  1. If you don't think they're worth it and you can't see the difference, count your blessings. There are many watches about which I share your opinion and when I can't tell the difference, I buy the rep. Of course, I like to keep things simple so wtf do I know?
  2. I've never heard anyone say "wow" regarding a Rolex but when anyone comments on a watch I'm wearing, I tell them what I think is interesting about the particular watch. If they go on to ask, "Is it real?" I can honestly tell them, "Oh, I can never tell anymore". If they continue and ask, "well, how much was it?" I reply, "I don't remember". If they're a good friend or someone who appreciates reps, I'll tell them the details but otherwise, I don't really care what people think and I'm not about to give anyone fodder. I've had people hold my gen Rolexes only to comment on how cheap the bracelet feels etc. I've also told them that gens were fake only to have them say "oh yeah... I could tell by the _____" Then I tell them it's real and they get all sheepish. Most people don't know what they're looking at or why a gen is better than a rep. I'm not here to educate the world anymore than I'm here to teach pigs to sing. I buy reps for my own enjoyment. I know- I'm self-centered and selfish.
  3. Interesting post for someone with 2 posts. Maybe you should visit a little bit longer before acting like you know anything.
  4. I keep saying that Rolex steel is the whitest steel I've seen. There's something truly remarkable about it. I was wearing my sea-dweller which I've had for years and it caught my eye. I switched to a rep submariner to see if it had the same look. It was close but no cigar. It certainly would be an eye-catcher, but it lacked the luster and gleem of a gen Rolex. It's tough to describe and impossible to photograph. Reps are great- particularly super-reps, but they don't hold a light to gens. That said, I have a ton of reps and enjoy wearing them immensely, but the reps I own are ones that I only wear occasionally. I've actually owned gens of many of them but sold them because I couldn't stand the idea of $3k+ sitting in a case most of the time. The gens I have get worn regularly.
  5. And actually sent it to Rolex for service and got it back? I don't think so.
  6. If you hate the look, why would the price matter? Unless you can tell the difference between white gold and SS.
  7. Seriously. The PAM could definitely be repped and when it is I'll probably buy one.
  8. Of course, who the hell would want one in the first place? http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1224118969...icle-outset-box
  9. Any updates? This is taking FOREVER!
  10. NOT worth the trouble to download this video. Even if you're a premium member of rapid share, I still doubt it would be worth it. Maybe because I've seen it before... who knows.
  11. Still waiting. What's taking so long, dealers?
  12. No way it was a gen. Who in their right mind would swap a $15k watch with a stranger? I doubt anybody with a $15k watch would be that foolish. If you had made the swap, wouldn't YOU be disappointed to see the one you traded for have its seconds hand at 6 or worse yet, to see it ticking away because it was a quartz movement? It would be nice to believe that he was offering his gen for your rep but only because it's so unlikely.
  13. I understand your point. I don't disagree. Is it okay if I'm a fan of both? I'll take wisdom wherever I can get it.
  14. I get your point but you're mincing words. I don't mind your argument at all- as long as you don't use it on yourself to convince yourself of something that's somewhat less than true. To thine own self be true.
  15. No, but I just saw someone shilling for them.
  16. I think you're doing the right thing for yourself. I remember when you put together the white daytona. There's clear love and joy in your work. I'm not a believer that our children will have any interest in our watches, but if they do, your children will want the ones you built more than the ones you bought.
  17. I said "real" as a term of art- meaning that it's genuine. Of course our reps are real to us. I own FAR more reps than gens (something like 5 to 1) or something crazy like that. They're all convincing enough to me to feel like the real deal but I focus on styling more than function. I dive, but when I dive, I wear a dive computer- not a dive watch. I swim with my gens as well as my reps and so far, so good. The big thing keeping me in reps is that the entire cost of a rep- even a super rep- is less than ONE servicing of a gen. That is one fact I cannot get over. That said, a rep is a rep and a gen is a gen. It's my opinion that it's a mistake to confuse the two. I'm by no means bashing reps. I'm a huge fan of them. The only gens I buy are ones that can't be repped (yet). A few examples are a few watches with micro-rotors (I wish there were reps with microrotors), a doppelchronograph (with a rattrapante button that is actually functional rather than for "fun"), and an x-33 (my go to watch when I don't know what I'll be doing next). I own fewer and fewer gens and more and more reps. My wife thinks I have far too many, but when I can buy 20 reps for the price of one gen, I'm not stopping. I have a lot of watches and I can't reasonably wear all of them all the time so having a $300 watch sitting there gathering dust until I wear it is a lot more appealing than a $5k watch I wear once every 3 months. Reps are so good (from our dealers) that I can be quite happy wearing them and get 99% of the pleasure I'd get from a gen.
  18. If we're being perfectly honest though, you have none. If you had a gen, you could sell it now for $11k-$12k and who knows how much you'd get for it in the future. With yours, you'll get whatever a rep collector will pay for it. I don't know if you ever plan to sell yours- with all the (outstanding) work you've done, I doubt you'd ever want to, but there's a lot to be said for owning something that has intrinsic value. By intrinsic value, I mean a HUGE market willing to pay for it.
  19. I don't want to [censored] on anyone's cheerios, but at that cost, I'd just get the gen.
  20. I thought the same thing about hold 'em (without the dumbing down for american audiences because I don't think ANYONE really understands baccarat). It turns out that poker was the original game in the plot but I thought that using it at the height of hold 'em popularity was nothing more than pandering to the masses. I'm not even going to mention the fact that good hold 'em players never gamble unless they've got too many chips.
  21. The other problem is that after all these years of making the helium escape valve look like Ti, Rolex goes and makes it SS. A pic of the gen HEV...
  22. Too bad TTK is such a douchebag though.
  23. I don't get it. Why would someone's ignorance be insulting to you?
  24. Thanks for spreading the manure. http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/cell411.asp
