dangerman Posted September 14, 2007 Report Share Posted September 14, 2007 Just give me a minute to explain what I mean. I took a watch to my regular watchmaker. It's a small family business. His father started it and still helps out. So this guy was brought up since a kid with watches. In my conversations I have been struck by the fact that while he knows about fixing watches; he actually isn't really into them in the way that guys on the watch forums are. I suspect he doesn't have much in the way of fancy watches himself. It got me thinking. When you work around a large quantity of nice watches do they lose their mystique and allure? I suppose a prestige brand AD might be like this, but most would have a relatively small range. Most probably also sell a fairly small numbers of watches. To me then the best group to examine would be the replica dealers. Our replica dealers live day in and day out with a huge quantity of watches. They handle watches that are replicas of the best designs the gen makers can conceive. They live every day with a staggering diversity and variety. In short they experience a quantity, quality of design, and a variety in their watches that your "average Joe" simply could not conceive of. Yet still I have questions. I wonder if they are jaded? Is it all just a blur of hundreds of meaningless pieces of metal? Are you just a professional, doing a competent job? Would you still be interested in and get excited by watches? Some how I got to thinking that this is a lot like the life of a porn star. Superficially it might seem an attractive line of work. You are experiencing an enormous number of sexual acts. These vast number of acts are of an extraordinary variety and perversity. Finally this tremendous variety of innumerable acts are performed with partners of a physical perfection beyond the reach of most mere mortals. (Hugh Hefner and Julio Iglesias aside). But the reality is not all that attractive. The porn stars are just professionals doing their job. They work in a highly clinical and impersonal way. It's probably boring and they do it largely for the money. Often they are much less physically perfect away from the cameras. The job even carries an element of risk of social ostracism and danger from sexually transmitted diseases. Let me say here that I'd love to hear from some dealers here. Especially the smaller ones. I have always got the impression that for instance, TWP is a true watch lover. But he may be atypical, as I also understand that this is not his main line of work. Come on everyone. What do you think? Are our replica dealers the new porn stars? Oh and any former or current porn stars, please give us your thoughts as well. But handling it all day at work it just doesn't have the same allure as if you don't, but if you are not working with it all the time it has meaning. I am finding similar with watches these days like you mentioned, they don't have the 'wow' factor they used to just because I have got so used to them. Anyone who sells volume can be jaded to the significance of each individual item - car salesmen, hotdog vendors... That said, they may still have a great passion for the items in general - cars or hot dogs. Narikaa might, and he seems to follow your general thesis - owning only a classic flying tourbillon and gold Breitling, both excellent reps. I can tell you that anyone who lives in a place like China, even if they are a rep collector or not, are more than likely not going to be impressed by any "high end" watch unless it is something of true uniqueness and value. I mean really, the watches we buy here can be purchased for much less on any street-corner in Guangzhou, Shuanzhou, Kung Pow , or wherevertheheck... at least I assume... Funny thing is that I know exactly the same scheme in the other side of the globe compared to Austarlia, in EU. Instead of the Porn stars that you refer to, I would refer to wine tasters and chefs. Most of them are still in love with their area of expertise, but indifferent to low quality products. This is where I would place our dealers. Now, if you talk about the wholesalers/brokers, then yes, for most of them a beautiful Panerai is no different than a cheap music box. Given that many of our dealers drop ship I'm not so sure they swim in watches all of the time, but I venture to say that most are watch enthusiastslike us and that likely led them into the game. You're right, I'd be the latter in both cases I used to DJ before, that stemmed from me (as with watches) hoarding so much music, I was asked to do it, and started using that as my excuse for buying everything. I would listen to music 24 hours a day, it stayed on even when I went to sleep and I had a walkman for elsewhere. Eventually it just became a job and the music got switched off for about a year!
