Dizzy
A truly interesting story of a watch with a lot of provenance and history. Interesting insight into some aspects of Rolex too. Really good read if you havent seen it before. Rolex Story

Nanuq
That reminds me -- A LOT -- of the story behind my 1665.
freddy333
Definitely, a classic, in more ways than 1. It is unfortunate, however, that nearly all of the original watch had been replaced (by Rolex) as it no longer matches the original 6538 spec. I expect that is why Rolex was unable to authenticate it during the initial inspection. As an example, the original 1030 balance cock has been replaced with a later 1066 cock & it looks like some other movement components may have been replaced with later parts as well. Still, quite an exceptional story with a rock solid provenance.
Nanuq
I'm looking at that bezel and wondering why it isn't worn away at the tips. It looks just like the batch of bezels that recently flooded Ebay.

freddy333
For whatever it is worth, according to the (translated) letters, the bezel has been replaced at least twice (the dial, at least once).

Great to see the ageing and pitting to the case.

_brian_
I might be wrong, but the fotos after the sentence "The young guy was happy and enjoyed scuba-diving with his freshly aquired watch….", i.e. the 7th, 8th and 9th picture, seem to be manipulated. Just look at the watch on the 8th pic...

I assume you mean this pic I am certainly not a photographic expert, but it looks fine to me.

If you look at the foto before that with no zoom, the watch - color of the metal - seems to be strange. To be honest the whole story seems to be strange for me, but maybe I have been just looking at reps too often lately...
