mpp
So yesterday, I headed over to my well known A.D. in Dallas to buy my Dad a birthday present...he is a Rolex man and has been since the 70's I decided on a nice SS Sub and I went to check them out and make the buy. Well before I joined this amazing site I didnt know a Hublot from a Crossbow and I had no idea that the other amazing brands existed. I have read and studied all the great tutorials and pinned how to's on here and I have amassed a nice mix of quality modded and a few crappy :)reps. So there i was conversing with the salesguy and knowing what the heck I was talking about and he was impressed that I knew what I did and how excited I was to try these gens on and see the difference between them and the reps. I picked out the Sub and they were boxing it so I went on to try on more watches. Well I was in there being selfish and trying on these amazing Concord C1's, Big Bangs,Big Pilots (the White Gold model almost left on my wrist..what a beast) and APROO's when I realized something was different in the room full of customers and reps. They were inching up close to me and whispering and pointing to my wrist and thats when it dawned on me that my dumb ass wore a rep to the AD.(completely forgot I had it on)...and not just any rep but my most fav rep my DSN 203a that is nicely modded. Well I had the oh boy moment and I felt like a goober and thought I should have worn one of my gens... So I am about to tell them what it was when the reps and the customers ask to see it and it gets passed around...minutes of oohs and ahhs and "I have never seen this one"...and this guy in the line makes me an offer for it.UNREAL Now this PAM is my daily beater, I just love the PVD and it looks older cause it is dinged up and has the tan SC strap but for the life of me I couldnt understand how the staff couldnt pick it out Wow...it took 10 mins longer to leave cause they all wanted to talkabout the watch,( they talked and I listened so as I was leaving with the Sub in the bag I told my salesguy that this is a rep and its my fav but I didnt want to make a scene in the store cause I am sure a hanging would ensue. This very proper stiff salesguy looks at me and says Holy S%$T sir you are joking. We talked about it for a few more and he was still stunned and better yet he asked if I would sell it to him I am still grinning, but I wanted to humbly say thank you to the group for the education and the insight into my new favorite hobby. This site has been a source of knowledge and fun for me and from the bottom of my heart thanks for having it here and thanks to all of you for your passion and for your knowledge. I have a new appreciation for all of you and your skills and insight. I went platinum a short while back thanks to Lani's post on stepping up and supporting and it was the best money spent. Cheers and have a great weekend, mp
mbjoer
Love this story. Had a similar experience today. Took my noob submariner to be pressure tested. Just to be sure that I can swim with it. The guy in the (admittedly non AD but still a professional watchmaker) took one look at it and refused to do it.....because it would be unnessecary! I then insisted and suggested that it might not be real following which he decided that I might not be real. - At least his face looked that way. Test was then performed up to 100M. No prob. And all that for a watch which cost me $70.

mpp
HaHa, I sure did Bro. I have to go back in there, and after the fuss they made about how great the watch was, I couldnt be dishonest Plus I just dropped some nice coin on a gen so that helped. FxrAndy
Bad form! You would have been better to just say thanks and walk out, if they dont know about good rep there is no need to tell them, and bring attention to them.

medphreak
Sorry, no congrats here. You broke two rules. Don't take reps to the AD. Don't tell the AD about reps. Shame. MedP

Samurai
While it's good to know that a modded PAM could fool most people @ the AD......as some of the other members mentioned.....there really wasn't a need to tell the AD that it was a rep. Do understand that...if reps are this good .....people will prefer buying them over gens....and it directly affects the AD's earnings. The reason probably someone wanted to buy it off you was to show to the manufacturers the quality of reps availble. No harm done here.....but let's be more prudent about this going forward. sammalone
From the movie Goodfellas: "...never rat on your friends, and always keep your mouth shut." great scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyGz3j4p5Fc Do we have a list of these unspoken rules so that they can be sent out in the intro e-mail when someone becomes a member...in case they didn't know, reps and ADs do not mix very well. Glad to know the AD was fooled....but lets keep it on the dl Enjoy the new sub! I'm sure your Dad will definitely love it.

I know that I appreciate it and you can sure bet that MPP does as well. good job Mike Something I thought about but didn't think to voice. There are many forums that I've searched looking for answers to dumb questions and have found comments by arrogant know-it-alls that berate the poor person who posted something that was innocent enough, yet those in-the-know felt the need to express their "superiority" by hurling verbal sticks and stones. So many of us get excited about what we've learned that we must share, and in doing so occasionally reveal things that need to be identified and corrected. As we make mistakes, having someone who is more experienced point those things out in a manner that is helpful and respectful goes a long way to getting us where we need to be. Just like riding a bike, it takes a while to learn how to do it safely. Thanks guys. BTW, that could have easily been me that told this story- except the part where I was buying a gen watch, and was trying on a bunch of gen watches, and would be caught wearing a PAM...
