  1. When building a Rolex people sometimes ask why they need a date wheel overlay since the movement has a date wheel. If there ever was a more compelling reason to build nifty Tudor projects I can't think of one!! The common movements used in reps have a date wheel proportioned for what can be thought of as an old 4:3 TV set while the window in a Rolex dial is similar to the newer 16:9 HD sets! You have to stick an overlay over the native date wheel or you'll wind up with something like this: To compound the Rollie builder's life even further the vintage builds will usually require a font with "Flat threes" and "open sixes and nines". Seems most of the more easily obtainable overlays come with "round threes" and "closed sixes and nines". Here is my solution to this issue... Most overlays come printed onto what looks like a brass or stainless steel disc with the SS ones being the more common (at least as I've seen it). These things can be dunked in lacquer thinner or acetone, stripped, brushed, painted, BBQed, etc., and re-covered according to your needs. Brother Ubi was nice enough to loan me a gen vintage style date wheel which I used to create a clear decal. Is it perfect? No, but unless under extreme magnification it looks pretty good and will certainly pass the "wrist test". I started with an overlay that was on a SS substrate: I then brushed it in a radial direction with a Scotch Brite and applied this: To get this: Which I epoxied over the sanded 2846 date wheel like so: Installed the dial and had this: Which fully assembled looks like this: This finished pic shows the font under considerable magnification so it does look a bit "soft" but this is not really evident "on the wrist". If anybody needs to make themselves some vintage overlays drop me a PM as I printed plenty of extras and even have a few overlay "blanks".

  2. Ok, about a week ago i listed my Iphone 4 (which was finally bought by an RWG member yesterday) on the bay at a buy it now price of 1030usd A buyer with 0 feedback bid and won it at this price... while i was waiting for the payment to be sent through ebay, this guy sends me an email asking me my PP address and if i was willing to send the phone to his friend in Nigeria since it was meant to be a birthday present. Naturally i responded that he should first complete payment through the EBAY route, i also sent him a second invoice i case he had failed to receive the one the EBAY had sent him. I received a second email at my gmail account asking me again to send him my PP address, i told him that he should follow ebay rules and pay me through there. He said he did not want to go through ebay and asked me my PP address for the third time... after that i received a notification from a paypalverified@easy.com address that a payment has been made to my gmail address which of course is not my PP address!!! Here is the email Note that although the amount he had to send was 1090 (1030+60 shipping), he allegedly send 1105 usd!!! Take a look at our emails exchange, you might find it interesting!!! _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On Fri, Mar 25, 2011 at 9:38 PM, John Mar <jmarin.72@gmail.com> wrote: First you fail to comply to the EBAY rules and try to fool me with a fake PAYPAL verification note that a sum of 1105usd (although the price that you had to pay was only 1090!!!)has been sent to jmarin.72@gmail.com...although i have already told you that this is not my PP account... Second you have the nerve to call me a scammer and threaten me with a US military report.... C'mon now... accept the fact that the scam that you have tried to pull did not work and move on to the next victim my friend... Have nice day!!! Oh and BTW, even if what you said was true, that you have sent funds to PP account jmarin.72@gmail.com... First... there is no such PP account Second... read below the notification this account has received from "PAYPAL", notice that mentions that the funds will not be credited to this account (which of course does not exist!!!) until the owner sends tracking number... hence... not tracking number... no funds transfer....so you did not lose anything... assuming that you have send funds to this account.... which of course this is not true....as we both very well know... Now, i cannot believe that you are so idiot to think that i would fall for any of your stupid tricks and claims... So move on and try to find a new victim for your tricks. 5. DarthAlex recently posted on RWI a Sub-C build thread about swapping into a better case (as well as doing a dial marker swap, relume and all sorts of other crazy awesomeness). I got so excited by the thread that I (literally) bought a couple of Sub-C's from Timesshops that night. They got in a few days ago, and I wanted to try and get this out of the way so that I can concentrate on a build for another member once I get his parts in. I don't know if the cases I got are the same as the ones that DarthAlex got, and I didn't do exactly the same build. But I'm really, really happy with the results. OK, so to begin: I got two of these in the mail from China. Green ceramic bezel with black dial, 21j, pretty cheap. I don't care about that stuff since I'm after the case anyway. I've already popped the spring bar on the top in these pics. SEL fit is good for a rep but nothing exceptional. Decent crown position, other than that fairly unexceptional. You can see that the caseback doesn't quite fit flush, which is wrong for this model (more on that later). The one thing these cases to have is FANTASTIC rehaut engraving. I mean the best I have ever seen. I'm going to call this the TS case, as opposed to the Noob case. Font is correct, alignment is correct, size is correct. If it were a little deeper it'd be gen. So I pop the caseback to find a standard 21j movement: Nice to find a metal spacer ring, I was expecting plastic. Now put all that aside. The "donor" watch is this one, my black BK Sub-C w/ skinny hour hand (lumed by RSH, installed by me) BK's Sub-C is built on the Noob Sub-C as a base watch, with typical BK extras. I start stripping the watch down, and discover something awesome. Note that neither watch had exceptionally good SEL fit--they were both good but neither was great. However, the Noobmariner bracelet is just a hair wider than the TS bracelet, so it is a TIGHT fit into the TS lugs. Now the SEL fit is excellent. Here's the Noob bracelet on the TS case: At this point I strip both cases down completely to see what else is going on. Noob bezels are notorious for being impossible to remove, but the TS bezel has enough room that I think you can get at the paper clip retaining wire and remove the bezel itself without bending it (TS is the one with bracelet attached in all pics). Someone with a more sensitive eye than me is going to have to comment on the CG shape, I don't know which one is more correct, but the TS looks fatter to me. Lugs are also a hair chunkier, although it's hard to say for certain. OK, at this point some students came to my office (I'm a college professor) so I had to take a break, and I somehow managed to screw up a bunch of pics in the middle (too out of focus to see anything). So we jump to the finished product here. In fact, the only pictures that came out were of my blue Sub-C (I ordered two cases so I could do both blue and black). The ceramic bezel inserts swapped without any problem at all, they were EXACTLY the same size. Here's the finished product: SEL fit was the same way with this bracelet, so with any luck that means the Noob->TS swap will always give good SEL fit Here's something interesting. Remember how I mentioned before that the caseback doesn't sit flush in the back on the TS case? Well, it turns out that the Noob Sub-C caseback fits the TS case, and it DOES sit flush: And the rehaut engraving: Another interesting fact--the noob crystal will interchange with the TS crystal. So I have the TS crystals on their way to Chieftang, and I'll try to do an AR'ed cyclops mod. That and pearls are the only thing these watches are missing, as far as I can see. Maybe I can convince DarthAlex to sell me some of his custom ones.
