to the other Bond movies. This movie was also lacking a super villain. Nobody to really hate in the movie. I kind of felt sorry for the guy that lost all his clients money and the poker game. There weren't even any great gadgets in this one. Maybe technology has cought up with Bond and his toys don't impress me anymore. He could have fired at least one missle from the Aston Martin.

Funnily, that was what I enjoyed about the film. It was more like the original novels (which I prefer over the movies) so I thought it was great :D
