  1. Hey guys and gals, I am always seeing these killer wrist shots from members and always asking myself how do they do it? I usually just put my camera into super macro mode, put the camera on a flat surface and point and shoot but always get mediocre results...Are there any tips or tricks or techniques to taking a quality wrist shot?

    Hey UB7. :)

You've received great advice already, but I'd like to ask what camera you use? I checked the Properties for EXIF data, but nothing.

I mentioned in a recent Wristcheck that my Sony Cybershot camera does all the work for me. Here is a review of the model I have, which has image stabilising, and a Carl Zeiss zoom lens:

    http://www.416-1100.com/gallery/1074988

And here is a shot taken with that camera:

    64958996-M-1.jpg

Did he use fancy techniques? No.

"The "bee on the flowers" image (DSC00041) was taken with the camera set to "Magnifying Glass" mode, which permits auto-focusing as close as 1.0 centimeter; For this image I was approximately 2cm from the bee. This camera is one of the best I have tested in the last 6 years."

    Did he use Photoshop? No.

"These images have been captured with SONY's DSC-T9 camera, with no out-of-camera post image processing other than cropping, and no Photoshop work whatsoever. The Camera's internal settings generally are: Program mode with Sharpness and Saturation both turned up one tick for images to DSC00043; For images DSC00044 and over, the Saturation remains up one tick, the sharpness setting was set back to Normal, and all other settings in the camera are set to Automatic."

    Not even a tripod.

Neither do I. Although I do play with the settings, this camera is very forgiving. As you can see, the macro is SUPERB. You point, shoot, and upload on RWG.

So that's in a nutshell my suggestion to you -- it might be you, but more than likely, it's your camera's limitations which prevent better shots.

(Love that shot of the horses and the PAM, though...)

  2. did someone ask about the lume quality ????

    I forgot. :(

But I did ask if the second batch could have a better, thicker crown. Andrew was non-comittal but he's aware of it now. (It's up to the maker, anyway).

I'm also VERY excited. Hope I nab one since the pics Bazonkers posted are GORGEOUS.

EDIT: I know this is just a dream, but personally, I would pay $100 more for a random serial number.

  3. You could come up here to Seattle... the "we're never gonna stall" housing market has finally stalled, leveling off, but not really dropping prices. Kind of a "nobody's market." So, you can pick up a $500K house for $500K instead of $600K because half the town is trying out all the incorrect ways to invest in property..

That's exactly the case with South Florida. The home prices are STILL high, but at least they are not getting higher. The houses just sit on the market longer at the same ridiculous price (a nice house is around $750k which would've been $250k in the early 90s).

A lot of Miamians, who are transplants from other States already, are headed in droves to North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. You can get mini-mansions in parts of NC for $125k (!). A friend of mine who just moved to bufu nowheresville North Carolina has a 2 storey home, on 2 acres of property which would've been possibly a million dollars in Miami. Amazing.

I only say this, Phaedo, because North Carolina is a nice State, overall. They have a stable economy, as you can see, reasonable housing, and it's got scenery to die for, which as a Kiwi you would appreciate. If you can't do Florida, give North Carolina a look-see. :)

Oh and Seattle is fantastic, I agree, POTR. It's so CLEAN. But the rain, the rain...

@POTR: Ah good to know. I hate sprinkles, however, but hey. ;)

  4. That's an awesome glamorous wristy, Vic ;)

Why thank you, Scoobs! I like how that shot turned out, and the HBB wristie, but that Harmony remote one was awkward. ;)

Scoobs, I was going to PM you to ask if your wonderful 3717 has an upgraded datewheel, but my Inbox is at 100%.

I'm thinking of buying a 3717 (not for me), but it would be my first mod if I do.

@Scoobs in the next page: Wow! It looks mighty fine without any mods (not even AR?? Looks good). Maybe I don't need to mod the Big Pilot, if I buy it...thanks for the info. :tu:

  5. If the dial is at least somewhat faithful to the original, it will indeed be like printing money, these may very well fly off the shelves!

Oh this reminds me. Andrew said the dial had a gloss to it. Not sure if that means it's AS glossy as the DSN 082, or what, but at least it's not as matte as the photo.

And BZ, was told there were only 5 made. Sniff. :(

  6. Nothing suspicious. PM me if you have any concerns.

Fair enough. Let's just say that asking for the price of a gen watch AT A GEN FORUM, after having bought the rep watch is not a wisest thing to do. If someone here wished you badly, they could've "outted" you as a member of this forum, and pointed their members to this thread. You can imagine their conclusions...

Trust me. I know how people are when they wish to make mischief.

  7. -Knock wood! I haven't had that happen yet. Did they sell it to someone else or was it lost?

Lost, I believe. Which would be my first ever package completely lost. There was one package which was mislabeled, presumed lost, but got back to me.

82 out of 83 watches...not bad a record, but it still sucks. -_-

-That's right!!! I recall you saying that you wouldn't wear a Speedy.

    Yeah, it's a guy's tool watch extraordinaire. I also don't wear a Sub. :)

    @TMG: Yay! Buzz! Great avatar.

  8. Ouch, sorry to hear that Vic!

Thanks, TMG. The member offered a refund, but I'd rather have the watch! Has that ever happened to you?

Since you're mlle strap I see a Speedy on your wrist with a Zulu strap like this one vs a bracelet.

    DSCN3945.jpg

Ahh, small clarification. I'm a NASA-addict, and loove the Speedy, but it's for my dad. :)

  9. Getting a job permit here today is not as easy as yesterday (before 9/11)!

That's for sure. I came just before that so the ground rules are different.

For one thing, your new employer has to prove that he can't fill that position using local labor!!! #2: You can't work without an SS card.....try and get that and see how hard it is.....specially if it's for employment!

The first part has been the case for 30 years. My father's employer (an University) simply said his research was needed, but it's not so difficult to get around that, believe me.

You can work without an SS card, but it's progressively difficult the higher the ladder you go. If you're a Mexican picking tomatoes, sure. If you're an accountant, no. Since Phaedo is an accountant...

PS......I'm also an immigrant (just lucky to have an Irish/Spanish/American for a Dad, but I did not come from either of these countries).......and I know a lot of them (Legals and illegals!!!), believe me it's not easy, but on the other hand, this is America, everything is possible...........for a price!

Yes, for a price. But there are even pro-bono attorney hotlines here.

    Dade County Legal Aid Society

    123 NW 1st Ave

    Miami, FL 33128

    (Google for Telephone)

But as in reps, gens, and anything, you get what you pay for...

@Phaedo below: Yikes. That is steep. Fortunately, that $325k will get you a bungalow, 3/2 but in a place like Kendall, a nice suburb of Miami. There are still single-room condos available for $250k in Miami Beach, but they are disappearing. Good luck!

  10. Well, all you naysayers on the gen crowns should be feeling pretty silly right now. Relume, Lello datewheel, aftermarket cyclops and a gen crown and life is pretty sweet on this one (assuming the dial is good color and the caseback is fairly accurate). :good:

    Nice.

I just PMed Andrew to see if he can source this from his associate, Joshua. We'll see. If so, I could buy the watch tomorrow. I'm very very excited.

More than the 005, but that's only because of that stupid slant of the OP logo. :(

@Yellomen: Yep, that matte dial colour worries me. But I'm going to email Andrew once he replies, about that. Let's be honest. Neither Andrew nor Joshua have the best photography on their sites. When I bought the FM Crazy Hours I didn't expect much. Fortunately, it's NOTHING compared to how it looks in person.

@Bazonkers: Might wait until you get yours then!

  11. That's all well and good, but how does he get his Green Card?

Once you get a job, you go to the US Consulate/Embassy and apply for a work permit. They'll give you forms to fill out, lots..., and you will have to provide bank statements, that letter of hire from your new employer, references, etc.

A work permit (HB1/L-1) is contingent on you having that job, BUT you can apply for a Green Card later, despite that they say you cannot. My dad did...my ex-Belgian boyfriend's family did (his dad was a professor, which means he was a professional like Phaedo is, so that's relevant).

    http://www.workpermit.com/us/us_h1b.htm

    http://www.workpermit.com/us/us_l1.htm

Get yourself a good immigration attorney once you're in the USA. If Phaedo moves to South Florida, I can very easily recommend him one.

  12. Phaedo, I have lived in more countries than most people even visit in one lifetime. But I did so because my dad moved around from grant to grant. So I know from that experience, that FIRST you get the job, THEN you start the move to another country.

Good Point in your Favour: Emigrating at the age of 30 is perfect. It's young enough for an employer, but not so young as to be a risk.

I'm with Jfreeman here. Come to Florida.

If you move to Jacksonville, you can even get some change of season, if you're used to that. If you move to Orlando, it's got money pouring out everywhere (one of the hottest cities in the USA, for growth, for a while). If you move to South Florida, pick your poison -- it's all good, lots of sun, lots of money, lots of great attractions.

But as I said, get the job first.

The downside to this area, if you can call it that, is that property prices are THROUGH THE ROOF. A decent home starts at $375k. But I fancy that doesn't apply to you, and you would want a long let in a condo or sharing a home with some U of Miami co-eds (for example), instead. But other than that, South Florida (how we call Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and the Palm Beaches) is my suggestion for you.

In 1998, when I was 23, I emigrated to the USA from the UK. It was the best decision of my life.

Changing cultural realities isn't easy, but since you used to live in America, you're half-way home. And Miami makes it easier on the foreigner. There are so many of us here it's like a mini-New York.

    Good luck. :thumbsupsmileyanim:

    OH!

This is what you will have to look forward to, if you do move:

...there's a reason Ponce de Leon was searching for the fountain of youth in Florida.

  13. Well, it's 11:16 PM EST, and not all votes are in. But it's close enough.

RESULTS SO FAR: (My predictions in parentheses)

    Mike Huckabee 34% (33%)

    Mitt Romney 25% (26%)

    Fred Thompson 13% (13%)

    John McCain 13% (10%)

    Ron Paul 10% (-)

    Rudy Giuliani 4% (5%)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa_Republic...aucuses%2C_2008

Not too bad at all. :p

I got the order right, and the level of margin of win almost identical. I was surprised by the Paulians, though.

But I really screwed the pooch in the Democratic side.

RESULTS SO FAR: (My predictions in parentheses)

    Barack Obama 38% (31%)

    John Edwards 30% (28%)

    Hillary Clinton 29% (22%)

    Bill Richardson 2% (12%)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa_Democrat...aucuses%2C_2008

Yipes, big underpredicting for Barack on my part, though like CT I knew he was going to win.

The only thing I can say is that the percentage difference I got right, between Sens. Obama and Clinton -- 9% difference exactly. It was just a lot tighter, and Richardson really failed to put up any fight. I didn't expect that.

As I turn off the computer, to those of you who live outside the US, and don't understand what a caucus is, or what these results mean, it's just this:

People want change. It's not about a charismatic black man, or a preacherman outsider. It's about a vision of America.

And a rather cold lady and a national hero with character flaws, who are both probably the best qualified to actually BECOME President of the USA, just didn't cut it tonight.

It's going to be an interesting year. Good night. :)

  14. I'm quite sure that some members do get slightly discounted prices, but it wouldn't be gentlemanly to discuss it.

I at first thought that's what Predfan was asking, too.

But isn't he saying something like a forum discount? Andrew has a Repgeek discount (a Chopard Mille Miglia, I believe). I'm sure other dealers do too.

Since neither Andrew nor Joshua, e.g., place the RWG icon on their list of sites which recommend/endorse them, perhaps there are some administrative guidelines that prevent that for RWG?

If the question really is about individual discounts, I think that's about a person's chemistry and amount of purchases with a given a collector.

@Pugwash below: Three words. Little White Lies. :bleh:

  15. My predictions: Sadly the Huckster will do well with the drunks and yokels and pull off the win, while college students primarily will put Obama over the top for the Dems.

Without sharing the adjectives for the voters, I agree with the results.

Since no one is replying to the thread, let me do a little prediction game. It's 8:40 PM EST. The Caucii (heh) are almost over, I think. This is what I think the end result will be.

    REPUBLICANS

    Huckabee - 33%

    Romney - 26%

    Thompson - 13%

    McCain - 10%

Giuliani - 5% (much lower than expected)

    DEMOCRATS

    Obama - 31%

    Edwards - 28%

    Clinton - 22%

    Richardson - 12%

We'll see. Again, without any exact political analysis, or giving my opinion, I just see that Huckabee is really the Republican Jimmy Carter, as I call him (the outsider that comes out of no where to win big; it's interesting, because he spent nearly nothing compared to Romney and it's the home schooler/Christian Conservatives which made his campaign grow, not his staff).

Senator Clinton was never supposed to have done well in Iowa, but man, when a black candidate, also from Illinois, can win in one of the most whitebread States in the Union, the guy really has a chance.

It's disaffection with the status-quo that we are seeing in largely a state which differs from so many others.
