That poor, poor watch! The humanity! Won't someone SAVE it?!!
-
You guys are far too gentle with your watches! When I got my Doxa it was coated with this nasty crown crud like the previous owner had worked in sanitation and never cleaned his watch. It was naaaaaaaaaaasty. So I used an abrasive toothpaste and a stiff brush and went over the thing thoroughly, 3 times. I removed the bracelet and cleaned in between the lugs... more of the same. I went over the bracelet thoroughly... more of the same. In the end it came out sparkly clean and I am guaranteed no cavities for a year!

Okay lads, there's a Doxa Sharkhunter for sale right now that's vintage, meaning it has the domed plexi like my Sub. The thing is, this beauty has a Hamilton movement, not Doxa. Or perhaps a Hamilton rotor on a Doxa movement? Like that matters... a Doxa movement is just a decorated ETA right? So here's the item number: 190265092383 It will need the bezel refinished to get the matte inner ring, and some paint on the bezel numbers. And the crown is wrong so it won't screw down and be waterproof. And someone please brush that case to remove the polished finish? But at a current price of $124 you can't go wrong. Throw an ETA movement in that bad boy, source a gen crown, and you've got a franken to end all frankens. Except Delta and Freddy's COMEX of course.

There are always escrow services. You send the watch, buyer sends the cash. When all are satisfied, the escrow releases the money to you and the buyer has the watch. Be careful, there are also some bogus escrow services out there.

Spectacular COMEX, friend! I can't seem to pry this bad boy off my wrist...
-
"Hurts to take it off" !! Perfect! You are sooooo right, this thing is GLUED to my wrist! And you're right, where DO I go from here? I went right to the top, and the rest of them are going to seem "almost as good" in comparison. Perhaps I should have started off slower? Naaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I love the size. It's not as thick as even a 300T, it's comparable to a 1665 Seadweller. And it is waaaaay comfortable on the wrist. This is the 300... the 250 was the other model with the domed plexi crystal... as God intended all crystals to be. The beads of rice bracelet has these cool expanding links like a vintage Rolex expanding/riveted bracelet, but the links are not exposed to wrist hairs so they don't pinch. And I won't overstretch the bracelet, or break pins. What a clever design! The cushion case makes it looks visually much larger than it really is. The dial is not large, but the overall impression is of a big, impressive watch. Thumbs up to Doxa! This thing is a 1000% winner all around.

Roger that, Pugs! Thanks to you I can post these photos of my new baby!

As you can see from my original photos, the Black Lung's bezel was in pretty rough shape, missing most of its paint. Well, I did a lot of reading and tried a bunch of different paints and techniques... and I think it came out pretty well. Check it out!

A potential solution to the United States mortgage crisis
Nanuq replied to Nightstroker's topic in The looney bin
AMEN, Chief. Perfect example. Let it crash, and crash hard. Then the people who have been responsible all along will be surrounded by opportunities. As they should be. -
Holy smokes! Where did you find that lovely "square o" dial? Please tell me it has the glossy black text on top of the white rectangle? Man oh man oh man... it's so close to perfect. It's only missing ONE thing. ........one of my genuine Superdome Tropic 39 crystals. C'mon you know this piece is worth it.

A potential solution to the United States mortgage crisis
Nanuq replied to Nightstroker's topic in The looney bin
Chief said it very well. The biggest problem with the proposed solution is that government NEVER operates as efficiently as a free market. Therefore a better solution is one where government is not involved. If the government was involved in forcing the banks to make risky loans, for whatever reason, it has been demonstrated that the government does emphatically not know as much about legitimate risk and opportunity for loss, as a lending institution. What is dramatically needed here is a large dose of personal responsibility. That will fix it. If the banks are responsible for their own well-being with no outside pressures to make loans, then they have demonstrated they know how to do so, profitably. If a homeowner is responsible for his/her good or poor choices, then they have a motivator to learn from their mistakes. The obvious answer is to remove government from the equation and let the market seek its own level. Certainly it will be horrendous for 6 months or more. But then there's all this cheap real estate laying around, and what happens? The buying spree begins all on its own. When it doesn't hurt, people make stupid choices. When there are no repercussions, there is no downside to continue making stupid choices. Let it hurt, and people will learn. That includes the banks and the buyers. Besides, bottom line is... where in the Constitution does it talk about the government's role in taking this on? It's not there. You can read it for yourself, starting with the 10th Amendment: The Constitution -
Boy I dunno... In my admittedly incomplete experience with the Mickey Dweller, I thought the "Fidel Mickey" only came on the @Walt Disney dial, not on the @Walt Disney PRODUCTIONS dial... Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me... is that a full Fidel dial, or is it just shadows on his chin?
-
Well said. In my case I'm the exception... my black dial has a black hand, very hard to see, with a white painted tip.

Isn't stainless steel spozed to be... stainless? Get some scrubby pads and strong soap and scrub the heck out of it. I mean REALLY hard. I bet it's just dirty. Or it's aluminum? Bizarre. The right answer is, of course, to buy Delta's COMEX.
-
Hey maybe THAT is what all the crud is that I've been chiseling off the back, case, bezel, bracelet... In between the lugs... I'll tell ya, this beauty has seen some action!
-
Of course not! There can never be your "last" watch, only your "next."

Thank you all, gents! So far so good, she's still keeping COSC time, having gained 4 seconds in two days. I've got almost all the gouges out of the crystal now, and in case nobody noticed from my original photos, I have removed and reinstalled the bracelet the *right* way... it was on backwards. The beauty seems pretty robust too, having been on a few snauxbike rides with me, and participating as I fixed the clutch on my boy's truck. Hey ... if the things can live through Dirk Pitt, then certainly they can survive Nanuq of the North. Magnificent piece! Those babies were made when men wore understated, serious timepieces on their wrist. No bling or gaudy colors necessary, thankyouverymuch. It shall be judged by the content of its character, not the quantity of gold plating and cubic zircons stuck to its dial. Simple, classic, timeless. Except it's keeping time. So that means... um, wait. It's "timeless" not TIMEless. As in, um... Oh heck... just wear the thing and enjoy it! She's a beauty.
-
I seriously doubt Loctite will hold it in there. Better to wait awhile until you have a better adhesive in hand.

My latest gen purchase: Seiko Diver SKX007K
Nanuq replied to imranbecks's topic in Other Brands Area
Great choice! I really like the case on that one. -
The man, the legend... Happy day, old man!
-
Thank you sir! Coming from you experts that means a lot. The watch is keeping COSC time, having lost 1 second overnight. The crystal is polishing up very nicely, and all seems tight and well. At this point I'm considering having her serviced and *maybe* repainting the bezel numbers. Other than that I'm leaving her as-is. I couldn't be more pleased!

Ah, ask and ye shall receive. Check it out! http://www.rwg.cc/members/index.php?showtopic=85758

Hah! Perfect! I know exactly how this watch feels. Just wait till you see how she cleans up!

As always, an excellent observation! the story behind it is, his bezel (for, as you guessed, Royal Navy no-deco dive times) is graduated in meters where mine is in USN feet.
