  1. It means that one is a competent, interesting, engaging and fun girl. God forbid there are more of those in this world! If only, if only.

    Heh.

Unfortunately, men read that and think of the famous "But she's got a great personality" slur, usually meaning she's not pretty.

And men like pretty girls above all else, right? It's their number one criteria in dating, if perhaps not marrying.

  2. All throughout high school and college, I had many "bad-girl" girlfriends that initially loved the respect...but, in the end, couldn't handle the respect...they couldn't understand it. The bad boys seemed to get all the action...and I played that role for years, but never really thought that was right. For years, I've watched society turn into what you described above. No chivalry, no common courtesy...generally a lack of respect on all counts. My parents have been together for 40 some odd years and divorce was never a question. Just like my grandparents. Those days are gone, my friend. Just look at the divorce rate today. As you stated...I fear for my children. I just hope I can teach them what I learned...if possible.

Loved the quote about reaching over to unlock the door. ;)

I just have to say, whenever I read "our generation" "kids today" types of quotes, I am both amused and sad. It's true, but you know, EVERY generation says that about the succeeding ones. Herodotus said that about young Greeks, Pliny said that about young Romans, and so and so and so on.

It's not that it's not true. Clearly after the Counter-Culture of the 1960s, courtesy norms are not the same.

But it's not as bad as all that.

Yes, the divorce rate is up, but that's because there is greater freedom than before to choose how your life partner (and BTW, it's up in the West, but mostly in North America. Americans always had the "fame" in the UK for being many times divorced. I need not mention Mrs. Simpson...).

Yet there are still ladies and gentlemen out there, and they are not scarce. It just depends on what you are looking for.

Back when I used to date, I always found gentlemen. But that's because I like men like that.

If a man likes a bad girl, the mot du jour in this thread, then don't be surprised if they're not ladies. I suppose when men date they are looking for something sexual or the prettiest girl they can find.

That was never my criteria with men. It was intelligence, character, family, and worldliness. Then looks.

Not too many "bad boys" fit those categories.

  3. I definitely recommend it, although you may want to install a program called PEERGUARDIAN if you live in the USA, this will block your IP from being viewed by third parties.

Just about to suggest that too, Corgi!

    hxxp://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/

My boyfriend is extremely savvy in terms of internet downloads and taught me the barebones last year. Utorrent, Peerguardian, and TorrentFinder extension installed on the browser (Firefox).

I used to download British telly programmes frequently, but it's been about a year now that I did so (recently UB7 told me of a Top Gear episode which I would love to see, since it mentions PAMs!). Since I started reviewing films, I receive free screener copies here and there, so it was no longer necessary.

EDIT: As I was composing this, he called, and I told him what I was about to write. He suggested to download Dark Side of The Moon in quadraphonic sound. It's about 3 gigs. :p ...heh, didn't know he liked Pink Floyd.

I am yet to find one virus embedded in a video file. This is just not possible as far as I know.

I am no expert in this, but apparently, one can download virii, but only if you click on a media viewer they ask you to download to watch their particular .rar'ed files.

Also, I heard to stay away from "Denis Stalker" trackers, easily visible in Piratebay.org (the best place to find torrents, I thought, a year ago).

So, to recap, you are VERY safe not to get a virus embedded in a torrented file, but be careful not to click on links to download viewers. Also, "Force Re-check" if you get a .rar corrupt file notice. You have to re-download the missing parts, usually a few kbs worth. Then "Extract Here" using WinRar, and you'll get the .avi or similar to view.

I used Videolan's "VLC" player back in the day. It played literally everything you could throw at it. And to burn it, either NERO or ConvertXtoDVD.

Please check with others, just in case any of this is outdated though, Steelerfan! :)

  4. Bearing that in mind, I have little use for a watch with chrono functions (although I want to get the chrono PAM worn in The Transporter for my movie collection) so would likely not wear one very often anymore. :)

I enjoyed Transporters for the great watch sightings. :p So far, though, we've spoken of subdials and chronos, etc.

    How about the printing?

That can really clutter up a lot of the watches. OTOH, I love me some Pateks, but this is just TOO plain.

  5. This is a very busy dial, but for a very necessary reason. One of my favourite Breitlings..........

    The Navitimer World

    I'll never doubt you again, b16a2! :p

Sometimes, you really DO have to see a watch in person. This Breitling for Bentley is gorgeous, even if it's as busy as all get out.

    Wow! :band1:

    bfbdialfaceqw9.jpg

    bfbwatchzs7.jpg

...yes, I took a wristcheck shot. But oh dear. I look like a prison warden. No can post I'm afraid. It could come back to haunt me.

  6. Come on then Vic wrist shot, its your thread after all!

I already had a PM about this! :p

I will definitely shoot the pics in a sec, guys. It's me mum's birthday, so I'm getting ready for a quick celebration. When I return, pics.

It's the brown-dial Breitling for Bentley. Maybe it's a cheapie, maybe those of you with Breitlings would laugh, but WOW, this marque is macho, testosterone-filled sexiness!

Let's club together and buy Redroom one to wear for his bad girl bird!

  7. Good topic, V.

Thanks, Rima. Nice to see you on today. Happy Thanksigiving to you, your girlfriend and families! :)

I'm strongly considering buying a Chopard Mille Miglia GMT chrono, white dial/black subs but haven't done it yet because sometimes it looks just too busy. Other days I think it's drop dead gorgeous.

    I'm very torn right now.

I demurred in buying the MM, because as you well pointed out once regarding another watch, it's too big for my wrists. Also, I heard that rotor sounds like an old Gypsy Moth aeroplane kicking in. :o

It's a nice watch though, overall.

Rima, guys, you won't believe this, but I JUST THIS MOMENT picked up a package containing a Breitling for Bentley.

Busier than Grand Central Station on Turkey Day, hooboy. So many little dials, and wotsits.

And guess what? I fell in love with it at first sight. Pics later. :p

  8. It's only clutter if it serves no function. So one man's clutter is another man's necessity.

Absolutely true. It also goes to that Importance of Function thread.

Diamonds on a watch, for example, don't serve any function that is meaningful to me.

Right, but that's aesthetic, which is in contrast to the functionality.

My mum loves diamonds in watches, but though I wear them to show you on wristchecks, I don't much care for them myself.

Date wheels and GMT hands, on the other hand, are extremely useful features, more so than numerals on bezels.

    Agreed.

Unless you are a diver or actually use them for timing purposes, I find numbers on bezels to be the an unnecessary piece of busy-ness.

I'm also wondering if pilots use all those "slideruler" functions, shown amazingly above in that Sinn watch.

I realise they don't need to keep their eyes on the road, like automobile drivers, but man...

I just checked my collection, and mine is split between 5 chronos and 7 non-chronos.

    I'm not big into chronos.

I have two gens which have them, and I never use them. For my reps...well, with such a large collection, I'm sure I'll get the number wrong, but I must have about 5 too.

If I had my druthers, I'd choose an atomic clock functionality on my watches without the clutter, though. Unfortunately, I'm not into Casios...

  9. When a member asked why so many people on RWG love the base, PAM 112, my reply was going to be the sleek, elegant lines and simple dial.

But really, I realised I like it because it's uncluttered. It says "Luminor" and "Panerai", e basta.

Certain watches have so many bells & whistles, the GMTs, the date, the day, the chronograph, and ENDLESS little descriptions like "Automatic" that, "Certified" this -- that's it's just too much, really.

Funnily enough, I buy the watches just the same. And some actually would look odd if they didn't have all these words on the dials, possibly because I expect them.

But do you like "busy" dial watches? What is the most cluttered watch out there?

  10. I like the idea of a Carerra, but how many SS/black watches can one justify?

    Nah.

Maybe a VC overseas or a Cartier Seatimer w/AR? Maybe a solid gold watch ala the St Expury? Or the gold Timewalker?

Something tells me you wouldn't like either. I see you tend to stay with the same marques, and you have a definite theme going on (that's not a slam! Good deal).

VCO white is delicious, but it's formal. Will you use it overmuch to justify its purchase? You seem to love sporty watches, which of course, can be dressed up easily. But they are not,

  11. I'd kill to get 93 for $3.30 a gallon...I paid $3.75 the other day while filling up the Z8...and the way I drive that car, I can watch the needle drop :(. The 750 cost almost 80 bucks to fill up the other day. When I get my M6 back, I'm going to go back to my original plan of buying Methanol in 55 gallon drums and running full time Meth injection on a race map, instead of mixing race gas for race map days.

I'm truly surprised. I had always heard Miami was amongst the priciest US cities for gas/petrol.

So far, U$3.30 per gallon for premium (which my car SHOULD really use, but I cheat, bad) is about what I see down here.

BTW, my TF advisor long ago invested in blue chip stocks for me. Oil companies being big amongst them, obviously. I don't know what kinds of dividends I shall see at the end of year, but you can bet I'll be paying huge capital gains taxes when I sell them too. So it's not all good, when you invest in oil...

  12. High budget more classy:

Zegna Dark blue wool/silk milano two button suit and IWC Portugese Chrono(cream or dark blue dial) B)

    Low budget:

Cerruti black wool three button with Seadweller/Sub or white gold/ss DJ with jubilee band and cream dial

D&G black wool two button with Panerai Daylight black dial, thick calf dark brown strap or ss HBB.

OMG! Totally two thumbs up to what Iceberg said, Llsteve80. There's a person who knows what's what.

I think we had this conversation on the shoutbox, so you know my suggestion. ;)

(Not the two-tone, not the two-tone, not the two-tone)

  13. I have never seen anything like that and I do wonder what it might have been. Any ideas?

    :g:

Sounds like this German watch, minus the tourby:

  14. I am 6'4 and quite lankey.....i am worried that the UPO will look too big and clumpy....perhaps get the 42mm (Non Ultimate) version? i dont really like a watch too look too big and obvious (as i am sure it would on my wrist!). i know it would be just as unlikely for people to believe i have one of these also...but i can get over that.

Welcome to the board, dudeman, from a fellow Brit.

Don't be worried about your uPO not fitting. Here is my 42mm Planet Ocean on my slim 5.7" wrist.

Please note that it wears smaller with an orange strap:

  15. No I don't mean bad-girl like beating up a biker-gang and arson bad-girl.

I mean she's dresses with a little more style and edge than the typical girl, asserts herself, and stays out a bit later than most.

She's a city-girl, born and grew up in Central London, she's traveled the world , is well-read and has fantastic somewhat tom-boyish taste (not in watches but in everything else).

I guess "bad-girl" is the wrong word...It's more that I like girls that have strong opinions, listen to mine, can talk about abstract subjects, are fun to debate with and don't just want a successful "husband in a box" whom they don't even get to know so that they can quit their job and start raising babies.

You just described me EXACTLY. And I'm a good girl.

Who knew that to some men being outspoken, being intelligent and being well-read meant being a bad girl. Fascinating.

Anyways, yeah we'll see how it goes. Not much I can do, and in either case I will probably be better off not thinking about it anymore. Since more analysis at this point isn't going to help.

    Quite so.

However, I will amend my original advice to you, since I perceive you to be sincere in your post. There is an old saying about men that is absolutely 100% God's own take it to the bank truth:

"Faint heart never won fair lady"

    Good luck, Redroom. Sincerely.

  16. On such a special occasion as your wedding, please, no sports watches. It ruins the elegance of a tuxedo.

It's time (no pun) to dress up, and your watch should be something sleek & elegant, and understatedly luxurious.

My suggestion - Cartier, Patek, some of the JLCs.

No one can improve on this suggestion. Its logic and examples are flawless.

In case you like bigger watches than usual as a Big Pilot would suggest (you just can't wear that to your wedding...), though, how about an Audemars Piguet RO Auto, ETA, e.g.:

    AP0014D.JPG

Congrats to you and your fiance.

    Mazel tov!

  17. Redroom, on the off-chance you are being serious, I can't believe you would seriously think any woman would think 'you're gay' or not 'hard' (I love double entendres) because you didn't pounce on her like a gorilla. Do men really think like this? (Ay, please). I read this thread with incredulity, because it's fly-on-the-wall time for me. :jerry:

So you like bad girls, and you fear you've crossed into "Best Friend" territory because she laid it on a plate, and you didn't perform (ay, please).

From what I gather you like this type of bad girl, and you have had problems in the past along these lines.

First, I have no idea what your idea of bad girl is. Does that mean she's into tattoos, drinks, swears like a sailor, likes a bit of rumpus, and will fight any girl who disses her at the drop of a hat? I love her already!

Second, why do you like bad girls if you know you're not their type?

Bad girls (that is, my own idea of what a bad girl is) tend to use men like you and discard them like babies dummies. Why would you in a million years want to put yourself through that pain? Unless you subconsciously want that.

I wish I could tell you, "I can't wait for the followup" but I really can wait. For your sake.

Again, on the off-chance you were being serious, good luck. Seems like you'll either walk away satiated, or with a black eye.

  18. My home town is the architect of the modern world as we know it. Oh yes, the cradle of the industrial revolution, the birthplace of the atomic age and the first working computer and the first trades union. Not to mention the music! Anyone care to guess?

    Surbiton!

    :p

  19. Here's a global chart of fuel costs, all keyed to the same unit:

    http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/global_gasprices/

    Thanks for the link!

However, I see one very definite problem with these conversions. For example, in the case of the country I know very well:

    Brazil Brasilia $3.12

Yes, that is true. But that may be the OFFICIAL conversion of the currency, from the Real to U$ Dollar. But Brazilians themselves cannot get that rate of exchange. Instead they get the 'paralelo' rate, which is much higher.

Thus, in real terms, it's about U$5-6 per (US) gallon, as I mentioned in my lengthy reply to llsteve80 once.

And which NPR (National Public Radio) once confirmed, as well.

If this is the case with one country, you can better believe it's the case with others who have a similar "parallel" conversion of their moneys into foreign currency.

  20. Snorting quartz... heh... maybe it should be spread as disinformation so no one suspects the track and control systems embedded in the fossils and swatches...

Nonsense. You won't get far with a Freemason unless you know the secret Masonic handshake.

    And I just happen to!
