  1. I got a great milsub dial from Whoopy and I'm excited to get this project going. I need a case to house this build and am looking for recommendations on the best case I could use right out of the box. Meaning, as little modding as possible. I'm in the throes of another build right now and this is my fun relaxed one in comparison. Whoopy mentioned others have used Cartel cases in the past but I'm very far out of the loop on 5513/5517 projects and am looking for a little bit of guidance. I'd just search, but I think I saw that a new 5513 case came out recently and am looking for the most up-to-date info. Hell, I would even settle for no fixed lugs, and just weld those myself later. Thanks for the help! edit: figure it's worth mentioning the dial is 26.5mm so I'm looking for a case that takes this dial
  2. That crown tube also looks like it has seen better days... Oxidation?
  3. I happened upon this guy when he posted his first photo to Instagram. He's very nice, even followed me back. Haha!
  4. 5517 used a 1520 so that is out. Could be a 5513, 5512, 5510 (unlikely because dbane already has the famous 6538!), and 5508. My money is on a nice 5513
  5. I'm no expert on 9411s or their part availability, but I would hazard a guess that out of all the components you would need, a crystal and rotor are among the easiest to source. Could be wrong though!
  6. Cool video, seems a lot less artificial than talking watches by hodinkee
  7. I got my start with reps at RWI, and was a pretty stereotypical noob (who has the best sub?!). My interests shifted more towards custom builds which, it seems, is an interest more appropriate for RWG.
  8. That guy's been trying to offload that dial for ages! He would take a lowball offer for sure.
  9. Getting my ass kicked on finals, so too busy to decorate my apartment
  10. Everest bands only makes bands for the regular oyster case afaik. I met the founder a few months back, awesome guy! has no intention of making bands with integrated endlinks for any model other than the standard oyster lug though. edit: i know the lug shape is different in the yachmaster everrose but i don't know if it's different as far as the fit of an endlink would be concerned, so it might work anyway
  11. You can score some nice inserts from this guy in singapore, goes by the name of Tonny. he has an ebay account called tonnywatches, but advertises more of his items on instagram. the insert in question: https://www.instagram.com/p/-oDX0eBghw/
  12. I've heard gen cases for 6542s can be pretty pricey though. Considering that, plus the movement and dial, it seemed like a price that is just above reasonable. Only issue is the case has been polished to hell.
  13. it's possible some of their bigger ticket items might not come with that luxury. i can't imagine them mailing over some extra planet ocean links for free, but maybe i am wrong
  14. looks like it has a gen service dial, gen case, gen movement. Insert is aftermarket, hands might be too but i'm in the middle of finals so i can't be bothered to take a second look! figured it would be a launching point for anyone interested - curious what you all think of the price. http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=tree&goto=7158561&rid=0#msg_7158561
  15. They're the biggest group for a reason
  16. what I wouldn't do for that 6200 insert!!
  17. Pitting highlights yet another benefit to ceramic cases. Ceramics might be a good amount more brittle, and have their own chemical drawbacks, but by and large are less susceptible to many of the blights steel has to deal with: easy scratching, corrosion, and pitting. I think there is a lot of materials engineering that has yet to hit the watch industry. One series of materials I'm interested in seeing develop would be impregnated ceramics: porous ceramic matrices can be manufactured and later impregnated with metal alloys, creating a sort of hybrid material that features characteristics of both ceramics and metals. I think Hublot began some work on impregnated ceramics with their magic gold, which was significantly harder (read: less susceptible to scratching) than standard 18k, but was still an 18k composition by the definition of gold purity. I wonder how the material might behave if impregnated with steel alloys instead of gold; steel obviously has its own issues with corrosion, like the fellow on VRF mentioned. On a micro scale, it's possible that the multiple steel/ceramic/steel interfaces on the surface of the case might actually lead to the steel bits corroding just slightly more than the ceramic, and ultimately lead to even more pits where corrosive materials can easily deposit in these micro-pits. IMO, the materials situation will be a significant part of watchmaking's future, as long as the typically traditional watch companies are willing to accept that the future of watchmaking will be scientifically exciting and not just improvements of movements.
  18. The amount of knowledge across the users of this board is impressive. I'm sure you've only scratched the tip of the iceberg, I learn new stuff every time I load up the page.
  19. Is this the one with the true length power reserve?
  20. I think the issue is stem height, not length. In other words, the center line of the crown tube and the insert for the stem do not line up.
  21. Looks seriously great, I'm loving the texture of the lume and how well the hands match the dial. I'd also prefer to go the service insert route, but both options look great.
  22. I'm not so sure. it seems to me that Omega has had a more consistent quality showing in the luxury market than Breitling, especially in the last couple years. Makes sense that they'd be repped more
