  1. Little misunderstanding here George. They call you the "Jesus of Lakeland" because they'd like to see you crucified. Stop preaching and run................
  2. Good thinking, I think you should also post in the sales thread when you have contacted the seller. When I've sold something I've often had two or three PMs in a fairly limited time. I could in theory take money from all three before anything would be posted in the sales thread and only then the would the sh*t hit the fan by which time it would be too late. Unfortunately it is in the nature of scammers and con artists that they will always be ahead of the game. Nonetheless, any tightening up is going to help.
  3. Fiddly? Nothing could be easier, I'm assuming it has the seconds output to the side, put three dial pads on the movement and then by eye line up the centre hole and the seconds output shaft and stick. Without seconds output, same thing, but put the stem in and line up the centre and the 3 with the stem. I wouldn't glue as you want to be able to remove it without destryong the dial for servicing say. You could also use double sided tape.
  4. Legally he's in the wrong, but he's got nothing to lose but his User ID. Very wrong, but chasing it down would be like flogging a dead horse, totally pointless. You have to feel sorry for someone who, through ignorance, makes a mistake like this though, can you imagine how he felt when he realised..........
  5. I've had a different experience of the stages of rep buying - 1. Was given Dubhai Breitling (cost about £20) by a friend as a joke. Loved it and wore it for months. I'd always been interested in watches but knew nothing about reps. 2. Started to dislike the obvious flaws in the Breitling and went through a period of research leading to membership of this and other forums. 3. Started to buy reps, all varieties. 4. Got interested in mods, repairs, etc, started to buy parts instead of complete reps and put in used ETA movements, etc. 5. Decided that I liked Rolex best, started to work on a couple of Rolex DJs (this was my grail watch), sold off most of my reps as the only thing I wear now is the DJ's in rotation, about three months each. 6. I have not bought a rep for around 18 months and am unlikely to do so except maybe as a base for modding though this is probably unlikely. Starting to cast an eye on other Rolex model gen cases and dials with a view to another Franken. I don't see myself buying gens of these Frankens as I enjoy the sourcing and modding too much and get a real kick out of wearing something I have built and knowing where all the individual bits came from. Maybe this makes me a fraud on a rep forum? I don't know. I also think I am well over my rep addiction.
  6. Ubi, I've had exactly the same thing a couple of times and I too will only now help people I know or members in good standing. It's such a shame as I personally have been on the receiving end of much kindness in this regard (which I always acknowlege) and welcome the opportunity to pass it on. I even had someone who wanted a set of 21J hands, I first asked him to measure to make sure I gave him the right ones, he didn't bother and just asked me to send what I thought was right. I test fitted a set to a DG2813 and posted them off at absolutely no cost to him. Six weeks later I received a PM "Only just got round to this, the seconds hand doesn't fit, can you send me another one". No greeting, no please, no thanks, no sorry for not letting you know it arrived. Needless to say I didn't respond!
  7. Don't forget it also depends how you put your watch down when you're not wearing it, such as overnight. Rolex instructions are as follows - SIMPLE REGULATING If your watch loses or gains a few seconds per day (remember, there are 86,400 seconds in 24 hours), you can correct it without expert aid. The rate of a watch varies slightly depending upon its position. Take it off at night and place it as follows: TO GAIN A FEW SECONDS: Lay your watch flat with the dial uppermost TO LOSE A FEW SECONDS: Lay the watch vertically with the winding-button downwards TO LOSE RATHER MORE SECONDS: Lay the watch vertically with the winding-button uppermost
  8. I think the 1500 is 34mm and therefore would need a different size dial, I would guess the Oyster Date.
  9. Have you looked at the price of these recently Ubi? Over a year ago I was picking up gen DJ cases with bezel, crystal, crown, etc, for $200 or less. Now they are without bezel, usually without crown, for a lot more. That's the acrylic models too, no idea what the later saphire crystal ones would be, they just don't seem to be around. I do agree though, if you can afford the extra, this is the way to go.
  10. Beautiful! I just love the Datejust with the stick dial. Enjoy!!
  11. You just have to get off the fence and take that one little step to atheist and you'll fit in fine
  12. Try this - http://www.auctionstealer.com/home.cfm - and never forget another auction again.
  13. I'm not so sure that Mercedes and Lexus are even equal. The S Class is Mercedes' test bed for new technology that makes its way into lesser models and eventually into the general car population (including Lexus!), from pretensioners for seat belts to radar assisted cruise control, the list is endless. Lexus is not an innovator but a copier, very worthy and in some ways a better product than Mercedes was late 90s/early 2000s but still a "rep" Mercedes. Mercedes as a match for Rolex, I do agree and yes, having lived and worked in "darkest" Africa I can confirm they are well recognised symbols, in fact there is not a dictator or corrupt politician worth his salt anywhere in Africa who will not obtain the biggest and best Merc he can and a fully blinged Rolex while his people starve.
  14. I have a tutorial over on Repgeek if you're a member - http://www.repgeek.com/showthread.php?p=1095713&posted=1#post1095713
  15. I'm told by my mate, who is English and a cricket fan, that the current way to deal with uppity Australians is to mention the World 2020. Means nothing to me, but hopefully it is meaningful to you
  16. That depends what footie team you want to support. Man Utd - stay in London with all the other fans. Man City - move to Manchester indeed
  17. The Queen plays in the English cricket team? Is she a hitter or a ball thrower? Being Scottish I don't follow this somewhat arcane sport.......
  18. London is full of anything but Poms - Australians, Kiwis, Souf Efricans, Nigerians, Chinese, Indians, etc, etc, then there are all the visitors......... It's rumoured the Queen is the last British person left in London but then she's German married to a Greek...........
  19. For those wishing to polish crystals, a wonderfully useful product is Micromesh - http://www.sisweb.com/micromesh/ - apparently originally made for polishing perspex aircraft windows. It is cloth backed so lasts forever and runs from 1500 grit to 12000. I use it for hand finishing guitars sprayed with nitrocellulose lacquer. Taken up to 12000 then finished with Meguiars Swirl Remover, the depth of shine is unbelievable. I use the same technique to remove scratches from acrylic crystals. The link incidentally is only because they have quite a good description of the product but it is fairly widely available if you Google "micro mesh abrasives"
  20. Ah, now you've gone and spoilt my impression of you as a man of taste......
  21. I think Rolex have it pegged right, they go for the traditional market, not cutting edge stuff except in dive watch design which shows constant improvement. The DSSD was a mistake in my opinion, it looks cobbled together, we'll use an old dial blank, just make the rehaut and the bezel a lot wider, ugly in my eyes. At least Rolex don't dress up a pocket watch manual movement with fancy bridges and charge a fortune for it.........................
  22. I totally agree here, I don't own any modern watches. My Franken DJ's for example are dated 1979 and 1984 from the serial numbers on the (gen) cases. It's gotta have an acrylic crystal for me, none of your modern saphire nonsense!
  23. Funny the DSSD is the one Rolex that makes me want to run in the opposite direction. I think it is an abortion in the sight of whoever your Lord is and should have been strangled at birth.
  24. It may all be true, though I doubt it, however it makes no difference whatsoever. And he is sort of ignoring Rolex history. The truth is that the reputation of Rolex is such that people will always buy them, certainly for the forseeable future. Every product has its knockers (even women so I'm told ) who are keen to knock the product on the basis of value and logic. But people do not purchase using logic, if they did we'd all be running around in small Korean cars being they are the best value currently, personally I'll keep my Mercedes thanks, and we'd all drink nothing but water, who could possibly want anything more, water is the most effective way of dealing with thirst which is the reason for drinking! Etc, etc, ad nauseam. I'll stick to my liking for Rolex, though maybe that's because I'm a overweight white man, seen no more than sixteen hours ago coming off the golf course :D Hmmm, maybe he has something..........................
  25. I would suggest filing rather than cutting if the difference is half a turn on the crown. It's easy to take too much off, do a little bit, check it, then do some more if that hasn't worked.
