DLC Coating - Start to finish!

Those of you who are PVD aficionados probably caught LegendofSpeed’s recent post, showing his newly DLC coated genuine Panerai 000. Having had the honor of working on this fine piece, I thought that I would take a few picture, to document what is done to a watch when it comes in for DLC coating.

This post shows, from start to finish, the process that I follow.

First, a picture of the watch, as it came from LOS:

The watch is carefully disassembled. First the crown guard is removed:

Then the movement is decased:

And stored away, for safekeeping:

The bezel is removed (usually easier to do with genuine watches…reps may need some special coercion):

Crystal is pressed out:

The crown guard is broken down:

Once the watch is reduced to its basic components, the parts are prepared for bead blasting. All of the gaskets are removed. Then all of the mating surfaces (including the crown tube, gasket seats, and any threaded areas) are taped off, so that the case will retain it’s integrity when blasted.

After the blasting process, the parts look like this:

Then, it’s off to the coating center, where each piece is carefully secured in custom fixtures, and the toughest hard surface coating available, Diamond Like Carbon, is applied. After the beauty coat:

Once the parts are all carefully reassembled, it’s time to take a few glamour shots:

I also had the chance to coat a rep deployant for LOS. Behold its chocolatey goodness!

And there you have it!

It was wonderful seeing these amazing step by step photos. I too have a zero that was recently coated by avitt. The DLC application looks spectacular in person and avitt was a pleasure to work with. If you don't already have a DLC'd piece I would strongly recommend it.
