Couldn't agree with you more strongly. I think that's why I've been feeling my GMT Sub so much. Sure, the SMP was inheritance money. That's sentimental value. But looking down at your watch and knowing that you built it yourself, that it does what it does because you chose to make it that way, well, that just blows anything else out of the water. It's a step up from custom tailoring, because you haven't paid someone else to do it for you, you did it yourself. I guess it's akin to the pride a parent must feel in their children's accomplishments. For me, reps give me an affordable 'parts box' to play with. Even if I won the lotto, I wouldn't go and buy a load of expensive gens, because personally, I don't think the price tags are justifiable. Overheads and advertising costs? BS. Those losses were recouped long ago with interest, there's just no need for a watch (unless it contains precious metals) to be costing crazy money. That said, if I could afford to buy the gens of the watches I plan on buying as reps as parts donors for the GMTCSub I plan on building, I'd still do it. I wouldn't care that the ADs would probably shit bricks and have a heart attack to see such watches cannibalized, I'd still be really happy that I was wearing my watch, which I built, my way Have it your way... For everyday wear, I'd agree, mechanical is much nicer, but, I think there is still a time and a place (or rather, activities and environments) where the accuracy of a digital could mean the difference between life and death... I agree with a lot of what you've said, but that particular phrase made me think of something. In the past, people used to carry their watches in pockets, rather than on their wrists... Perhaps from the perspective of someone from that era, they might see people using cell phones for the time, as a sign of people going back to pocket based, rather than wrist based time keeping, regardless of the actual mechanism being used to track the time Just a thought To quote from Ogasmo, "I don't want to sound like a queer, or nothing..." but that put a lump in my throat I actually read that more as "if you die, your mechanical watch will run down and die with you", it really gives the watch the personality of a loyal companion, who chooses to die with its Master, knowing it won't be needed anymore. If someone is not truly a watch enthusiast, just someone who 'wears a watch to tell the time', then I think they might put less emotional value to their watch, and thus less willing to spend larger amounts of money on a service, as they might rather put that money towards a new watch, rather than fixing the old one. I think it's only when someone actually appreciates a particular watch, that they begin to consider it something worth repairing when it 'breaks', rather than just replacing when it 'breaks'...

I recently performed a movement transplant in my black and grey Suunto Clone. Despite the two cases being theoretically identical, I had to tweak the contacts on the new movement so it would make the proper contact with the case pushers. I used a pair of jeweler's 'wire-bending pliars', and it took quite a bit of trial and error to get the connections correct. Crazy as this might sound, I felt the same pleasure in doing the work, and had the same feeling of satisfaction at the end, as I have felt from working on a mechanical movement. No. The 45mm should have a 22mm lug size, the 42.5mm has a 20mm lug size. There is an older generation of replica of 45mm with a 20mm lug width As far as I know, the only way of getting a 20mm Planet Ocean strap (which is very different from the 20mm Seamaster strap) is an Authorized Omega stockists. I do not know of any 20mm Planet Ocean strap replicas (although there are replicas of the 20mm Seamaster strap). The Seamaster strap looks fine on the Planet Ocean, that's what I've had on both my 42.5 and 45mm (which had the 20mm lug size), but strictly speaking, if you want accuracy, the Seamaster strap is not correct

It's an interesting topic to be sure. It was a digital watch which first got me interested in watches in the first place: The Seiko worn in Octopussy. I tend to primarily wear mechanical watches nowadays, but, I do have some digital watches in my collection. The Omega X-33, and two Clones of a Suunto Vector. One in all black, the other in black and grey. To be honest, I bought the Clones more as collection watches (as Suuntos are the watch of choice on Stargate:Atlantis) but, if I really felt the need to wear something which was bullet-proof for timing and not caring if it got smashed up, I'd wear one. My preference for mechanical watches is aesthetic rather than functional. If 'they' were to make a digital watch which looked as good as a Rolex or an Omega, then I might be persuaded, but it would have to look like a high-end watch (in terms of quality and aesthetics, rather than 'looking expensive') rather than a nickel-plated saturday night special...

Personally, I would say go for the more subdued Oyster bracelet, as that won't draw attention away from the watch head, which the Presidential might well do

But, either way, the information is incorrect, as the movement for a 112 simply should not hack. It is a manual winding movement, not an automatic. I don't want to drag things really off topic, and I'm pleased that Andrew has come through for you on your deals, but to be honest, there have been a lot of incredibly heated arguments in the past about the accuracy of Andrew's listings. At the end of the day, you might be okay with him posting incorrect information, but some people might not know a lot about watches, believe entirely what they read, and thus rely on the information dealers put on their sales as being 100% accurate, and as a community, we need to look beyond our own individual good experiences, and point out errors when they occur, as that is the only way that people who are new, are not sold incorrect goods, or think they need something different to what they are actually expecting, based on dealer information

Thanks, I have to admit, it might not have come out 100% as I had planned or imagined it to look, but it is precicely what I wanted The jeweler told me that the Titanium will darken over time, so that'll really enhance the look I have to admit, the engraved lines are actually wider than I originally envisaged... For some reason, I wrote 1mm on the design, thinking that they might not have been able to do a .5mm V cut... Don't get me wrong, I think it looks the nuts, but engravings are definitley more noticeable than I intended, as the cuts creates an optical illusion making them look wider I guess I'll have to remember that old saying, measure twice, cut once Something I would say, if you're thinking of something similar, is that the engravings are pretty detectable between the fingers if the ring rotates (although I might get used to that over time) so when I drew on the additional lines, I kept it so that there are only a few lines 'on the sides', but more lines 'on the top and bottom'. It means that when you pull out the crown to reset the time, the second hand stops sweeping. Now. I've never had a single manual movement (which a 112 has) hack when the crown is pulled. Automatic movements hack. Rolexes, Omegas, Breitlings, etc, but I've never seen that on a Panerai... Unless, that is the difference between an Asian manual movement, and a Swiss manual movement. All my movements (automatic and manual) have been Asian. The Automatics all hack, but none of the manual movements hack. I hope that answers your question

The pattern on the silver ring, reminded me of the random pattern of the lines, so I had the wedding ring made to resemble to color of the Stargate, and the contrast between the brushed outer surface, and highly polished lines achieves that

Ah, I didn't realize it was that easy to get hold of I remember reading that it wasn't a good idea to use cyanoacrylate for a dial fix, and then re-case the watch almost immediately after, as the fumes from the glue would condense on the inside of the crystal I've removed cyclopses before, but never wanted to re-install one, so I'd never needed to know 'Phase Two' of the procedure

Thanks for the clarification, I think I get what you're meaning. Everyday = One basic watch head, which can be customized with straps to match with the wardrobe of the day. Casual = Something which will go with pretty much anything without having to worry about strap swaps... I like that idea

Indeed, it's always interesting to find out about others motivations and themes to their collections (No 'making others tick' puns here today ) Until very recently, I would simply buy a new watch every year (normally around birthday or christmas) and then wear it solidly for a year.
