  1. Thanks 2005SUB.. though you never say "good luck" to a fisherman.. ..you wish him poor fisheries! It's kinda like "break a leg". Deltatahoe, that catch was around 2000 tons, or around 4,490,000 pounds if you will.. It was worth $1 million. But it was shared with 3 boats. ..you normally don't bring that much herring in a single load because of quality. Our current skipper actually holds the unofficial norwegian record for largest catch in one haul, estimated at 10,000tons. But this was before I joined the boat.
  2. Thank you TT, and same goes, happy father's day to you! (do you actually get ties and shirts today? ..or is this a myth?) We're one of those countries who wait btw.
  3. Hehe 2005SUB, ..My balls are ok sized.. nothing special.. lol You don't really consider it danger, until you get smacked by a wave like the one in the first picture.. That's when you might start thinking a job ashore won't be that bad after all. But then you come ashore, get a days rest, and you want to go back out and make that money. We actually don't have many sharks here.. I guess it's the cold water. We hear about the occasional basking shark, and something called porbeagle in english (I think).. But these are deep water fish. We catch some dogfish sometimes. That's it. There's a lot of whales and dolphins though, we see them everywhere, and they follow the fish migration like we do. When it's all quiet, and you go below the waterline inside the boat, you can hear them singing through the hull. Quite fascinating We catch them by accident now and then, but they mostly break through our nets with little difficulty, or we let them out before they do.
  4. Just thought I'd share some pictures of what's going on when we're out there. Like any other job we have the good days and the not so good days.. Only difference is we have to rely on our workplace not to sink.. It's been a real shitty spring this year, with plenty of storms, hurricane force winds, snow until May and far between the bright days. Summer has come, and we've had a few nice trips so far.. It's all looking better. Here's one of the bad days: This is where you pray you didn't leave a hatch or porthole open anywhere. One of the good days: And the best days of them all:
  5. Those are props from Starship Troopers 2, Nanuq! And we have clegs in norway too! Size of an F-16, with mean red eyes. ..at least you hear them before you see them. Anyway: I know what you're saying about repellents, I use effective stuff when I am on hikes or when I go freshwater fishing.. Works great for those.. But I want to enjoy my evening out on the deck without having to lube up with anything, and I don't want mosquitos around at all! There's no doubt the CO2+octenol+vacuum concept works, I read an article about a norwegian project: They have a huge outdoor theatre site where they placed a number of traps, 5 I think, around the parameter. This desimated the mosquito population in the nearby area, and people can enjoy the plays without having to clap when there's nothing to clap for. I have also heard horror stories where they placed the trap so their house was standing between the breeding/hatching ground and the trap, thus resulting in becoming a snack stop for the suckers on their way to the trap. @raijor Great theory about the fans.. But.. Wind.. is one thing we don't need more of on the western shores of Norway. @cornerstone Peterhead.. city of smiles and bright buildings.. Prisoners are punished twice over.
  6. Some of you city folk might not be bothered by them, but mosquitos and other flying, biting insects are the devil in the summer for some of us rural people.. They can ruin a beautiful calm summer evening and night. We've seen a few traps appear in gardens around norway, and they actually seem to be working very well. I've been 'researching' it online for the past days, and it seems there's one brand that stands out; The Mosquito Magnet. They outscore most anything else in tests. Not very pretty.. This is a cordless model, the Liberty Plus. I see them for sale in Scotland, and since I am in port there every few days this month (peterhead), I'm thinking about picking one up to try it out at home. On the island where I grew up, vegetation has been left unchecked the last 30 years, so it's overgrown and is starting to get a real problem with the flying suckers, so I might try it out there. Anybody have any experience with mosquito traps? Other brands and patents I should look into? -Ape-
  7. Looks to me like Bob Frei and a certain 'Klink' might be related..
  8. You are in luck.. they make them in the US too Jay Leno bought one! The us version is made with up to 300hp engines. US Ariel Atom For what it's worth.. you'd be my hero for buying one. If I had the money to spare, and your kind of weather, I would already be driving around in one daily.
  9. If you are considering one of the above mentioned, I suggest you buy 2 or 3 Ariel Atoms instead.. That way you can take friends racing, and you'll smoke 99% of anything you encounter on your normal roads. If you haven't seen it, here a classic clip from UKs Top Gear, absolutely worth watching. Ariel Atom tested on Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson: "I AM AN ALIEN!" Don't it look fun?! There's a US version of it, built in the states. Search youtube for more clips of it.
  10. This is a map where someone has renamed American states after what country they compare to in terms of similar GDP. It does not take into account the size of population. But it's a fun map none the less. This map really shows you how huge the USA is in world economy (and I'm not talking about debt) Here is the map and details of countries and states included: US States renamed after countries with similar GDPs Minnesota ended up with my beloved Norway, and given our relation it's very fitting. ..btw we all know that on a per capita basis, we would outshine you all. ..I think.. (OK, we're 2nd in GDP pr capita, with Luxembourg on top) Ja, vi elsker dette landet!
  11. ebay works perfectly for me, ajoesmith.
  12. It's not a V3, slay.. it's a V3x.. difference of 0,6 MP. Image properties for splash.jpg: Dimensions: 1200 x 1600 Size: 249 KB Camera Model: RAZRV3x Date Picture Taken: 3/7/2007 @ 3:54 PM. A testpic taken with the V3x ( I realise this is not a splashing boat , but it's not that bad still):
  13. You can take some very decent pics with a cellphone, Dutchy. I have a few babypics framed at home, taken with a SE K750i. A personal favourite is this one, taken with a SE W810i 2MP camera. Only thing done with it is making it smaller and applying heavy photo filter in PS CS2.
  14. I dunno about that.. I can't see where it would be fixed.. It's a RAZR V3x, 2Mp camera.
  15. Too late Pugwash! I imagine him in the shed now, in tongue-out concentration, hacking away on that poor buckle..
  16. Yeah, I have to agree.. at $270 I'd rather buy a nice Seiko automatic or two.. It's a nice enough looking watch.. but it looks a bit too much like a typical "no-name watch" that's been slapped with a designer name. But if you think it will make you a little happier.. go for it.
  17. Yeah Pugwash, I was amazed that these were taken with a phone! ....some burn-outs and all, but I have seen worse pics from pro equipment in "heat-of-the-moment" shots. You can't buy timing and luck.
  18. Yup.. I see what you mean.. I am looking for a genuine Breitling, and I can't see myself buying a $300 rep of one.
  19. Ok then.. They look ok, and if they didn't get eaten by sharks.. THEN let's laugh
  20. The boat was a stock boat being delivered for the Dubai boat show in March, no owner had to see this happen to his baby.. Check out the guys in the back, hanging on for dear life. They look ok after, so lets laugh. The Victim: Forum Discussion
  21. "Oh then, maybe it's not green. Anyway this is what I sleep in sometimes."
  22. Ultimate Mt Everest, perfect Kilimanjaro, best Matterhorn! ..I actually had a teacher with a doctorate in granite.. He looked like he did too.
  23. It made me want to go start my own forum! hmmm.. what do I know a lot about?
  24. You're welcome.. Don't touch "smite"!! I tried it for you.. Member->Hangaround->VIP->Fullfledged Knight of the realm->Admin->GOD I've not got that kind of money. BTW: I'm holding the 'admin'-title hostage until I get a free powermax!!
