Rolex have finally broken the tasteless barrier
offshore replied to chronology1066's topic in The Rolex Area
Stoppit...stoppit... Ahgg my eyes...... AND not you too BT, getting involved in this desecration. Actually thought you had more taste. I couldn't even store those images in my 'puter...lest it went out on strike! Let alone I inadvertently opened the wrong file... is there anything available, like a porn filter, for these abominations? O/S -
Rolex have finally broken the tasteless barrier
offshore replied to chronology1066's topic in The Rolex Area
@chronology1066. Actually, my eyes had (somewhat) recovered from the Gaytona, and I tended to agree with you. However seeing it (Gaytona) again, actually confirms, that other Rolex- reps or gens, of this calibre, will never hold a candle to it! Sorry, but that one, runs a 2nd to the Gaytona, ( not by much) but someone, somewhere, maybe able to justify its existence...just through the lack of a total colour bombardment. It just doesn't ASSAULT the eyes like the Gaytona. In all other departments, however, it must rank right up there! Rolex, and even the rep community, should be ashamed of this attack on anyones intelligence. (Even ghetto pimps should cringe if confronted by this attack on the senses.) Brings real meaning to-"Who's got the best sub!" Offshore -
@trailboss, Glad to hear she's still running strong mate. No major technical expertise on my part- new battery, clean the contacts, and a 10sec burst on the demag, was all that was needed...total repair time about 5 minutes! (As you know! ) It may have been any one of the stepping motors with the problem, but I really suspect cleaning the contacts was the main assist. Interestingly, sometimes these, after a new battery install, can take up to 3 or 4 minutes, to actually "come back to life". Can't for the life of me figure out why, but have seen this, especially with older Seikos, quite regularly. Offshore

I have a PDF with parts breakdown, and diagnostics, if that helps. Also this is a good site for info, and the author still has a ready supply of parts. http://members.iinet.com.au/~fotoplot/acc.htm He is in Oz! Offshore If you want the PDF, PM me your email so I can send it.

Condensation in watch after "passed" pressure test?
offshore replied to jleef's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
Hmmmm. if there are signs of greasing the O ring, it sounds like the watch had been opened and lubed prior/during the test? (Which one would hope had happened) Now I would not have thought you would suffer high humidity in the UK at this time of year?? (Where I am right now is 32C and 100% humidity- perfect for this scenario!) Which would make my hypothesis, less than feasable! Nevertheless, the watch will obviously need to be retested. I have seen that "streaking" condensation before, and it is relatively minor. But any moisture in there, is not acceptable. Sounds like a lamp and plastic baggy with silica gel etc is needed. Maybe even see if it can be closed up next time in a room with a dehumidifier. On another note... if Timpsons are a franchised chain, which it sounds like... you may have just lucked out with a rep friendly branch/employee, or one who just didn't know, so necessarily all branches/stores won't do a test. Condensation in watch after "passed" pressure test?
offshore replied to jleef's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
If the misting was only slight, it is possible that the watch had been initially sealed, on a very humid day, and immersing it in cold water, has created the misting. Living in high humidity climates, creates a problem in resealing a watch, even opening the crown can allow enough humid air in. I know of watch repairers, who work in these climates, who operate air driers, (dehumidifiers) in their work rooms to overcome this problem. I have looked into this myself, having experienced this issue, just can't justify the +$300-$500 cost for a decent unit. Offshore -
Well it's a real auction, of a rep/homage watch from HK! Who knows what may finally arrive! Offshore

The members are aware, that deep within the workings of this place, we have a board room...the inner sanctum, where all crucial matters pertaining to the forum, and the world in general, are discussed. Till now, it has been a rule, that what happens in admin, stays in admin. Knowing the consequences of revealing any of our private discussions, this has always been off limits. However, a recent interchange of views, has had such world changing ramifications....I couldn't let this little discussion from a recent board meeting, go unreported. As may be seen from this interchange, it is only matters of extreme importance to our forum, or to the world at large, that are discussed, within these hallowed walls. My apologies to my fellow team members, for the release of these highly sensitive and controversial discussions, however I just didn't think it right that our members not be made privvy to these amazing revelations. With the US car industry bailout $$ recently thrown around.....one can only hope it was a freebie! Maybe not...wouldn't be a good first step in office... to be taking backhanders (Maybe a good 2nd however ) Offshore -
@diz, Couldn't agree more, however we need to understand, that there are copies, especially quartz, that are being wholesaled at well under U$1. I was offered some quartz (not copies) recently for U$0.10c! Seriously.... FFS I pay more than that for a battery, and these were complete (absolute crap....... nevertheless running quartz watches) So whatever brand finally appears on the dial, we know that they can be put together VERY cheaply. And there are mechanicals, which can be purchased (in quantity) @ U$5 or better. I don't care what people say about the "going" price for a mech movement, they must be offered in quantity to the volume factories, at very low $ amounts. (Probably accounts for the lack of QC everyone is on about ) These things must be sold in there 1000000's on the tourist strips in Asia, cos I have had hundreds shown to me by punters looking for a repair... which is obviously not going to happen! And these same punters, regularly, when told the watch is DOA, just say, 'Oh well you keep it for parts" and walk away. So they don't place much value in the "timepiece" either. Could go on about this ad nauseum....however I have much evidence, which says a lot of mech copy watches are wholesale @ sub U$5, and quartz are close to U$1. (And if someone wants them, I have about 200 absolute crap quartz which run- but fall apart, which I would sell at my cost.... A$ 1.00- thats like 0.65c US... however the freight would always kill the deal!) Offshore

Yes, there are plenty of rep Seikos out there. I see them frequently. That one is probably legit however. Not because anyone can identify a rep from such a photo, but because the seller has +82000 deals, and is still around! The best and quickest tell, is like everything else, a movement shot. The fake Seikos run Chinese (and other) movements. So if you are seriously concerned about that one, ask the seller for a movement shot, of the watch you want to buy. Probably won't help much, except to put your mind at ease, but worth asking. I would have thought that model could be bought over the counter after "negotiation" for under $200 anyway, so maybe pay the extra, for the peace of mind, a warranty etc. You will find that a Seiko from O/S will possibly not be warranted in your country, and parts become a prob.. sometimes. It may not even be a model released in your country! I frequently have parts probs here in Oz, and Seiko's 1st response is usually, "That wasn't an Australian release model" At times, "cheap" can actually be "dear" Offshore

OK, Sit down and look at the movement from the back. If the stem is at 3, just above and to the left, you will see a lever. Now pull the stem to the 1st position (date set) The lever will move, and you will see, on the end, a small recessed dimple. Now press firmly on that dimple, and the stem will release. Hope that works. Offshore
