DW made his name here some years ago by being the 1st to make accurate vintage 62xx Daytona cases & franken watches available for sale. There are many threads dedicated to DW, his wares & those here who have detailed their experiences constructing Daytonas based on DW case kits. While accurate, DWs are not without their warts & problems. They provide a skilled watchmaker with the materials to construct a very credible vintage 62xx Daytona, but they have also caused many no end of frustration & grief. For this reason, I would strongly recommend that you spend time reading about DW (use the Search at the top of the page) before getting too excited.
All - Thanks for the kind words. It will probably be another week or 2 before I receive all of the replacement movement parts (fortunately, all of the worn components were parts that are still relatively easy to source), but I will post pics of the completed watch as soon as I can.
With the final key to my Phase II 6542 puzzle finally in-hand, here is a test-fitting of all the pieces with the exception of the 1036GMT (while I had it apart, I decided to replace a few components with NOS parts that, while functional, showed some wear)
When complete, this watch will be all gen except for the dial (MY, but this may change) & bezel insert (Andy), which I thought was gen when I 1st saw it on another watch.
Considering what I have had to pay pay for some of my cases (gen & aftermarket), a couple hundred to buy a case that comes with an entire working watch is a real bargain. I often buy reps just to get a particular case (or hand, dial, caseback, etc).
The last time I built 1 (a year ago), ladies case prices were cheap (relatively little demand for ladies Rolex parts). Maybe they have become collectible?
Very effective ad.
Hard to tell, but the car looks like it might be either a McLaren or Porsche?
In any case, while the watch is nice, I would expect something a bit higher end to match the car.
Very impressive work, but I think I would have just bought a surplus/used gen case on the bay ($50-$100 for a ladies case), which would accept the gen dial/crystal. All you would need is to make a spacer to fit whatever (non-Rolex) movement you decide to use.
Brilliant work (as usual), Ubi.
Like you, I also have an AK case left over from an old project that has been on my mind lately. I think I may just have to follow your lead here.
