  1. Sounded like a casual cabin announement, "hmmm, we'll be landing shortly in the Hudson river. Local time is _____. Temperature is about 10 degrees fahrenheit. It's been a pleasure to have you on our flight today." Nice to hear there are still real men alive today. Restored my faith in humanity for a moment. Though just a moment.
  2. No bracelet with that? What a rip ! Hell of a cool watch, though I do not have ample enough forelimbs to not look like a fool (despite appearing beefy enough in my avatar!!!).
  3. The vintage Doxas are truly part of the history of dive watches. It puts them in the pantheon in my book. The newer doxas are, I'm sure, competent divers, but lack the connections that the original doxas had. To put a finer point on it: Doxa is a marketing company that sells watches. Vintage Doxas were purpose built masters of their environment. That said, I do think most Doxas are attractive watches. One thing I do hate about the newer rice bead bracelet is the faux-articulation: each bead is not independent like the vintage bracelets. A stronger design? Probably. Cheap looking? You bet. Good luck with your search Nanuq. Here's the pride of my collection:
  4. Been burning up NYC for the last 15 years on a succession of vintage BMW boxers and Ducati here and there. Currently on a 95 BMW R1100R with 60,000 miles on it (40,000 all mine). Best way to get around NYC if you don't mind the daily-near-death-experience style of riding.
  5. Thanks ST4. DSN's PVD is such a nice flat black, the only way PVD should be, and it goes so well with vintage hides. It's definitely a keeper.
  6. I got this watch a while ago and have worn it quite a bit. It is certainly the watch that the majority of civilians will comment on, especially my more fashion forward friends here in NYC. It's a stunner, no doubt and looks unlike anything else found on a wrist (for the most part). The quality of the watch is top-notch, it winds super smoothly and is exceptionally accurate. Anyway, just wanted to post some photos that I took while thinking about selling it...but decided it is easily one of my favorite watches, gen or rep, and selling it would fill me with remorse. I know DSN has had his ups and downs as a dealer, but I am a satisfied customer. However, I am pretty forgiving when it comes to these watches and I have no idea how accurate this watch is to a genuine model. All I know is that I think it's badass. Strap is homemade from leather I got from my late grandfather's tannery in Haiti. Hard to beat this combo IMHO. The lume is some of the best of any watch I own and it looks so cool when you walk into a darkened room day or night and it starts to glow right away. Thanks to all on RWG for all the great info - couldn't have made the rep leap without you. Best to all.
  7. The usual, go anywhere, do anything replica of the greatest watch of all time (maybe).
  8. Well done on the pop culture, sir. As to the main post - I've always said E.T.A, but have heard many pros say ettah. Go figgah?
  9. Still have most of these and the ones I don't I most assuredly regret selling them. Love the divers... But this guy's irreplaceable:
  10. Gee, LR, we must go to the same Brooklyn P.O....oh wait, they're all like that! (but maybe we do) Anyway, to answer the call of this thread, I was getting Rollies on Canal Street when I was in high school 20 years ago. I would get 'em fogged and just throw 'em in the oven for a little bit to get the moisture out. I think I paid like $20 or $30 for those pieces of sh*t. My first real rep was a Davidsen PVD Panerai: Indeed, the waiting was pregnant with expectation (that it'd disappear before it got to me!) and when the USPS package delivery guy rang my bell, I was very excited. While it hasn't created an avalanche of money poured into reps (I tend to collect gen vintage divers), I did also pick up an MBW 1680 from Mezzanine here on the forum that I am wearing as I type this. Two great ones have me pretty satisfied...though I would love a vintage GMT or Steve McQueen...alas.
  11. Just gorgeous. Your aging techniques yield some fabulous results.
  12. Mine does the same and I am curious if it is like this on any version of the gen. A cursory google search returned minute intervals on most submersible models. I don't particularly mind this though, but it is a bit odd.
  13. I think what you are seeing as a "faux HE valve" is actually a date pusher for this movement. Hence the one-position crown. Nice watch.
  14. Got this sucker from DSN a little while back. It is one of my nicest watches, gen included and has been a great addition to the stable. The best part about the higher end Panerai replicas is that you get all the upside without laying out thousands of dollars. I gotta say, after seeing and learning about these watches here, I'd say you'd have to be a complete idiot to spend thousands on a genuine Panerai or any watch that uses an ETA movement. I've got no problem with a $350 dollar rep that gets not just the look but the feel of quality that a gen would have. After waiting for weeks for straps to show up, I decided to just make my own - which I'm wearing in this wrist shot. Leather straps are great - homemade leather straps are really satisfying to wear (especially when leather came from my late Grandfather who ran a leather tannery). To sum up: DSN PVD 111 worh every penny...so far. (fingers crossed)
  15. Jeez Mezzanine, I was really loving my 1680 you sold me until you started picking the dial apart. I kid, I kid. But I do agree that a better dial would be a nice thing to have for this watch. I'm inferring from another post that a gen dial would have to be filed down a bit to fit? Gen 1680 dials are pretty expensive - probably in the 400 - 1000 dollar range depending on patina and quality (I'm guessing here). My beef with the dial is that the markers look a little plasticky and don't glow at all. I know that it's supposed to be an old watch, but gen 1680 markers are tritium, right? [censored]. Let the modding begin. This hobby is hopeless. I'm going to CVS to by an Ironman.
  16. Hmmmm, maybe my noobness prevented me from discerning between collector and dealer. If my comments weren't appropriate for a "collector", then please excuse my delicious foot. MMMMM, my fooooottttt.
  17. I'm new here, but I gotta say what's the big deal about saying who you got it from? I wanna know and I sure as [censored] think that getting it right the first time is what I'd like in any seller of anything. It's almost as if people think it's OK for it to take three watches to get it right in the rep world, or two trips back across the world (no big deal!!). The reps I'm into are pretty much at $300 and over and I guess I expect them to have CGs attached. Call me crazy, but that's crap service and I wanna know who's doing business this way - personal problems or not. And it doesn't have to be a lynching - just say I got this from so and so and it came like this. He's sorting it out and will post a follow up. Tada! No aspersions cast, just the facts. Might help quality in the long run. These guys are selling as a business, not a favor, right? I know, in some cases, good relationships with dealers HAVE lead to favors and better than expected service, etc..but again, I'm not calling for someone's head, just an even-keeled depiction of the trade up to this point. I've always considered these forums priveledged places to do business - rapt audience, free advertising etc. - so you gotta play ball. Hope you get a complete watch soon.
  18. This is so very sweet. What a looker on that strap. Nice piece
  19. Glued to my wrist since arriving from previous owner (above) mr. mezzanine. That seadweller dial has me wanting to get the dial and hands patina'd a bit. I'm just loving this watch and it's basically gained 1 second since monday. Ridiculous!
  20. Thanks again Mezzanine. You won't be replacing it with this one! In fact this watch is making me consider selling a bunch of my gens based on actual satisfaction derived from a watch. Once I pressure check this sucker it's buh bye Breitling and others. OK, maybe I'm riding a big puff o' the rep-bong. I'll calm down now.
  21. I just got this watch from Mezzanine here on the member trading board. It is my second rep (PVD Pam 111 review posted earlier) and I couldn't be more thrilled with the watch or dealing with Mezzanine. A true gentleman and a crap photographer - my favorite kind of internet seller! The watch I recieved is stunning and in some bizarre way answers all the questions about why these watches (gens) are so legendary. They just got it right way back when and the proportion and look is just dead classic. The MBW rep captures most of the nuance that makes the vintage models so superior (IMHO). It fits my wrist perfectly and is comfortable in a you-know-its-there-and-like-it sort of way. The dial is the essence of simplicity and the domed crystal is just plain cool looking. The cyclops is a bit overdone, but I like it none-the-less. Maybe I'll have the watch long enough to actually need it. It has a slow beat ETA movement installed that hasn't lost or gained a second to my computer clock since I set it (hack feature, hello!!!) 7 hours ago and the crown screws down perfectly. I just couldn't be more pleased with this watch. Thanks Rob for a painless and highly communicative transaction - couldn't have asked for better. Obligatory wrist shot:
  22. Gorgeous GMT. Just spectacular. I think I'd be hunting for one of these if they had the more robust sub crown. Now, not to be thick here (I am a noob after all) but that's a genuine Rollie, right? Really sweet looking - well done!
