  1. @KKS, I have/had one of the Bulova testers, and they will give you an understanding that a watch leaks ( or doesn't) I have however seen someone post a simple test @ NAWCC, which is so easy, and achieves exactly what a Bulova test does. 1 Place your watch in the sun and get it hot. 2 Immerse the watch in cool water in a glass. 3 Look for a stream of bubbles, if you see same, immediately remove the watch from the water. 4 You have identified a leak... fix it. This does not give you a "pressure" at which tested, just identifies a leak, as does the Bulova tester. Simple physics, you have increased the internal pressure of the watch by putting it in the sun, immersing it in cold water, whilst reducing the pressure, creates a initially a differential of pressure internal vs external, ( until the cold water reduces and balances the internal pressure) The differential ... SHOULD... create a stream of bubbles if the watch has a leak point. And as soon as that is seen, get the watch outa there, before the pressure balances, and water has an opportunity to start moving into the watch. There you go, simple , easy, no guarantees, and certainly no ability to say " tested to X mtrs" or " X ft" But a better test than no test, and you would have to be confident if it didn't leak, that you could shower, or surface swim with it. Or as Eddie puts it " Good for a 100m dash in the rain" Offshore
  2. @gm, There are many theories on condensation... Henry Fried in "Principles of Waterproofing watches" says that he beleives condensation to be a sign of a very minute leak. So it may be a nicked or distorted O ring or seal, or something as silly as grit under a crystal seal. I don't think thread tape is finally going to fix this!! Suggest you get a pressure test, identify the leak, and replace the offending seal. Offshore
  3. Slay, There are 2 answers to this. If you want the total pressure ( Absolute-if I remember my diving terms) its 14.7 psi +1.47 psi=16.17psi. However the gauge pressure ( deleting the already existing atmospheric... 14.7) is 1.47psi. Its a simple equation, for each 33 feet ( or 10m) you descend, you add 1 atmosphere ( 14.7psi) to the existing surface pressure- ( 14.7)... so 1mtr = 1/10 of 1 atm or 1.47psi. So from the other angle, at 1 mtr, you have 1.47 psi ( gauge) plus 1 atmosphere ( surface) (14.7)=16.17. Hope thats clear... I haven't taught diving theory in over 20 years... but I can assure you the numbers don't change I,m sure Bill will tell us if I,ve got my terminology wrong. Offshore
  4. James, It surely wouldn't hurt to have left the link soaking in something like WD40, prior to trying to undo the screw. Two points. Make sure you have the bracelet secured in some form of clamp or vise, and select the correct size screwdriver for the screw head. If that fails, the bracelet screw remover I initially pointed you at, is the next alternative. Offshore
  5. James I think what you are seeing, is a pin style bar. If you look closely the "screw head" end, may well actually be a split pin, so no amount of screwing will do anything. Has the bracelet got arrows on the back, indicating a direction to push the pins? I remember in my early days, I fell for the same trap, trying to unscrew split links. If it is a split pin style, the one I pointed you to is not correct, but he has the other style as well. Offshore.
  6. James The one you need is available from Birdman http://www.rwg.cc/members/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=28733 Always remember that the right top quality tool will do the job, whereas using an incorrect tool, will only cost more $$ Offshore
  7. Richard, Would just like to point out that this, like all decisions made from Admin, was a collective one. ( This is why it sometimes appears we are a little slow to act, we all have input, and there are time zones to consider) In fact on this one, it was yours truly who took it to the table, TT offered his input, as did the majority of our team, and we all agreed on a resolution which Thomas posted. Your team is always happy to be of service. Note - there is no"I" in "team". Offshore
  8. Not really..... what you do know is that the one gioarmani has passed a test. This doesn't mean that the next one will! Remember that as each one is individually assembled, a seal may be incorrectly assembled ( or left out) or the parts used in the assembly are from a different source. I would still have each individual unit tested before immersion! ( And retested frequently) Offshore
  9. Sure, all posts, ( That we collectively see, and feel worthy) are thrown in to the pot... For later voting. That is why we encourage anyone who sees a post they feel warrants inspection, to contact one of the admin team. Gotta tell ya, that we each don't read every post.. but hope to think that collectively we touch on most. As a little side story out of admin, I PM'd one of my fellow crew today about a post, ( which he had contributed to), and he PM'd back.... asking to be pointed to it So in a short space of time, he had read so much more , that he had "lost" that particular post. No names, etc etc, but we all do read a lot Personally, I am busy at work in a new job, and get little chance to do much during the day, so have taken to getting up at 2.30am and "putting in" an hour.( And quite enjoy my "quiet time") And as I'm in Oz, and out of synch with the forums' busy times, this at least keeps me fresh with forum happenings. 10. Cartier. ( TRC 3 1/2 years ago) TTK Only ever worn once, still have it.
  11. I also note that in pic 4, the pusher @ 2 ( or has serations around it, presumably to grip to turn the tachy scale, yet in all the other photos, the pushers are all smooth. More than one photo here! Also the numerals on the 1st photo are almost white as against dark in the following shots. ( maybe just the photos) In Cooksey Shugart, there are a couple of similar models pictured, ( but not the same) from the mid '40's, interestingly, some of these are marked with the warning, " Beware of fakes" Methinks its time for a report to ebay. Offshore
  12. @fitmic The test is done by pressurising the chamber, whilst the watch is above the water. Therefore the watch has been subjected to the pressure ( if it leaks, pressurised air is inside) It is then placed in the water and the pressure is decreased. If the watch has a leak, air will bleed out thru the leak area. if you see bubbles, it leaks, and you immediately pull it from the water, before the pressure equalises, and water can get inside. Hope that explains it in laymans terms. offshore
  13. I'm not a Rolex afficianado, but have been sitting pondering this one. There are too many things wrong. If I am not mistaken, that is a relatively late model bracelet... sure it could have been fitted later... but.... Also, this style dates from the '40s to the '60s.. why then would you have a Gas Escape valve?? especially when helium was only used as a diving medium from the early '60s? Why would Rolex even build a chrono, moonphase, multidate, tachymeter...."Oyster"... and install a gas valve?.... thats commercial dive stuff! Maybe its time to start some Rx research... just to cure my inquisitive nature. Or maybe someone here can tell me some more. Offshore
  14. Gee, this almost qualifies for a POM. Thanks Hank, we really appreciate your help. Offshore
  15. Spotted these on 'bay Oz tonite. The PP just proves that big watches aren't just a 2000 thing. BTW this seller has some great stuff, but if his history holds, this will have a 4 figure reserve on it... trouble is, I don't know what the 1st figure is!! http://cgi.ebay.com.au/PATEK-PHILIPPE-Vint...1QQcmdZViewItem The 2nd just raises eyebrows, It could be something from the 6062 range, but I don't think so. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/GREAT-ROLEX-CHRONOG...1QQcmdZViewItem Seller has good feedback, but I don't think this ever saw the Swiss border. What say- you Rolex nuts? Offshore
  16. You are releasing the pressure once you submerge them....???? Thats when you will see the bubbles Offshore
  17. Good stuff people.. I'm amazed ebay got off their collective bums to remove anything from a private report! I've given up reporting them, now just tell the buyer its a rep, and leave it at that! Offshore
  18. Lovely watch, and I am so happy to see it comes standard with the obligatory TRL Must say its VERRRRY tempting, and I haven't bought a rep in years! Offshore
  19. Hi Brick, See its the day you get another year older.. have a good one mate. Offshore
  20. Doc, You are certainly talking about the Rugby League guys there.... and I agree... even tho I live in a Rugby state! However, you seriously underestimate the fitness, athleticism, and skills of the Aussie Rules guys. And as for egg chasing.. ever tried to kick an AFL ball?... its not a lightweight balloon like the soccer or rugby balls... it takes real strength and ability to kick it ( as in FOOT ball).. let alone mark ( catch... over your head!!)....whilst 1m in the air! I,m just stirring a little pro Oz stuff... we are putting together a few home growns to challenge the round ball boys as well Maybe the next World Cup? Wouldn't that be a hoot, we could have a reserves team of Aussie Rules guys to take on the runners up Offshore Think I saw more than a bit of this recently in Europe as well
  21. Maybe this is why we have better access, through a better server,.... which costs more???? Offshore
  22. Hey doc, Am I winning?? Tis a bit hard to know from down here in the colonies! Don't hear too much about the round ball game! I do know however that the AFL Grand Final, will be played this weekend, with only 100,000 spectators, and a viewing audience of millions! And what a spectacle... football... they can kick it... they can mark it... they can run non stop for 100 minutes, on a ground almost 3 times as big as a "pitch". So if anyone wants to see real footy, just tune in to the AFL Grand Final, and see some seriously skilled athletes. ( And the Rugby League gorillas go head to head ojn Sunday night.... more like gridiron... only tougher ) Offshore
  23. There are 3 watch parts cleaners going off on Ebay here in Oz, in the next 7 days. They are currently all at A$100, but historically have attracted few bids. There are 2 x Elmas, and a Vibrasonic. Have contacted the seller, they are all working, have jars... don't forget they are 240V for Australia ( but I think one of those travel adaptor plugs would fix this!) If anyone is interested in one, shoot me a PM... the seller has indicated he would make them a " Buy It Now" to sell all 3 together.. he just hasn't said what his price is ... but I figure maybe A$150 each may pull them up. If anyone else is interested in one, I will buy the 3. get them to my home, and then pack and ship at the lowest possible cost. With exchange rates ( A$100 =U$75 today), I can't see that they would cost anymore than U$200 at your door, and cheaper if they were seafreighted ( 6 weeks) I did a quick check last night, and the Elmas are around GBP 775 + VAT new, so these would be good value ( I think the Vibrasonic is similar $$) Let me know in the next day or so guys. Offshore
  24. Thanks Guys.... thats why I hang around here, to soak up this wisdom, like a sponge Offshore
  25. Fair Dinkum..... I only posted it for the info! Offshore
