  1. Dont feel embarrassed...feel empowered to do something! BTW...Happy Birthday...it's my birthday too!
  2. I agree it's just the way of the world that a few passionate, practical and blessed to have the means benefactors do the most to keep the lights on. My experience being a trustee of my church is very much the same...lots of talk about what needs to be done...fundraising...silence from a majority...giving from the usual suspects...rescue from a significant benefactor. I agree that contribution to the board is way more than financial. There are members here who contribute services that are way beyond the time I can devote to the community. We all do what we can. It's easier for me to write a check than it is for some but I can't possibly invest the time and effort it takes to add to the incredible reviews and photography donated by some of the members here. Those contributions are the life's blood of the information we provide...it's the reason this board has value. At this time...paying bills is the most pressing issue so the bean counters and contributers have to take center stage in this but in no way should we look down on those who might be hesitant to dig into their pockets now because they have maxed out their hours contributing their precious and valuable time. To the guys and gals who come here to take info and notes, stroke their egos by pontificating and posturing and then dissappear...I think some soul searching at this time would be a good thing to do.
  3. I treat my watches like fine jewelry. Not a scratch to be had. My dad's GP is full of house paint. Go figure!
  4. 12,000 members paying $1.00 a year would almost cover it! It's kinda silly when you think about it. 4% of the total membership covers the operating expenses here? Thats scary.
  5. Add me to the 300. To the mods...where are we in terms of getting this month paid? If it's a matter of frozen funds that will be released eventually, I'd be happy to cover the costs until that's resolved. You can PM me to work out the details. Chris
  6. I've got a Gen Quartz TH Aquaracer and compared to some of my reps in terms of weight, there is no comparison...but my QAR is a much more solid watch in terms of performance, WR, quality of materials, attention to detail, lume etc...etc...etc...No comparison
  7. I never buy a new rep design until at least one generation of issues has been sorted out. I think the only watches in recent memory that were lights out off the assembly line were the SOSF and the Omega SMP Chrono. I won't soon forget the IWC Portug. Chrono group buy when some 200 brand new "running seconds at six" time bombs were bought by enthusiastic collectors who were stepping over one another to be first in line. When some of us dared to shout "isn't an unproven running seconds at six design a risk" we were met with resounding cries to shut up. I believe the failure rate on those watches was damn near 80%. Im certain the Oris chronos will have most of the material, design and function issues resolved in another 6 months. Then, I might get one!
  8. I agree...reps without screw down pushers will percolate and I doubt any of them, pushers screwed or not, will pass modest WR pressure. I would recommend testing these watches sans movements.
  9. Water resistance treating a cheap rep is a TOTAL waste of money and time. I own about $4000 in genuine diving watches. Know what I wear in the surf? An 11 year old Seiko diver. Why?...I wore my $2000 Omega SMP Chrono into the waves one afternoon and after riding one in, I noticed the bezel had poped off. $400 later my "trailer queen" went back on my wrist for dry land duty only. The moral is you can tell anyone who gives you grief as to why you are not wearing your macho diving watch into the drink that wearing something rock solid, inexpersive and reliable is what smart people do.
  10. I liked the idea of testing some low priced gens in the same manner and offered SD4K my Seiko, Citizen and TagHeuer Genuines as a comparison but his better judgement prevailed as he didn't want to be responsible for my watches being ruined in the test or lost in shipment. Actually, I have no doubt that even my 11 year old Seiko Diver would pass with flying colors. Reps are just too unreliable when it comes to WR. Yes, there are many owners out there who wil attest to great performance but WR is a watch to watch crap shoot and not something that can be relied on accross the board in either a brand or a design.
  11. Thank you soo much. Amazing time and effort. If your test tells us anything it's that WR in reps is marginal at best. I am so miffed at the SOSF...the dealers are selling these as 1000M resistant watches. What a crock.
  12. Hey Zigs. Lots of entitlement abounds. I appreciate the great work you have done for me. Unfortunately, your services here ceased to be a privilege for some and became a commodity to be demanded. I'll always appreciate the fantastic work you did on my "wrongway B" Navitimer...I'm not sure how you did it to this day. I hope you can continue to give back not just your skill, but your integrity to your craft in a way that is satisfying. CK
  13. No matter how much I try to explain it...no one gets it especially those nitwits who think a watch is for telling time! I can't count the number of times my bud holds up the time display on his cell phone saying "Isn't this all you need idiot?" Never mind the guy has 2 Corvettes in his garage. Watches are jewelry to me and when it comes to my jewelry, I'm just like a woman. Never enough.
  14. The advantage of the MBW watches ts that some of them (Rlx 1680 and 1665) will take genuine parts. Go to the Rolex forum here and wonder at the world of Rolex modders who create pieces that dwell in the grey between fake and quasi real!!
  15. I'm amazed at the number of prolific posters here who frequent other boards and contribute. Where do you guys get the time?! Anyone here frequent "legitimate watch" sites as well???
  16. You can Google and download ETA oil charts on the web.
  17. Yeah...I thought it was sandblasted to mimic titanium. Previous reviews have noted only the weight was a material giveaway.
  18. Can you properly oil a jeweled pivot without disassembly? I didn't think you could. Cheap 21Js are better replaced than serviced. I'm not a watch repair person, but from what I've read from Rob, a dip and swirl is akin to lubing the chasis and changing the motor, transmission and differential oils by spraying the ouyside of the car with WD40. The proof is in the performance. I wonder if anyone has had a poorly performing movement returned to reliable running by this method.
  19. Strange eclectic mix Front to back row...left to right Gen TH Aquaracer, Rep SOSF, Rep TT Nav, MBW 1665 GW, Gen SMP Chrono. Gen Hamilton Dodson, Rep RG FA Jones, Gen D. Freemont Pureal, Gen Maurice Lacroix Sphere, Seiko Alarm Chrono Citizen Promaster Diver, Seiko Automatic Diver, Casio G-Shock, Raymond Weil Don Giovanni, Bulova Marine Star, Seiko Automatic
  20. Where are you looking? I think Silix and PC have it only on a rubber strap which is incorrect. If you have a bracelet source, maybe there's hope for this rep. I have avoided buying it because the non bracelet edition is fantasy
  21. They are an excellent replication of the Swiss icon but usually are manufactured with less than optimal oiling and cleanliness. I have owned 5 or 6 that have been problem free. If you do encounter problems out of the box, most dealers will work with you to replace it. If you have problems down the line, there is a resident watchmaster lurking not so secretly here who does fantastic servicing and has declared the properly serviced Asian 7750 almost every bit of a reliable performer as its Swiss cousin. Hang around...read lots and use the search function. There are movement reviews available (if you sign up as a supporter $$$$$!!!!!). There's something of an initiation rite here and some old time members don't take kindly to handing out the keys to the replica kingdom to transient members who show up to buy a few premium rep watches and then leave with their bootle. Welcome aboard!!!
  22. The Gemini series of chronos is beautiful andyou can get one for $650 on Amazon
  23. Hamilton, Tissot, Accutron offer decent entry level, ETA automatics in some nice styles for under 1K. If you are interested in Divers, check out Ocean7 watches...rock solid pieces, 1000M WR for around $700 http://www.ocean7watchco.com/watches/produ...;products_id=18
