I was scammed on a Gen, Beaware, and help/information needed
freddy333 replied to Capital10's topic in General Discussion
Contact Paypal by phone, immediately, & explain the situation. They will probably ask for the pics & copies of any correspondence as well. Most likely, although it may take some time to sort things out, you will get a full refund & the seller will get a very unexpected knock on his door. Oh, & never buy anything of value from a newbie member of any website unless someone you know well can personally vouch for him (I see he joined TZ last month). Always a big mistake. -

Mounting a 1560 movement to a mbw case
freddy333 replied to lionsandtigers's topic in The Rolex Area
I found a set on ebay once & they can often be found in the Sale sections of VRF & TZ. Also, Ofrei sells sets of Bergeon case screws that will work. I cannot tell you which set you need, so you may have to get a couple to find the right screws. -

Mounting a 1560 movement to a mbw case
freddy333 replied to lionsandtigers's topic in The Rolex Area
I have no experience fitting a 1560, but here is a 1575 in my 1665 MBW case The dimensions of 15xx movements are all the same (28.5mm x 5.75mm), so it should fit the same way. As I recall, the only modification I had to do to fit the movement into the MBW case was to reshape the calendar ring, which your movement lacks, so that should not be an issue. However, as is always the case with vintage Rolex & rep cases (including MBW), anything is possible. -
Looks like a rep to me, so someone (the buyer) may end up with a $5k lump in his xmas stocking (& heart) this year.

Welcome back, Ubi. The Patek is looking swell. Not sure about tomorrow (Friday), but wearing 1 of my Subs Thursday evening

No idea? I have never built a 1655 nor used Yuki's adapter, so you may need to direct your question to Yuki.

Yes, exactly.

Left hand, schmeft hand. Who needs hands?

Adding to Andy's comments - I would give the seller 2 weeks to respond. After that, I would post a brief explanation of the problem in the General forum, including the item you purchased, a brief explanation of the problem, what you have done to contact the seller (including the number of times you have contacted them & in what time period (if you sent me 3 angry emails in 2 days, I would probably not respond immediately)) & any response you have received to date from the seller. Remember, too, that many Asian sellers do not speak English & may use translation software to communicate. So simple/cordial communications are likely to result in the most positive end.

Your movement needs an overhaul. All mechanical engines (the movement in your watch is a spring-driven engine) require regular servicing. But, unlike a car engine, watch engines require complete overhauling on a regular basis to remove old, dry oils and to apply new oils. Rolex, like most watch companies, recommend that your movement be overhauled - completely disassembled, cleaned, oiled & adjusted - every 5-7 years.
-
Since your watch is not gen-powered anyway, why not just call it an Explorer-style 5510 & call it a day
-
Much better. I forgot to mention in my 1st post that, while you may like the look, superdomes were not used on Subs until long after the 6200 went out of production. The 6200 should have a Tropic 17 crystal My 6536/1 has a T16, which may give you a better idea of the height/profile of these early Sub crystals

Rolex has been involved in auto racing for decades, so this is nothing new. Remember, the Daytona was named after a famous raceway in Florida.

Ditto. Considering the appearance of the case, I think having a hole in the insert (where the pearl presumably used to be) would look more authentic than sporting anything less than a naturally-aged, gen part.
-
The case looks great, so the metalized pearl (which is wrong for this watch) should be removed or replaced. Are you going to do anything to enhance the patination of the dial & hands?

What loupe to get when using eyeglasses?
freddy333 replied to slask111's topic in General Discussion
I have a couple single lens loupes, which are probably easier for most. But I find it easier to flip 1 of the lenses out of the way when it is not needed as opposed to having to switch between loupes. 1 or a combination of these 2 lenses is sufficient 90% of the time. For serious close-up work (oiling pallet stones, escape wheels, indexing mechanisms in Accutron, etc), a microscope is easier anyway. -

Assuming you have more than 48 hours left before the paypal deadline, send him 1 last email, explaining the situation (cordially & in simple English - remember, alot of Asian sellers rely on translation software, which often outputs less than inteligible prose) & giving him 48 hours to respond. Then, since it is mid-week & there are no Asian holidays to keep him from responding that I am aware of, if he fails to reply with something reasonable, you can then say you gave him every benefit of doubt. By the way, recently, I have discovered that paypal treats rep watches just like any other purchased item, in that they will act on the buyer's behalf to refund your full purchase price in the case of a rep watch seller that either fails to deliver (as in your case above) or ships a watch that differs from the watch pictured/described on their website. Now, I would not assume that they will always help every buyer in every situation, but, in my case, I am batting 1000. In the past 6 months, I have had to inituate 5 disputes with (non-RWG) rep sellers over fraud or bait-&-switch tactics &, in each case, I have gotten all of my money back & paypal was well aware of what I had purchased. The trick is to do your due diligence before hitting the buy button. That is, email the seller & ask him to verify that the pictures & description on his website are of the exact watch you will receive &, if there are any details that are especially important to you (for my project, case size was all that mattered), indicate those specifically. Then, copy all of the seller's pics to a folder on your computer along with a copy of the webpage itself. Rogue sellers have a habit of changing or removing webpages when they get asked to verify details. This way, if there is a problem with the sale, you can make a pretty substantial case against any defense a rouge seller might come up with during a paypal dispute. Good luck.

Should you be afraid to wind it (slowly, 40 turns)? No. But the movements (engines) in nearly all rep watches are used &/or unserviced, so, if it is a watch that you plan to keep for a long time, I would have it professionally overhauled (disassembled, cleaned, oiled) as soon as possible. Then, like all mechanical movements, it should be overhauled every 5-7 years.
