Discussion topic: Have we seen the end of high quality reps?
perry563 replied to RWG Technical's topic in General Discussion
The point is.....one of the reasons forums like this exisit is to ensure this type of dealing...actually its the worst possibly dealing aside from not shipping a product to a paying customer at all.....is kept to a minimium. If The Zigmeister is seeing this underhanded business upscaling then we ALL should step forward and demand that the "trusty" sellers do something to correct it. If we all sit back and do nothing the end result is only going to be worse and worse quality. Who on this forum can ask Andrew, Josh and others to come on this forum and answwer these questions? Just saying its same old same old is not good enough. I am really surprised that the members here are not in a real uproar about this. If a product is advertsised a swiss ETA then we should get a swiss eta. If its not then tell us what the hell it is before we spend our money. -
Discussion topic: Have we seen the end of high quality reps?
perry563 replied to RWG Technical's topic in General Discussion
I have 20 or so reps with most of them SWISS ETA (at least advertised as such). They all preform very well telling very accurate time. The Asian ETA copies I have had which were THREE in number......One was faulty out of the box and was replaced, another (its replacement) I am now wearing on my wrist a NOOBmariner while the third I bought for a coworker (another Sub.....Beginmariner). I can tell you its obvious immediatly when you try changing the time and date that these were (are) NOT swiss ETA. With all the swiss eta's the date changes like clockwork at 12 midnight and the "feel" when you pop out the crown and move the hands is smoother and exudes a higher build quality. In other words I can easily tell which watches contain what movements (asian copy vs ETA). I am sure others as or more experienced than I feel the same? -

The problem is that there is no way to tell in advance. How is anyone to know that the 300 buck swiss eta driven rep thay are buying is actually a 100 buck rep with a POS movement? We need to get with the dealers we all know and put pressure upon them to try to ensure we get what we pay for. If the new price is going to be 100 more for a TRUE swiss ETA then so be it. Just dont lie to us and in the end sell JUNK. My thought always was that when I spend the extra bucks for swiss eta that I was getting a watch that is cosmetically very similar to a much more expensive Gen but at a low price BUT with true swiss eta reliability. -

This news is very disturbing to me. I thought that if I was paying a huge premium for swiss eta movements that is what I was getting. I do have to say that I have 20 or so reps and none of the "swiss eta" ones have ever failed me. I am going to think twice and perhaps three times before I shell out big bucks for a rep advertised as containing a swiss eta. Getting a real sour taste in my mouth over all this for sure. -
Hate to keep on saying this BUT.........Josh, Andrew are both great to deal with but there is a level of QC that is missing as compared with TTK. The odds of getting a lemon are greater dealing with Josh and Andrew as compared with TTK. The other thing to consider is that you are buying an asian movement which even if all the QC work is done can prove to be problematic. However to take everything to a very high level I would very strongly suggest that you buy from BK. For 360 bucks you get the WORKS and a reliable timepiece that will last you potentially for many decades. Its the same watch as above but BK adds not only a full QC but he will modify the watch to make it as close to gen as possible....reshaped CG, great pearl/recessed insert, gen like crown and tube, o rings greased to improve waterproofness. Add to this that you get a swiss ETA movement that can be serviced by any watchmaker (that would agree to service a rep that is). What you will have in the end is the closest thing you can buy as compared with a gen without any worries about the typical issues of the pearl/insert popping off, bad pearl, oversized CK, oversized crown etc that you will find with the basic NOOBS etc. I have bought 7 subs over the last 3 years and I would have stopped at TWO if I had been able to buy a BK mariner in the beginning (black and LV). Its more costly but in the end much more of a reliable timepiece and a higher level of satisfaction. AND nobody is going to call you out for wearing a rep Rolex...its that close to the real thing.

Gold is selling for over 900 US dollars an oz. Gold is selling for over 900 US dollars an oz.
-
With hollow midlinks there probably is not as much gold on that watch as one would think.
-
There is also a small dent on one of the end links. So either I replace them and have no dent or replate and live with the imperfection. Its not a big dent but of course my eyes go right to it when I look at the time!
-
Its a TW best from what I can see. I can buy a MBW bracelet from TTK for 100 bucks but it will be plated gold. I guess I could take the end links off and get them placed on mine but then again the gold color may not match.
-
How about the end links???????? If these are plated and wear then it does not matter that the rest of the links are 100% gold. Also.....is the bezel and crown gold or gold plated???
-
Guys.....I bought a TT TW best sub from a scam site several years ago (actually the day before I discovered the NON scam sites such as this one). Now that i know something about rep subs I know what I bought is a TW best with what I am pretty sure is true solid 14K gold on the mid links, bezel and crown. The end links however are plated and started to show through a few months ago. I disgarded the bracelet and put on a black strap. It looks great but when I see pics of a TT with the correct braclet my heart sinks. My questions are as follows: 1) Is there any way to replace the end links that are worn? The bracelet is just perfect in every other way. Best I have seen on any rep sub. 2) Would a NOOB TT bracelet fit on a TW best case? I have heard that there is a new Noob with solid mid links that would look perfect but will it fit? Any other suggestions??????

In terms of the day/date always be sure the change it with the hands at the 6:30 position. They should turn smoothly however if you tried changing with the hands say at 12 (as an example) you could damage the mechanism.

I thought of that but I paid 100 to install the superdome and waterproof. Now to remove it, install the flat top and then remove and install the superdome on the DR we are talking another 200. What is the stock crystal that comes with the MBW DR? Which dial is better the one on the single OR the double red MBW? Does Clarke sell a flat top T39? -

I have a 1680 with a Clarke flat top crystal and as I mentioned my GWSD with a superdome. I would like a DRSD to "complete" my vintage collection. However now that I installed a superdome on my GW I feel that the DRSD will be too similar looking as compared with my GW since to be correct it should also have a superdome. I assume that a DRSD with a flat T39 would not in any way be accurate? With the great white having a superdome it is at least plausable that some watches left the factory that way since the preceding model, the DRSD, had a superdome. What do you think? -

I installed a Clarke superdome on my MBW GWSD. At the time I was told that there was a transitional model back in the late 70's that had the superdome. Is this true or is my watch now totally wrong? Also my GWSD has hollow center links and the correct back. Did I recieve an updated model? -
I just LOVE this watch but how in the heck are you going to be able to get it serviced when that time comes? From what I am hearing the only way to open the case back is by sending the watch back to the factory in China!!!! I was ready to buy this watch until I inquired and heard this from the dealer. Now I still want the watch BUT may need to buy something else.
-
I have an interesting question/observation. If you look at the case back on the Dewitt it looks like they are using rivets instead of screws to hold the case back on. Now when this watch needs servicing (the movement that is) how does the watchmaker take the back off to get to the movement??? Do we have a disposable watch here??????? (once the movement fails its Un fixable) Does anyone know how the case back is removed?????

Trusty's Beginner Sub $78 vs "Newbie" Edition $98
perry563 replied to daytona1980's topic in The Rolex Area
The difference is the sellers ability to QC each watch before they are sent. From what I have read a good % of these watches have QC issues from the factory. The better dealers will QC each watch before they are shipped. I would urge everyone who is looking for a top quality Sub to look at the BK Mariner. He examines and mods everything before they are shipped so the odds of getting a lemon are very low. Get a fully modded Bk mariner with swiss ETA movement and you will have a masterpiece for decades that just about no one will be able to tell from a gen. If I had to do it all over again this is where I would start. -

Cows are milked until they can't give any more and they are then slaughtered. Milk is a contribution to as well is it not, its an important food source. Cows are and have been for many centuries used as a food source. Whether its milk or its own flesh thats what cows are bred for....food. You wont ever see a cow fighting in a war, trained for law enforsement or used as eyes for the blind. Dogs have been bred for helpful activities to aide man NOT as a food source. This is because of their incredible intelegence and physical abilities. Horses even more so, but they're legal meat in parts of Europe. A bit different. Horses have been used for transportation and also a food source. They are not at the level of dogs in terms of there ability to perform tasks that only a human can complete. With that said; I understand that pigs are even more intelligent... Yet I have no problem eating bacon, pork roasts, ribs, etc. It is a cultural thing Never saw a seeing eye pig nor one trained to stalk criminals, find lost children or fight in military battle. Pigs have always been bred to be used as a food source. I agree of course that it boils down to culture and economics but that does not make it right to torture and kill and eat an animal that has a level of intelegence that allows it to learn activities that only a human can provide. The idea is that dogs are highly intellegent animals that have stood by man for thousands of years side by side. Dogs are treated like men when they are killed in battle or law enforcement. But we say its perfectly OK to torture and kill them for food? Its NOT ok.......dogs are an accepted food source in these third world nations BUT its N O T ok. I am no cat lover and the killing of cats is not nearly as wide spread as that of dogs. I was told while I traveled through China that cat meat tasted sour. Dog meat was "sweet".
-
Dogs and cats shouldn't have any more 'rights' than cattle, pigs, chickens and deer. If people say they should, I ask why? If people were to say 'Well, they're more intelligent' then I would like to point out, what about the apes and monkeys such as Chimps and Gorillas who are killed for illegal bushmeat. They are probably amongst the most intelligent animals on earth, I mean for [censored]s sake a gorilla called Coco learnt American Sign language!! The difference is that in China (others) dogs and cats are an acceptable food source wheras the killing of chimps/gorillas is an illegal activity. The outcry over the mistreatment/killing for food of dogs and cats is that they are so closely linked through the ages as pets for man. Not only pets but dogs are work partners standing alongside man not only in terms of activities like cattle and sheep herding but also fighting in battle in both WW I and WWII (others), law enforsement and trained to be the eyes of the blind.

I have been to China several times on business. Each trip was quite a few weeks long. In the major cities I never came across any signs of offering dog/cat in restaurants. However as you make your way out of the major cities into small towns where most live in poverty you will see signs (usually crude handpainted) above restaurants (and you must understand everything I saw outside the major cities and towns were horrible poverty stricken dumps) offering dog as well as cat. I was actually in a restaurant in central china where in the room next to the one I was in with customers they were carving up a whole dog. Just so you all understand...the "restaurant" had no front door, no hot water or soap to wash your hands and the bathroom was large and unlit with a wooden trough on one side for a urinal and holes in the ground without stalls for privacy. Of course as typical in China no toilet paper. The sink had no faucet but instead constantly running cold water. And of course there are the flies.......... If you ever have the oppertunity to visit China try to stay in the major cities. The great wall is a drive from Bejing and that would be the only place I would think of that would lure me away from the city. India is on a totally different and far lower level than even China. Its the only place I have ever been that I have no desire whatsoever to return.
