Good morning, As previously stated I have the vintage bug. I have been searching for vintage dials. I found some posts about the MQ dials and have contacted him. What do the vintage experts think of the MQ refinished gilt dials? In conversation with Minh, he stated they are refinished like gen with the plate showing through as text. They are $900 so looking for more information before dropping that kind of coin. Are these reasonably comparable to a gen or the Ivan dials? Thanks

Vintage madness is there any hope for me?
droptopman replied to droptopman's topic in The Rolex Area
Dang, I was afraid of this.....sounds like most of you have given up any hope of ever overcoming this affliction. At least I know I am not alone. Oh well it will not kill me, my wife might though. Oh and just for clarification. No negative sentiment at all towards the BK Sub C, a great piece, expertly assembled by a true professional. A good friend made an offer I could not refuse shortly after I received it so I sold it to him, probably the one and only rep I have ever made money on:) His choice not mine. He had to have it and would not wait to order one so paid an impatience fee to pry it off my wrist. Also plan to keep my TC Sub and my dress watches build by Matt, but the rest will probably go up for sale in the near future. My name is droptopman and I am a watchaholic.....there admitting it is the first step. -
They are great pieces. I miss mine been off getting a new movement for months... Sent from my droptop using telepathy.

I have had an affinity for Rolex's for 30+ years, but for whatever reason I really had not spent any time looking at vintage pieces. I would buy a new Rolex, wear it a few years and then trade it in on another new watch. Usually different models, generally favored Submariners, but also tried a Daytona, a DJ, a YM...... I had been shopping for a gen Sub C when I found this place. I joined this forum to learn about modern Rolex's and if I really wanted to spend the money on a new "bigger" looking Submariner, so maybe I could try a rep out to see if I really liked it. First rep I bought here was a BK Sub C and it was also the first rep I sold. I did figure out that the reps here are very good and I could have a bunch of nice watches in stead of 1 new gen. I acquired several modern rep versions since I joined and they are nice pieces and I wear them in my rotation, but none really do "it" for me like my gen 16613 did when I bought that way back in 1987. I just knew it was the right piece. So the more time I spend here the more I am fascinated with vintage pieces. It is weird how I missed this all the years, the intricate details, the elegant cases, the simplistic beauty...So this leads me to the last several weeks where I am crazy obsessed with vintage pieces. To the point where I spend a majority of my free time reading and studying and shopping. This probably would not be that bad if I actually narrowed it down to 1 piece, but I want several which leads to doing 3 vintage builds at once. I do not really have the knowledge to pull off one without help and I am trying to do 3, been sourcing parts and information all over the place. Not sure why I am writing all this. Maybe its a confession or maybe a cry for help Does anyone do interventions for this type of thing Is there any hope for me?

Beautiful piece. Nice choice on parts. The white dial with silver tone numerals looks great in the silver tone case. Matt's work is outstanding and he is one of my favorite people on the planet. Enjoy and wear in good health.

Thank you, This was my first franken and my first Matt build piece. I know many members are not gold fans, but this piece just seems to work for me. I will never part with it. Kind of a hybrid with a modern case set and gen vintage dial and strap. Got lucky with this dial, it just has layers of depth. The end pieces just complete it for a nice comfortable dress watch. Maybe I am biased because it was my first, but Matt really did a great job on this piece.

MMM DD with the new end pieces for strap wear. Really liking this set up. Sent from my droptop using telepathy.

Very nice work. That case is nice and thin now and those cgs look great. I agree, working on case mods is fun. I also used a dremel and lots of hand filing and sanding. Hard work but very enjoyable. I had similar result around the lug holes on the 1016 case. Next one I will pay more attention to that area and tape it off or fill the holes with glue or something so they do not enlarge too much. I have a couple of real ***** submariners I got at a yard sell just to take apart and do some case mods. Going to take the cg's off on one of them.

What a beautiful time piece, especially considering all the obstacles that were overcome in the process. I have been looking for an appropriate case for one of these for months and months. Always searching sales forums all over the place. Now that I have everything sourced for the 5513, I will get back to figuring out a way to build one of these. Your last picture speaks to me since I have a franken 16750 and would love to place a 6542 next to her....

Thanks for all the responses. I got my numbers mixed up on the movements, I meant a 2846, but will use a 2824 because I have access to a good one from a very reliable source. Went ahead and ordered all the Yuki parts. Spend hours searching for a 9315 or 93150 bracelet yesterday and found nothing outside of crazy overpriced gens, but I think I got lucky this morning and have located one through a friend. So this project is moving forward.... I think I am going to order a cartel version to work on while this one is being built. Be a good learning experience and I like doing case mods.

Night watch, did you work on that case? Profile and cg's look good. I may grab one of these to work on. Sent from my droptop using telepathy.

Very nice dbane. What movement did you use? Automatico brought up a good point about the movement. I did do some research that is really outside my knowledge base at this point regarding crown position, cannon pinion height and so on...Maybe I got my numbers mixed up but I though most of the builds I saw used a 2824, but would a 2783 work better?
