Datejust - How is the magnification on this cyclops?
RobbieG replied to DemonSlayer's topic in The Rolex Area
I think there may be several members who have slightly older gen DJ's that are more what your watch was repped after so hopefully more will post for you to compare. I was just noticing that even DJ's a year older than mine seem to have less bold date fonts. -
Yeah, the rep strap is terrible of course, but the buckle is great. The buckle is an odd 18MM. Usually straps like that taper more and are 16MM at the buckle so choices of straps are more limited if you want to use the VC buckle. The strap in the pics is a coated dress alligator from Banda.

It comes in two sizes. This is the larger version at 42.7MM. The smaller is 40MM.

Datejust - How is the magnification on this cyclops?

The mag looks pretty good to me and from my experience the mag seems to be that way on all the new DJ and DD reps I have seen. My only complaint is the same as always: I wish they would make the font itself a bit bolder like the gens are. Most reps are usually over magged and under fonted for some reason. Keep in mind that depending on the year, there are many different font presentations. Everyone tends to want to evaluate mag in a vacuum. It is all relative. The boldness of the font changes the mag so to speak. The older watches with the open 6's and 9's were not as bold and black as they are now but I believe many of those were magnified more. Now the mag is less but the fonts are bolder. Of course the watch you show is a very modern dial so I would try and evaluate very recent serials for that. Not sure the first serial year for that dial but it is probably F, D or Z. You should also know that Rolex has supposedly used a very faint single sided and colorless AR on DJ crystals since 2003 according to my AD which makes the dates and the dials in general a bit more legible. Of course they took that even one step further on the new ceramic GMT watches by adding additional AR to the cyclops as well. Maybe they will do that on all the models in the future. Who knows. And Freddy is right, nothing quite sparkles like the gen glass for some reason. Not sure why that is. Anyway, I happen to own a gen DJ. It is an M serial from 2008. Here are a couple direct head on shots for comparison... -
Thanks Toad. Some watches are just easy to shoot and this is one of those for whatever reason. There aren't many pics I shoot that I can ever say I'm truly happy with, but there are several of these that I actually like quite a lot and I'm my toughest critic. The shot you mentioned is one of my favorites as well. Mostly, I just love the piece and that makes me want to work harder at getting good setups. Watches are so much fun...

I'm listening to the first few Van Halen records a lot lately and old Stray Cats and old Clash records and Stravinsky too... -

I love the Images & Words record. Learning to Live is classsic MP drumming and a great arranging feat. Tough to remember all that. Well produced record as well. Really punchy and not washed out like what they became... -
I'm pulling for ya', but I think $3K is a pretty tall order for a nice used watch now that the new pricing has spiked again. Maybe you could find one, but the other problem is that once guys have these they hardly sell them and when you get yours you'll know why. I bet most everyone gives it a near permanent slot. They are so nice to the touch it is just beyond comprehension. I think the price is more than fair for the new watch now despite the increase even. They are really on par with VC, AP, GO for fit and finish alone and if you look at the prices that way they make better sense. I'm glad I got mine discounted but I could see why they have no prblem getting the $7500 retail that they are now. I think you should be able to source a new one in the low $5's or so if you can't find the right used one. Best of luck in any case. I know you will love it when you finally do get it.

No. The silver dial is much lighter. It looks almost white in most lighting conditions. Mine is a little harder to find. It is the rhodium dial which is also known as grey. There are many more of the silver and black dials around than these. I was looking to replace my gen YM and so this dial choice was a no-brainer for me to recreate a cooler watch with more Yachtmaster-esq colors. I also think the rhodium is the richest looking. The silver, when looking very white, can look too much like a golf ball sometimes for my taste. My second choice would be the black, but I already had a lot of black dialed divers so...

I'm about to reorganize my signature with links to all my pictorial posts and realized that I never had a complete post of all the better photos taken of the MMD. So here here it is and here are the pics... Watch and Accessories: Wristshots:

Yes, Tony's watch is a yellow gold Day-Date with President bracelet, fluted bezel and the classic old Champagne dial as I had mentioned, but I'm not sure if the dial has diamond markers or batons. I don't think it is romans - although given his heritage maybe it should be...

Yeah, but I think the Submariner is just so classic in its own right. But the PO is more interesting. For me, the way the unique hands and the contrasting brushed and polished surfaces interacting with the depth of the AR makes for a much more interesting watch. I also think it great with almost any shoes you put on it, where a modern Sub kind of just has to be on a bracelet. A Nato is OK, but better suited for a vintage watch that is banged up IMO...

Yeah, no. I have owned only two Omega reps - a UPO and an Aqua Terra with blue dial and 2892 clone. As I said, I didn't get a chance to photograph all the reps I have owned over the years. But I do love Omega as a brand though. In fact, I own a gen 42MM PO at the moment and I am still loving it... http://www.rwg.cc/members/index.php?showto...ne+planet+ocean

The VC Malte came from Joshua I believe, although any dealer should be able to source one of those I would think...

How will this financial mess affect rep world?
RobbieG replied to milsub5517's topic in General Discussion
Nah, the so called crisis is tied to Interbank issues - which is only going to get better from here anyway. Unless Chinese rep factories borrow money benchmarked to LIBOR to make cases or something I wouldn't think so. That said, I wouldn't put past them to use the crisis to somehow create artificial supply and demand issues to raise the prices... -
Almost forgot to post my wristie after the doublemint twin incident. Still wearing this today...

Holy Jumpin' Christ. I'm far too lecherous to be able to fade anything like this on here. It's the skin. Just brutal. Did you ask them to shine your crystal for you after the pic was taken? This is just unfair. Cut it out Freddy...

Nice Chief. ETA and Lello DW on that one? Hard to tell with the blackness of the dial and angle. Rgardless, the 196 has always been one of my favorite PAM's...

When I look at this I can't help but think that regardless of the election outcome, I won...

Very nice Pho. It would be interesting to see them with some effects, color mapping, different crops, etc. as well. In any case , you have some nice stuff to work with.

I agree with that for sure and I may get lynched by the PAM guys for it, but...IMO steel Pannies look great but I find them tough to wear. I find the Ti watches a little easier to deal with though which is why this is the only PAM in my collection - homage to PAM that is...
