Like some snoot on a gen forum could ever tell this from the real thing :thumbsupsmileyanim: [Edit to add] Just because I love this photo... Thanks to A and R who's generosity made this possible

That's the way to roll, amigo Absolutely, I can understand Rolex getting narked about the copyright infringement, but it's not like the gen owners actually designed and built the watches themselves, they simply purchased them I think their frustration comes from the irritation that someone 'less than them' is not only able to pull off the same image for less, but that they themselves didn't think of it first. One gen collector I encountered a few years back really was the embodiment of all the worst aspects of gen collectors: Arrogant, self-promoting, totally obsessed with Brand Image, and 100% perfection, yet for all his 'passion for watches', he only 'knew the facts and regurgitated them on command', he didn't actually 'know watches', just what they cost. He was someone who looked down on frankens as the lowest of the low, because in his view, they were putting genuine parts, into a fake watch (thus sullying the purity of the gen parts) yet because of that attitude, he totally missed the point about the level of skill required to actually build the watch itself (regardlesss of the parts going into it) and almost certainly would not have had the skill to do so himself, even if he ever did have the inclination. I admit, that's probably clouded my view somewhat, and I'm sure that there are many gen owners who are fine people, but it does seem to be a majority on those forums, who just criticize the rep industry, without having any actual knowledge or passion for watches themselves... I'm quite happy buying my fair trade watches till I win the lotto, and can then start buying gens to dismantle for parts for my projects That would really push some of those guys over the edge to know about

It is sad, because they get on their moral high horse about copyright infringement and what not, when they're the ones who are looking down on people who they perceive to be less affluent than them. As if money actually makes any difference to a person's 'moral fiber'... I've found that it's often the people with the least money, or the most (Old Money families) who are the most genuine people, it's the "I just bought an Entry Level Rolex, so I'm going to pick up some underage skanks, fuck yeah!" wannabes who are the most shallow and pathetic people... There're people here who have both reps and gens, because they appreciate watches for watches, not the price tag or the brand name [Edit to add] Sure, I can kind of see their point: "They're wearing a fake watch, what else might they be lying about...? " At least reps are not being sold at artificially high Brand Name prices, one could argue that they are the more 'honest watch'. I like to think of reps as 'fair trade' watches

There is always Method Two... Just be sure to only have the flame on the cyclops for a couple of seconds at a time, so you only heat the glue, not the entire crystal That's a method I didn't know, thanks for the tip

Of course not, they just like flashing a Rolley to impress the jailbait (and they would be jailbait, because older women would see them for the inadequates they are )

Which watches in your collection are true 'keepers'?
TeeJay replied to ubiquitous's topic in General Discussion
Tudors have all the benefits of a Rolex design heritage, with none of the recognition (so never challenged) and considerably more variety in the models when compared to Rolex-branded equivalents -
+1 Says it all really... It's their loss

I just had a thought, bro, if you were to swap the bracelets between the Tudor Oyster and the Tudor Chrono, I think they'd be more complementary to the dials -
I did quite like the comment on there about gluing crystals in, I've found that an excellent way of ensuring the perspex crystal in my 6200 project remains watertight I wonder how many of them could built a watch from parts...

It's looking good, bro, especially with the smooth bezel The one thing I would suggest, is that I think that the dial would really pop if put in a two tone case

Anyone know a good place for custom made dials (logo)?
TeeJay replied to chrgod's topic in General Discussion
I'm not sure, but I think I've read before that 50 is the 'magic number', and don't forget, if these're custom logo'd dials, no copyright issues, so no risk on shipping (other than being taxed by customs ) Best of luck with your project -

How many times in the past year has RG gone down? How many times has RWG gone down in the past year? Every time it has happened, RWG has provided a place for the members of RG to hang out till the servers got back online. Maybe if RWG was hosted on cheaper servers, subscriptions would not be necessary. Then again, if it was hosted on cheaper servers, it would not be available the next time RG's servers go down... Keeping the lights on here, allows people to be here, which allows the community to form... The reason I rarely log onto RWI or RG? I simply don't need to, RWG has the level of activity I like, not too much, not too stagnant, and some truly awesome people as members At the end of the day, if you don't want to pay a subscription, you don't have to... -
The friendliest and most generous group of people I've ever incountered, either offline or online. I'd be proud to call anyone here a friend and a brother, which is more than I could say about the snoots on any gen forum What a bunch of elitist sadsacks

Which watches in your collection are true 'keepers'?
TeeJay replied to ubiquitous's topic in General Discussion
These are definite keepers: Incomplete, this needs a new movement (Swiss) and appropriate hands for the gifted dial. The insert and pearl are mods I did today, and will likely remain in place till better quality parts become available. When I wore the body of this watch on my honeymoon, it looked like this: Since then, it has been completely regenerated into this: Gifted dial and movement make this watch mean a lot to me. The fact I have literally built it from parts makes it feel like my watch, and other than possibly upgrading the insert and pearl (if I can be bothered) I'd say this watch is just as I want it, and my ideal beater This was on my wrist when my best friend got married in a traditional Shinto ceremony, although it looked like this at the time: This watch has had a lot of time invested in it, and probably represents the first watch I fully built myself, as I also had to fabricate the dial. It still needs to have a coin-edge bezel installed, but to be honest, that's pretty low on my list of project priorities To me, this watch represents what I believe to have been the watch described in the novel of On Her Majesty's Secret Service. This watch was a wedding present from my bro, Nikki6. Not really much more I can say about it than that : This watch is a keeper for the simple fact that it makes a good backup when needed, and, I'm very happy with the lumejob I did on the dial. Other than that, I don't like it. I don't like wearing it, I don't like that it doesn't have a timing bezel, and I don't like that the dial makes my head hurt when trying to tell the time... Sorry, Steve, this one's just not for me... I'm pretty sure what I'm going to do be doing with this gifted Daytona case set, but, as always, cash means it's going to take time to finish the way I want it to be... So far, I've removed the 'Daytona' text, added lume to the markers (not as per gen, but I don't care about accuracy if functionality can be enhanced ) as well as brushing the bezel and re-enameled the scale. To come, will be new movement (so possibly new hands needed) black bezel, and Tropic strap. -

As mentioned before, don't think of it as a subscription, but a contribution to a community which gives a lot to its members. You can, and have, edited the post here, you don't need to pay to do that, all supporter status means, is that it won't say "edited by" each time you edit... Sometimes, I will put [Edit to add] if a thought occurs to me after a post, it's really not a biggie. The info is publicly available here, no need for a subscription to read it, I just saved it incase the thread was to be deleted (unlikely, as that's not how the mods here roll) so the info could be retrieved. I didn't realize it was also on RG and RWI, I very rarely visit those forums. At the end of the day, we're all here because we love watches, and useful information is useful to everyone -

Jeez, talk about taking your ball home because you don't want to play any more... -
Fantastic review, and welcome to the party I totally understand your point about the cyclops, I don't like them myself, so I tend to remove them from my watches. There are two methods for doing this, well, one method, two approaches, depending on how brave you're feeling Method One: Decase the movement and push the crystal out of the case from the back. Using something to protect your fingers, use a butane cigar lighter to heat the cyclops, thus melting the glue enough to allow the cyclops to drop off, or be pushed off with a flat blade. Once the cyclops is off and the glue residue is removed, replace the crystal, applying firm pressure to re-seal the case. Method Two: Do not decase the movement or remove the crystal from the case, but apply the flame from a butane lighter very sparingly to the cyclops. Literally, two seconds at a time, trying to remove the cyclops with the blade each time, until you are successful in popping the cyclops off. DO NOT hold the flame over the crystal for a prolonged time in the hopes of 'speeding up the melt' of the glue, you will only succeed in heating the crystal, thus causing it to expand in the case, which will in turn, cause the crystal to crack under the pressure from its expansion. I have had this happen, and as a result, had to replace the entire crystal. Applying the flame for a few seconds at a time might take longer to allow the cyclops to be removed, but it will minimize the risk of heating the crystal. This method is okay if you cannot remove the crystal yourself, but, be very mindful of the very real risk of cracking the crystal if it is over-heated...

Was that the instance where it was possible to see how the watermarks had been removed from the photos and replaced by that dealer's own watermarks?
