Tutorial - how to spot a fake rolex by "pawn stars"
fotoman replied to fotoman's topic in General Discussion
This is why I always say, it's not the quality of the piece as much as it's the attitude of the owner. Some people ask, well, I don't want to be embarrassed. While i generally freely talk about mine as a rep. When I'm with people i don't know, I won't say its gen or not. But no one ever asks me, because I'm nonchalant. Most people I know who can afford 20,30,50k watches will blow it off or say it's a fake when it's really gen. -
This has generally been The Zigmeister's view. That with most of our reps if properly oiled and cleaned there is no reason why they wouldn't work for many years. It's the ones with hair and the tears of small children that get whacky. And a co. Like millionsmart makes good movements and thousands and thousands of them. And their tourbillon is pretty cool. No way it's crap.

It's sure not our grandfathers Internet, anymore On a serious note, how would one quantify the quality of a forum to an advertiser. Unique visits or users active/ period of time?

This community has, probably the best, most correct and most diverse repository of info. I have never seen an issue where someone can't jump in. It's much easier to know what a watch is about when your looking at the rep and finding flaws. The only continued ongoing issue is - where is JETMID -

To be fair, he was giving a tutorial to avoid buying one from some guy in the street. Did you see that gold rolex? At the new episode, my dvr cut it off. What happened -
Tip: don't try to apply business or social norms from the west. You will just end up banging your head against the wall

Hmm. Well that would be 7 yrs of forum general wisdom turned on it's head. I'm glad someone finally told me. From what I can gather from a little research, 1. It is odd that Wikipedia does not mention wrap, cause wiki pedia is usually overly inclusive. 2. If it is the same, it would seem to be a very expensive application (making it less likely to be in a rep). Since, according to Wikipedia, it is regulated to use the term "gold filled" my guess is wrap looks like it's being used to avoid using the word plated (not high brow enough) and not wanting to meet the regulated definition of filled. I have seen many jewelers who use the term "dipped in gold" when they mean "gold solution" which is just plating. Offshore, is it your understanding that it is a rare and or expensive application? -
Don't worry, I got drama covered for this week. Anybody else curse like a drunken sailor? How about....the excess.....use....of elipsis....

If you haven't seen the show pawn stars. Rick is pretty knowledgeable on lots topics. It's a great show, people coming in with random crap, if it's valuable, he brings in an expert then they haggle. They are in vegas so they get lots of interesting things. Mondays show, he bought a guitar owned by les paul's wife which was used in stage on album jackets. And lots of documents, correspondence, signed by les. He paid 90,000$ for it. He is actually very fair, at least on tv. Ricks a good dude, his father drives a harder bargain and his kid is still sorting things out. It's a very popular show in the US. I knew you guys would get a kick out of it. -
Take a look at Dewitt. I know it's not simple, and the board resale value sucks, but they are sharp, and they retail for like 30k. It's nuts

If your going to change parts around. I found with many of the rolex's of that time period the bracelet only sat flush with the one that came with it. Check the lug hole and if they are the same on both sides and calculate that into your ideas -

Ahh, my young padowans. For whatever it says about my life, I have checked perfect clones everyday since 2006. I have a very good mental catalogue of what's out. I like to know, people ask me, hey what's a good dress watch for instance and maybe one day I'll get my zenith grail. It's much more difficult now, but in the now cliche "old days" there just wasn't that much hitting. There were only 2 variations in the roo. Just 2 rubber clads. And there was no "h" or "n" factory, sometimes updates from watches would come. But there was no arms race to pop out pams. Not like now. This guy had a hard bezel with rubber strap. With correct sub-dial spacing. It was just not available. funny enough this the model my father has It's one of those things. Rolexers stare at the pearl and cgs. Omegaers have problems with happy feet. I really like AP. I have friends with a few models and I have tried on gens in jewelry stores all over the world When you become a quasi expert in a small handful of brands, you know what's up. If I saw a Pam in 2006, first thing I would look for is the pin. If flush, 90% chance it's real (assuming other things) but the pin was the easiest give away. Then those thin f-in crowns, hated them. Also like some of the 7750 AP you just know what a 7750 looks like, you can spot it in a dozen diff brands from across an entire store. -
This was just so funny i had to share

That is fantastic. I Want to get better move onto bigger pieces, like my grandfather made. So far it's just pens and a display

Ok one quick point. There is no such thing as gold wrap, gold is plated by dipping the metal into a liquid solution which is ionized and the metal attracts the gold from the solution. I'm not an expert on rolex, but, I want to echo the post about. There was quite a mini war over solid gold mid links, and it has been proven to be brass. Dealers, I believe, were fooled by the makers and genuinely thought it was gold. We did have a limited run one time of full solid gold rolexes. I think it was like 1500? -

Ok, so I give my cousin a Pam gmt like back in 06. He is in the music buis. I'm not bullshitting, he is chilling with Alice Cooper and a few people backstage. Alice is a Pam Collector. So someone else asked my cous If it is real. He took it off, handed it to Alice - he looked it -qup and down and said, oh yeah, it's real . Keeping in mind my cous is not a roady, he has a production company. And this was with the old school rep strap. But heavily worn in. Alice had no reason to kiss his ass. Another story. I met a dude at Disney while we were waiting for our kids to take pics. I said nice watch and I showed him mine. We were both wearing AP i had the new rubber clad in a black dial. He had the same watch without the rubberized bezel. He said he really wanted the black one. But there was a three month waiting list - in whatever country he was going back to. Now, I know exactly what was available because they were super new and only a handfull of models had the subdial look. He says - you wanna trade? I had to maintain complete control not laughing. I mean we were hold the watches right next to each other and we took the others to look it over. Of course I didn't trade. But i also didn't have the heart to send him to a rep site either. Quick 15-20k in my pocket. Which by now I could use i would have wasted it away before then anyway? Def my best rep story to date -

You could put a nice strap and aftermarket AR on a lump of [censored] from 7-11 and it Would dazel 99.9% of people and even watch lovers. Finding a watch for the right occasion for me is a multi step process and the various order of importance is also circumstantial so, l'll give you my list and if you want to use it, decide which factors are best. 1. Price rep + strap + mod 2. Availability - 1:1 vs pretty good vs nice watch but fantasy. (remember only supreme supreme watch obsessions could tell something is wrong with it, especially with strap and AR. Don't fall into the trap of thinking the other 7 billion people on the planet have any idea of what a patek Phillip is, could be a disease or something, let alone what is not available.) - however when you get down to the 100$ pieces many have such inferior quality that there seems something off about it, and many I can't even enjoy. 3. Message - just like your shoes, your tie, your hair, all send messages so can your watch. So, what message are you trying to send? I would never wear a patek to a job interview or in many situations where, just in case someone has heard of the brand you don't want to throw off, I'm rich. This is especially true with rolex. Sometimes you don't want clients think they are paying you so much you can live the phat life off them. Or sometimes you want to give off that extra power thing in order to gain leverage. Sometimes I leave the expensive rep at home and wear a rolex (which I have on fire sale) because no one knows what xyz brand is, but that 5k rolex sends the message. 4. Do YOU actually enjoy the piece 5. Does the piece satisfy more than 1 category 6. Is there a gen you have always coveted that can fit. 7. Will it fit under the dress shirt cuff (more important than you think) There are many omegas that are nice- come on SS no strap needed. A couple of longines I have the one with the day year in 12 subdial. It's smaller than my usual pieces but fantastic out of the box and looks great with a suit. Real tour billon look great. The parmigiana (sp) are great There are a bajillion frank mullers - I haven't seen the vanch Constantines are good. Not sure if they are still around but there are gold radiomars That are nice
