Pray for the people of far North Queensland

Some where around 10pm tonight (AEST) cyclone Yasi will hit the coast of Nth Qld.

This cyclone has already been described as the worse storm in recent generations, the Premier of the state (Anna Bligh) has told the people "Do not pack bags, just grab each other and get out of there!"

Yasi is a cat 5 storm, the same force as the storm that wreaked havoc in New Orleans a few years ago, thankfully, however, it will hit an area that is not densely populated, but it does have a 500km storm front so will take in many towns.

Yasi already has winds of 295km per hour and that is expected to increase.

All this of course is straight on top of their recent floods they have endured.

No Red,

A bit too far south for this to do much more than wet their lawn, and blow a few leaves off the trees.

This one has a 500km front, from north of Cairns down to Mackay.

Its about another 1000kms from there to Brisbane.

We have some breeze here now, and its hugely oppressive, hot and humid. We will get some "hot" rain tonite...no cooling showers, and I expect a bit of wind tomorrow as we get the tail of this thing.

But those up north are in for a pounding tonite, and the thing is so strong, they are expecting it will not dissipate once it crosses the coast.

News reports are saying it will still be Cat 3 250 -300 kms inland.

Also talk of massive wind/tidal surge...up to 4mtrs!

After the floods, this state doesn't need this right now.

Just gotta get on with things I guess....glad I'm not in the insurance business. :)

I'll be praying from down south in Melbourne. For those in the eye of the storm, make it out alive. Everything else is replaceable. My sincerest good luck and good karma are with you all. Let's hope it's less than predicted.

I went through hurricane Andrew In south Fl back In 1992. Most people I knew did not take It seriously because It had been many many years sence a huge hurricane had hit the area. Complete devastation, the eye of the storm missed us by 50 mi,tress were uprooted In my backyard. A few days later I drove to homestead Fl,the hardest hit, communitys were removed from the face of the earth. It Is something I had never seen before and pray I never see again. My prayers go out to the people of North Queensland.

Thoughts and prayers go out to all in the designated storm path!

@Ken: Katrina was not a Category 5 hurricane by the time it hit New Orleans. In fact, it was barely a Category 3. The destruction in New Orleans was not directly caused by the Hurricane at all, but by structural failures in the Levee system. New Orleans (which is below sea level)has seen stronger and bigger storms and come out of them with no problems. The destruction was caused mainly by flooding.. not by hurricane force winds, this coupled with RIDICULOUS response time by the U.S. government was really the cause of most of the deaths that occured during katrina. Death from, dehydration, heat exhaustion, bacterial infection and drownings were the main causes of most deaths..

I felt inclined to add that bit, as I have a lot of family that was affected in New Orleans by the storm.

There is now talk of a 12m storm surge.

That is seriously scary!

No kidding! You know what this means? CHECK THOSE CASEBACK SEALS, LADS!!

Seriously, my prayers are with you. First and foremost, get your families safe, make sure everyone understands an emergency plan in case communications go down for an extended period, agree on a meeting place where you can all find each other if separated, and carry your emergency supplies at all times.

Be safe, go slow, one step at a time. Plan your moves. You'll be okay.

That is seriously scary!

Especially knowing all the low lying land in that area.

They would end up with thousands of acres underwater.

We can only hope things improve.

Wow the timing couldn't be worse after what they just went through a few weeks ago. Prayers going out to all those in NE Australia. Here's hoping some miracle happens and that monster subsides before it causes too much damage

Man....that premier lady should be telling the townsfolk where to go. Forget about prayers, just keep moving and don't look back.

Keep us posted.

Unfortunately most folks wont leave there homes. I know It dosent makes sense to risk your life or your families life but this remains a fact. Most peoples homes are everything to them, they feel that they can somehow protect there properity. Again, I know It makes no sense when you consider ones life compared to ones home, but for many people there homes/properity are there life.
