We had a Wiki a few years back and it died through lack of input and attention. From memory the person who was to look after it never even posted in it. Great idea, but requires maintenance. O/S

One Impressive Diver... the ETERNA Kon-Tiki 1000M
offshore replied to projectologist's topic in Other Brands Area
Isn't it a pity that a lovely watch like this ( RRP $9500) is so heavily discounted- http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Eterna-KonTiki-Diver-Automatic-Power-Reserve-1000-Meter-/130582430756?_trksid=e17002.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8124485547631456268 There are a few sellers with them at around $7.5 k, which is sorta reasonable...meaning a used one would hover around $4k maybe a touch more. So throw a new one into the mix at this sort of money, and see then what your used watch is worth. Pity the poor bastard who paid retail! O/S -
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Lest We Forget.

Is the price of Gold destroying historic watches
offshore replied to RWG Technical's topic in General Discussion
I was in a jewellers the other day, and the local scrap gold guy was also there. He showed me maybe 6 watches, mainly Omegas, but also 1 Geneve. The Omegas were pretty scrappy old Seamasters in general, and had a case value of around $1500 each. I honestly couldn't see any of them selling for that as watches. I could have bought any or all, and passed on the lot. I then asked him about the Geneve, which was an ugly ostentatious thing, and it also had a solid gold bracelet. At $4500 scrap value, it was surely destined for the melting pot. Offshore -

Ken, Like Freddy, I too am somewhat ambivalent to the situation! What I am not ambivalent about, is the apparent urgency to close a thread for no good reason. My original question was if Sql_Pl was still a member of the forum, there were no accusations from me. You and the rest of the team are very aware as to why I chose to resign, and it was for these very reasons...failure to reach a consensus...and then zero action resulting. It has been an all too common theme. And I saw it repeating once more...so you have my reaction. Rightly or wrongly I cannot in good faith sit back and watch threads closed/locked down because no one wants to make a decision, OR not enough team members are even inputting to the discussion to reach a consensus. These things don't just go away...they still are there to be dealt with, locked threads or not. Absolutely agree...and I will stay out of it completely JUST keep the thread open for discussion! Freddy, That is just so wrong! This issue has EVERYTHING to do with RWG. it has to do with the ethics and morals of the place, and what the forum stands for. The person in question is a long standing member of this forum. His actions have been viewed by other forums and acted on. The admin and moderators of this forum give every indication of trying to sweep the matter under the carpet without reaching a resolution, EVEN when the actions in question are in direct conflict with the rules of the forum. Right now it appears is that no decision will be reached and the thread will be locked down. Unfortunately this has happened previously with other contentious threads, with the same NON result. We have had a situation where a member of this forum was actively launching Ddos attacks against dealers, we had proof, and yet the forum chose not to ruffle feathers and did nothing! Didn't even remove the member from the forum. And there have been other instances before that one. At some stage some decisions need to be made about what is and isn't acceptable behaviour by members of this forum. No use having a list of rules if they are ignored. In my eyes the team have to reach a decision..... whatever it may be....... act on it....... and bear the consequences of those actions...not sweep it under the carpet and hope it will go away. In other words, be accountable. Offshore.

I started this topic, and do not believe an answer has been forthcoming, and do not believe this topic should be closed. It would seem that the admin again fail to reach a consensus, and neatly stuff an issue under the rug. Unfortunately this is not the first time this has transpired; I resigned from moderating on this forum, for the very same reason. Its about time someone stood up and became accountable, and made a decision...ANY decision...not yet again just avoid an issue. An issue exists, associated with this forum, and requires answers from the forum administrators and moderators...not to just lock the topic down and hope it will go away. Offshore

I still see no explanation for the fact that the same email address is associated with all these scams? I am one of the first to realise that there are many sides to a story, however I am at a loss as to an explanation as to how the same email address is being used and is directly linked. And I see NO answers or rebuttals of this. Beats me?? Must be IT magic. Offshore.

This topic at RG seems pretty conclusive, http://www.repgeek.com/showthread.php?t=170757 and he is being systematically banned around the gen and rep forums for scamming. Can we know what the current position is with his membership on this forum? Thanks, Offshore.

where to buy a die cast aftermarket gold case?
offshore replied to horologist's topic in The Rolex Area
No they were't allowing photos. By eye, it was equal, so 1/3 gold, 1/3 s/s, 1/3 gold. Maybe a touch more s/s but that would be pretty close. It was a serious amount of gold, def not plated or wrapped. O/S I didn't specifically see a Rx case, but they had many brands and I assumed Rx would be top of the pile...maybe not. -

where to buy a die cast aftermarket gold case?
offshore replied to horologist's topic in The Rolex Area
Last year at the Shenzhen show, I saw a company from HK, who are doing a "solid" case, which has in fact a s/s core, but is to all intents solid gold. This is not a "wrapped" thing, I saw one cut in 1/2, and there is some serious depth of gold...not a coating. The process is "secret"! But they were quite reasonable...from memory around U$1500 then, although gold has leaped since then. I will dig out the old brochures tomorrow if there is interest and let you have a contact..they are still operating as I saw an advert recently in a trade mag. They do a wide range of different cases. Offshore -

I have recently heard of another redialing process. First the existing dial is photographed. This is done with a camera in a jig, so it is perfectly square, and the correct distance to take a 1:1 photo. Then any "attached" markers/logo are removed. The dial is either just repainted over whatever colour is wanted, or cleaned off and repainted. The photo taken is photo shopped to remove unwanted marks, touch up any print, or in this case, remove the unwanted print. The photo shopped dial is then reprinted on to a clear adhesive film, (matte/glossy??) which is cut to size, and attached to the original dial. The markers/logos are re attached. I guess in this case there is still the question of lume, and I don't have an answer for that. i guess the tricky bits are setting the camera to get a 1:1 image, and finding the correct adhesive film for the new dial print. And of course having the photoshop skills to redo the dial perfectly. It certainly removes the "artisan" quality levels required with hand redialling, and I'm told it is relatively simple and cheap. In a country with a low labour cost, I was recently quoted U$15.00 per dial with a minimum quantity of 10. Have seen , and received examples of the work, and it is VERY acceptable, IMO. Offshore.

If you consider paying around $200 more for a strap with "Cartier" printed on the back reasonable, go for it. You can buy a top quality strap well under $200, in fact I can get you a croc with a "Cartier" stamp AND a "Cartier" buckle, custom made for under $200! $400 + for a strap is taking "Franken" to the next level methinks. Offshore

Have you any idea what they are going to quote you? Best you sit down before taking that call! In fact don't bother trying to drum up a serial number...the numbers in the cost of the strap, will be longer than the serial no.! I tried to buy a coil for a movement, and they wanted $700.00. Finally tracked the coil model, and bought one at $3.80! Some mark up! Thieves., offshore
