All I can say is... don't resist it. Don't even try. Many have tried, many have failed. Resistance is futile.

@Lani, you just made MY day! I read this stuff all the time (and have some degrees in it!) Did you get to the part about "elsewhere"? Ooooooooo baby! @By-Tor, you just described how free markets are supposed to operate. Provide the participants with information and rely on them to read and understand it, then let them make purchasing and selling decisions based on that information. Then nobody has to micromanage the economics, and it takes a MUCH smaller staff to watch over it. As long as the information continues to flow, it's nearly self-regulating. When it works well, it's a thing of beauty. So RWG provides the place to share information, the members here read read and read some more, then they vote with their checkbooks. -

@Client9... Nah, I won't say it. I recommend you do some reading before rubbing more salt in this wound. Now did someone mention............................... .......... a TRL? -

Thank you, but it is not we Mods and Admins that are protecting you; it is the open and free exchange of information that protects you. That's why this board exists. If you read that a dealer sells junk, you don't buy his junk... simple as that. This is the place to out the scammers, and toss out props to the guys that treat you right. Then the dealers suffer the consequences of their actions, or reap the benefits. In the end, the Admin staff are not protecting you, we're simply enabling an avenue for consequences to flow to those that deserve them. -
Hey... that's what the delectable Ms. Nanuq says about me!

I snapped this picture when I had my 6536 apart messing with the crystal. It seems 50 years of sun exposure will wrinkle *any* face.
-
As for greasing a watch, let me also add: When attaching a new crystal to a vintage Rolex I apply a tiny bit to the inside of the crystal retaining ring, and a small bit to the inner and outer faces of the watch crystal right where it meets the case, so the retaining ring presses on easier. It might have saved me cracking a few crystals, and I think it adds a miniscule additional amount of leak resistance. Emphasis on miniscule!
-
Theoretically, no. The case material damps the thermal transfer of heat to the inside of the watch cavity. When you snatch the leaky watch out of the water, it continues to heat up inside even when it's been removed. Wipe it down quickly and you'll prevent water sneaking back in at the leak as it subsequently cools. Theoretically. You won't get *all* the water from the vicinity of the leak, so you'll want to open it up again and continue waterproofing efforts. As it's open, let it dry completely before trying again.

I injured my right eye quite badly at work today ...

Man I feel for you, R. It's going to be okay or they wouldn't have let you leave... just a matter of time. No pun intended. Hang in there, friend... we're all here pulling for you. All the best, Nanuq -
My vote goes to the 5508 or 6536, the thin-case versions. ................or, the wonderfully chunky Sector Diving Team 1000!

Buy it Now? I wish... this kind of art, the price goes insane the last 2 minutes of bidding. I'm prepared to fall on my sword here pretty soon.
-
My buddy spent a lot of time diving those areas, doing the same stuff... wearing a watch he gave me. I wonder if he knows these guys? I'll ping him and see. Very cool!
-
Rats... I'm about to buy some expen$ive art and it's not Buy It Now.

The World According to Nanuq: Panerai suck, in singular AND in plural. :yucky: It's not that I don't "get" them it's just... how many iterations of the SAME THING can a company make anyway? All gold watches are hideous. Except my grandparents' gold key-wound pocket watches! Anything with diamonds or jewels or false "blingy" reflective surfaces or doo-dads that exist solely for impressing other people should be run over. Any watch that cannot survive regular HARD use, or that demands being taken off for the most rudimentary activities (like hockey) should be nailed to a tree. Any watch that shouts LOOK AT ME should be skipped far out into an ocean. Watches that catch my eye are old, round, steel, functional, easy to wear, and WORK. I don't mean they simply operate... any watch can do that. I mean WORK. Earn their keep. Pay for their own servicing every few years. Be a watch that I don't have to stop and think about before I live my life. I couldn't care less if anyone else likes my watches. I hope they think of them as fakes, and have a good laugh. Then they can join me for a beer and we'll talk about something else that matters... watches are fun, intricate mechanisms but they aren't what *matters* in life.

And it's nice to see YOU, my friend! Let's see some shots of your ever-so-lovely GMTs!
-
@DTH No... but the wearer's forearm did! I used to worry about sleeping with my 6536 on, as it has the tritium dial... and I sleep with my wrist under my head. Maybe THAT explains my weirdness? @Freddy You know you've just burst my bubble of ever owning a 6542. I wanted one because it's my birth year watch. I guess I'll just have to suffer with my 6536, which was born (about) the same month and year as I.
-
And the movement remains a mystery worthy of beers and a GTG. Is it a 1030, or 1035, or 1066? Nice writeup! When was the first "Bakelite" insert introduced?
-
@DTH Every time I see that COMEX case I can't help drooling. My oh my.
-
I think it's great when I see someone wearing a really nice DR or COMEX Seadweller. More power to 'em. Remember, these were inexpensive tool watches not that long ago. Now that gen prices have reached the ionosphere, I think collectors who have invested tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars are irritated for several reasons. Mostly, they've bought their way into the horological equivalent of a gated community and they want to remain exclusive. Does anyone here remember the Beverly Hillbillies? Same story... if a hick shows up sporting YOUR expensive watch, then you're no better than the hick. Why? Because way too many people confuse "who" they are with "what" they own. That's not the way it's supposed to work. "Who" you are comes from "what" you do for others.

I guess it's time to trot out this old lump of tin, eh?

MAKE IT VINTAGE!! Double wow factor for a domed acrylic crystal and a clear acrylic bezel insert with printing on the back...
