Lume Shots *Beware* Photo Over-Exposures Lie!
Toadtorrent replied to Daytona4me's topic in General Discussion
Good point to raise. I've always thought this to be an issue. To get a real comparison, all the lume shots need to be done with similar lighting (or lack of lighting), MANUAL exposure settings being the same for ALL lume shots, and with the SAME ISO/ASA setting. Auto exposure will only screw things up. -
HAH...I was just about to write this...too funny. Yup...when I think Quartz for ladies, I think Cartier...and the Tank immediately comes to mind. Another option is a steel Panthere. Classic...elegant...understated...versatile...

IWC Slevin Aquatimer with some upgrades.
Toadtorrent replied to RWG Technical's topic in The IWC Area
I just came back from the AD and tried on the gen Slevin after checking out these mods, and I have to say, Rob's work is honestly better than what I saw on the gen. The gen lume on the stick markers was not applied as tightly/neatly within the lines as what Rob is doing...amazing. -
Aaaaah...but do you have GOOD reps? Stick around...read, learn and buy more!

Is that the rare Polex made in Gelena Shitinerand?

I saw that...and was tempted...but I think it's too big for me at 46mm. I ended up ordering the SFSO Asian in white dial instea.

I've read of this happening with others in various other threads from some time back (a couple months maybe)...but I can't seem to find them now for some reason. I'm sure you are not alone.

IWC Slevin Aquatimer with some upgrades.

That looks awesome. I do love your Cousteau lume work Rob...smokin'. I'm awaiting my 2006 Cousteau from Jay and saving up my pennies to have you do your magic. I picked the 2006 purely for the potential for a Ziggification vs. the 2007 model. -
I have sent stuff back to China from Canada for repair without problems. You will have to pay for shipping by airmail which will cost probably about US$12-16 which I considered cheaper than taking it to a repair shop here. Andrew will cover the shipping back to you. Contact Andrew from his site: Trusty He'll get back to you quick...likely with an offer to repair it if you send it back to him.

That's why your most amazing collection is like stockpiling for armageddon.

HAH HAH...nice pic...that's the best way to get watches into the US...I hurt sitting just thinking about it...

Getting back to the thread... That's looking like me to be a rip-off...considering for that price (in Euros no less), you could likely get a Single Red Sea Dweller if ever one became available. You could also get the extremely rare non-HEV DRSD for significantly less. Not reading German (nor feeling like online-translating it), I'm not sure what makes this specific one that valuable other than seller lunacy considering: Comex #60 - has an estimated price of US$40,000 - $60,000 Comex Prototype #24 - Estimated US$24,000 - $32,000 and the World Record Comex Janus IV is estimated at US$40,000 - $60,000 and a handful of other Comex's go for US$7,000 - $15,000... Maybe somebody can correct me on this...

Toad's Guide - Pictorial Reference Guide to Rare Vintage Rolex
Toadtorrent replied to Toadtorrent's topic in The Rolex Area
Done! I had been searching for a good pic of a SRSD for quite some time earlier but to daate, still haven't found one. I've included the best I could find. I also updated the post to include a meters first 1680, and a standard DRSD (Submariner 2000). -
Help: Howto dismantel IWC CD caseback plexiglas ?
Toadtorrent replied to ravishingrick's topic in Watch Repair & Upgrade
Hi, Repaustria did this real wood insert mod found here: Repaustria Calypso Mod Apparently he used a tool to generate suction on the crystal and it popped off quite easily with that. It appears to be press-fit...similar to a Swatch or other water resistant watch lacking a screw-on caseback. -
I couldn't tell a fake or rep frm the screen cap. Heck, if Hublot themselves say they can't spot a rep without viewing the movement with a 10x loupe...there's no way I could. Good spot...you have eyes like an eagle and Wrists of Bling.

Toad's Guide - Pictorial Reference Guide to Rare Vintage Rolex
Toadtorrent replied to Toadtorrent's topic in The Rolex Area
After drooling over your keynote pieces for some time (that's bike and DRSD)...I was glad to be able to find some additional reference material. It's too bad they showed just a picture of the open 9 instead of the flat 3's as well. -
Toad's Guide - Pictorial Reference Guide to Rare Vintage Rolex

Thank YOU for all your vintage Rollie stuff. After reading all your posts, and looking at your watchbox pix from the GTG I was hoping you would find this thread. Cheers. -
HAH HAH...I was going to watch the Oscars for JUST that reason. I watch spot whenever possible...too bad when the hands are down, the wrists are at the waist and it often makes it look like I'm ogling their booty. As to driving spouses crazy...when mine spotted I put in my order for the Braun Wristwatch Annual, she just used it as an opportunity to add some more books and take advantage of the free shipping.

Why oh why do we stick our tongues on frozen sign-posts, or pick our noses while driving, or drink Coors-Lite...or... Seriously...I almost did the same mistake...only found the board by accident...and stuck around because of the quality of board members and member activity. My stupid newb questions were answered promptly (thanks Lady V!) an all was well.

In gathering up the courage to start modding, like many, I think of vintage the Rolex as a departure point to what may well be an all consuming hobby. Whether or not some of the existing out-of-the box vintage reps are accurate, I think few can argue (hah hah) that some of the vintage designs are the nicest looking watches out there. We've seen some amazing examples from the mod-masters out there of Franken-rollies, and amazing aging and distressing work using a variety of tools (Scotchbrite pads, Dremels, etc) and household appliances (washers and dryers). Attached below are a collection of reference pictures of fine examples of some of the rarer vintage Rolexes to use as reference and inspiration. ================== THINGS TO NOTE ================== Remembering that these are considered excellent examples of rare watches, what I found interesting is the variance in crown guard shape. In the pictures below you will find thick crown guards, pointy crown guards, non-symmetrically shaped crown guards and everything in between. So, for those who are concerned about the accuracy of their crown guard shaping, with vintage, ANYTHING GOES!!! If anyone says your crown guards are wrong...you just tell them they're just rare and vintage. As well, the GMT 1675 apparently (though not pictured) comes with a display back. So, references that any Rolex with a display back is a fake is not necessarily true. Thanks to Stephane, Nanuk, By-Tor, Repaustria and others for the inspiration behind this post. The pics are all taken from an amazing auction to be held on these actual pieces by Antiquorum, and resized for your viewing pleasure and in case they take the post down after the auction. The text is pretty much taken verbatim from Antiquorum as well...just formatted with the occasional comment. Yup...love it...great watch with a good substantial feel and beautiful bracelet. Lack of AR is accurate for earlier models as well...
