  1. Looks pretty cool. Is there anything that can be done about the rehaut looking very flat? It looks like on the gen it might be similar but the curvature of the plexi more or less masks it. I dunno, I could be wrong here
  2. Another great lead. Thanks a ton whoopy, I'll get in contact with him. Before I do, I'll have to figure out what movement to use which would depend on the case... so I might have to figure that out first
  3. Thanks for the input guys. Whoopy, that dial mock-up is awesome! I'll send you a PM regarding it. About the case and hands: who do you guys think I could work with? The hands seem to be similar but not identical to DJ hands that have been on some DJs. Do you guys think MMM could help me out in making a custom case?
  4. Title says it all. This watch has captivated me for almost as long as the big crowns have. It looks like it is similar to a 1016 but it has a slimmer profile (owing to the fact that it is hand-wound) and different hands/movement than a 1016. Of course, the dial is different too. I could see this being a challenging but rewarding project, and am curious if anyone has any experience here, or has any suggestions on where one might begin. I would imagine sourcing an appropriately sized case and maybe shaving it down to spec would be the best way to start, but I'm definitely not the most knowledgeable here! Oh, and here's a link with a little discussion on the watch: http://blogs.christies.com/longitude/brands/rolex/rolex-commando-an-alternative-rolex/
  5. Yeah, I wouldn't be very happy with that paint or that pearl.
  6. Super cool, can't wait to see how this keeps progressing
  7. I'd still recommend sending it to Micky. He's graciously offered his skilled services!
  8. Looks awesome. I'm curious about what one does with the handset in this case. I think sourcing a 5513 handset is reasonable enough, but do you just hope the lume will roughly match?
  9. I've sent MMM a couple PMs to figure out some details about the build, thanks again for the suggestions. Nice to have such knowledgeable/specialized people on here!
  10. Thank you both for the input. I've decided you're both right, to go with a non-original movement. Looks like it will be either a 2834 or 2836-2; does anyone know the corresponding merits to these two movements in this sort of build?
  11. Alternatively, if anyone knows of a good movement alternative, I would also be open to hearing about that. I am mostly interested in a 3055 or 3155 though!
  12. I'm looking at a SS case daydate build, and would like to use a genuine dial and genuine movement. It looks like, with exception of dial foot length, dials can be used pretty much interchangeably across the 3055 and 3155 movement for the 18xxx DD. I found one movement w/ dial and hands on the bay, and that's it. Does anyone know where I could find a 3055 or 3155 more easily? What are these movements even priced at?
  13. Thanks for the three good leads guys! It looks like a flat dial, quickset, and sapphire model may be the way to go. But, are there any steel cases available for those models? I'm wrapping up an exciting 6538 project currently, and all I will need is a better bezel insert for that particular build. After that, it's onto a new project, and I think I'd like to pursue this one a little bit more...
  14. Cool to hear there is a happy ending in sight. Unfortunately it happens every now and again
  15. I'd like to build a franken daydate, but as a personal rule I prefer steel watches over gold. Mostly because I don't take my watches off for much, work and manual labor included. Are there any high quality cases out there for, say, an 1803 that were made in steel? Is there anyone out there that might be worth asking for a one-off? Thanks all.
  16. Looks like a great place for some hiking
  17. This definitely happens. A fluid running over an empty space creates a low pressure (aka a relative vacuum) in that space by an effect called the Venturi Effect. Might be worth plugging with something!
  18. For the price I might expect the case to be unpolished. Who knows what breathing room there is on the price but I would try and move it closer to 9k as well
  19. My numbers here might not be right, but from a quick google search I think they are: I think this watch (famous RCO 6263, thought to be one of a kind so I think it's the same one?) sold for $1,089,106 USD in Nov 2013. Today, that money has a buying power of $1,115,747.41 USD. If this watch sells for the asking price, that means it will have yielded a profit of about $34,252 USD! Minus cost of insured shipping, of course... All in all, a 3% ROI does not seem so good for such an ultra high risk investment. Maybe Bob Maron is thinking the Daytona bubble isn't doing so well.... with a little more googling it looks like there may be more examples of RCO 6263s out there, so maybe Bob is fetching a nicer profit than I think!!
  20. I love the SCG build. I've been planning a 6542 build after my 6538, but may end up going for a SCG because they look so unique! For whatever reason, it's a less popular one I guess...

    1016 hands

I wonder if there has been any modding work to try and give flat hands a more curved shape. I have tried this before with some cheap hands, for about half an hour, and the results seemed promising. I didn't continue because it was a matter of curiosity, and not necessity in my case! Those hands look great. Any intention to relume to match the dial more closely?
  22. The watch is obviously to die for, but IMO the real star here is that hand set... With the insert at a close second. Beautiful.
  23. What a watch! Congrats on the finished project - the effort on sourcing good parts shows. Anything else on the horizon?
  24. I've shaved a dial on a lathe before. You have to make sure to mount it perfectly centered, and then just slowly eat away (slowly being the keyword here, it's easy to overdo it by accident)
  25. I actually contacted yuki about that a short while ago and as it turns out, he's discontinued it. The Vietnamese cases may be one's last hope
