Hi all, I have come to the conclusion that it may take a while for me to find the "perfect" gen 5513 with gilt dial. I am generally not the most patient guy when it comes to watches but on this piece I have to be. So in the mean time, I thought I would find a decent rep to sport while the hunt continues. I looked at OTB cartel versions and really do not care for any of them. You rarely see any frankens for sale and I have been looking on all the forums for months. So now I am looking to build one. As stated not the most patient guy so do not want to wait for a used Phong or MBW case set to appear and then source all the other parts. This will be a moderate budget build. Here is where I am at and I am looking for some thoughts about this course of action. I like dealing with Yuki as the comms, service and shipping are good. He has about everything I need outside of a movement. Looking at doing a Yuki 5513 build to resemble a 1966 model: Yuki Parts: custom serial numbered case set, eta white lume meters first dial and eta hands, eta movement adaptor, 7206 rivet bracelet, gen eta 2824. Still waiting to hear if he has a crown that will work. Basically I can get everything I need from one source and be ready for case mods and assembly. Cost is roughly $1600 with case mods and assembly labor included. What I really do not know is if I can live with the insert, crystal and so on. If I end up needing to replace items with genuine parts anyways this may not be the best course. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

Awesome. This looks great. You should work for Rolex/Tudor design:)

Yes Sir, exactly like that one. Very cool pictures and the whole detailed process. Sent from my droptop using telepathy.

I know right, except my parents would have been in junior high. One thing I do know is that I want a gilt model even more now. I have looked at a bunch of gilt dials today and they are all just a little different. How did I miss that all these years. No understanding of the process to make such a unique thing. It's like seeing things in a different light. I always liked gilt dials but never really paid close attention to the subtle nuances. I know we are talking about time pieces here (material objects) nevertheless this little post and discussion was somewhat of an epiphany for me... Sent from my droptop using telepathy.

Yes birth year piece:). I always bought new gens and never really looked much at vintage pieces until I found this place. I think I was always afraid of getting burnt due to my lack of knowledge. Now I am obsessed with the vintage pieces. Reading/studying and shopping all the time. When I was doing some research on gilt dials I ran across a thread about the creation of the MKII dials with pictures of the process. Very cool read and very impressive outcome. I have looked on most of the gen forums but have not posted up wtb yet. I didn't realize it would be this difficult to find a piece, but I guess I am looking for a pretty specific 48 year old watch... Sent from my droptop using telepathy.

I have 2 winders from ace timer. A 4 and an 8. The 4 is at least 10 years old and still works well. The 8 I bought after joining here.....and I really like it. It has adjustable speed settings for each wheel. Good service also. One of the motors started making a little noise and they sent me 2 motors at no charge. Sent from my droptop using telepathy.

Very interesting I am glad I asked. It did look like the black was above the text so that made me think it was done in the gilt fashion, but I just have not seen any that looked this white. Probably more likely, I have seen others like this but just did not recognize that they were indeed gilt. The seller has good feedback and everything else looked correct on the piece, so that is what confused me. This piece is not the year I am after though so the hunt continues. If anyone runs across a nice 1966 5513 please let know. Thanks guys very helpful.

Hi all, I am still learning here and this confused me. I am shopping for a genuine 1966 5513 gilt dial and ran across this. Am I missing something here. Says this is a "rare gilt" dial http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Rare-Rolex-Steel-Submariner-5512-Glossy-Gilt-Dial-with-Box-Papers-1961-/191294623400?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item2c8a0c4ea8 This looks black and white to me? I was under the impression that gilt generally referred to gold tone and on these vintage (66 and earlier) Rolex gilt dials it meant that the black lacquer is placed on top of the plate in a way that allows the gold color of plate to show as the text. I know a simple description for a very complicated process, but you get what I mean. I found several discussions across many forums about this and this was the consensus. Is this an incorrect description? Or am I just that uninformed? Thanks

Thanks for all the feedback. The deal is done. I needed someone to trust me on my first purchase; although if I remember it was from BK so had to set up a special account to pay him....then the second piece I paid with some crazy bank transfer with enormous fees I guess I am just a kind and trusting soul. At then end of the day I just want to share this hobby with others. The buyer had bought a piece from an established member who vouched for him. And we had some comms over PM, so all good. At this point one of two things will happen...I am confident it will be OK and I can give him some feedback. It just shows to some degree how important feedback is here. I always hound people to leave feedback, especially on my first few pieces. Thanks again

OK I received the end pieces for my DD and they work great. No mods needed. Not totally optimal as they sit just a touch low, but IMO makes the piece look much cleaner on the strap. Thanks to Stone P for the idea. George is great to buy from, quick comms and shipping. Pic:

Thanks guys. Appreciate it. Kinda where I was at. Was thinking PP gift but I see that can still be a risk. It's a $700 piece so not the end of the world either way. I will slow it down a bit and it will work itself out. What an awesome community. Always nice to be able to get other views from people you trust. Thanks again. Sent from my droptop using telepathy.

Hi All, Selling some pieces--this is not a sales post or any type of marketing.... Getting inquiries from very new members with no or minimal posts and no feedback. Little concerned doing PP with someone with no feedback or posts, but also understand that I had no posts or feedback when I started and needed someone to deal with me. No disrespect meant here, just seen some posts of PP disputes being filed and funds not delivered on pieces that were shipped as promised. Am I paranoid and/or does anyone have a good solution for this situation?

I shouldn't respond to the trolling, but I will anyways. Actually they are all "real" watches in that they all keep time. Many of the members here do have or have had genuine watches. Calling the time pieces many of our members have "cheap fakes" is quite an insult. All you need to do is look at some of the stunning pieces that have been built by the members. For some it it not about owning a "Rolex" but it's a passion for watch collecting, studying the history, and sharing that passion and knowledge with others. Part of sharing that knowledge is to encourage others to take the time to do some of their own studying... Try to wrap your head around having 12 instead of 1. I am a good example of this. I have collected Rolexes since the 80's but usually only had 1 at a time. I have had many genuine Rolexes over the years but really did not know that much about the history or intricate details of them. This forum has opened my eyes to the real world of watch collecting. Doing my first Franken build was far more satisfying than any gen purchase I have made. So instead of 1 or 2 gen pieces I am collecting all the models I like. Not to say I won't buy another gen, I am currently shopping for a 1966 5513, but not to replace my reps to add to them. Sent from my droptop using telepathy.
