Drink of the day.

Hey guys,

this topic refers to all who would like to post what drink, alcoholic or not, they enjoy the most, in which occasion and how it is made. Maybe you might have a little anecdote how you got to this drink, or about it's history?

Or are you enjoying something special this very moment?

I'd like to start with a real classic, the Bloody Mary.

Not that it would be my very favourite drink, but it is famous around the globe and the best medicine against a bad hangover (at least in my opinion).

Here is an excerpt from a letter sent by Sir Ernest Hemingway to Bernard Peyton from the 5th of April 1947, which I found in one of my many Barbooks:

"Dear Bernie,

to mix a pitcher Bloody Mary (any other extent is useless), you have to take a really large pitcher and fill it with a single big chunk of ice (we don't want it to melt too early and dilute our product).

Mix half-litre of good russian vodka with the same amount of cooled tomato juice. Add one spoon Worcestershire sauce, Lea and Perrins is common, but you may use AI or any other good beefstak sauce. StiRR [with txo RR]. Then pour a shot fresh lemon juice in it. StiRR. Now it still needs a small pinch of celery-salt, cayenne pepper, black pepper. Repeat stirring and tasting. If it is too strong for your taste, feel free to add more tomato juice...

I have established this drink 1941 in Hong Kong and believe me, it has precipitated the ruin of this Crown Colony more than any other circumstance, except maybe the japanese army. When desired, you can mix it in a way as if there was no alcohol at all in it. One tumbler gives you the kick of a real nice and large Martini... There is a Vodkabrand located in New Jersey producing in russian tradition which is ok. Unfortunately I forgot the name..."

Hemingway goes on recommending "a tasting mexican sauce called Esta si Pican [some sort of mild Tabasco], which goes very well with a Bloody Mary. A few drops are all it needs."

Please excuse the poor english, I had to re-translate it from german.

Nice topic!

For me it depends upon the weather/mood I'm in.

In general, I really enjoy a fine tequila side by side with a fresh glass of sangrita.

Or a fine Whiskey with soda water...

When things are hot, I sip on an ice-cold Michelada, which is kind of a Mexican variation of the Bloody Mary.

salt the rim of a 20oz glass with course salt

fill glass with ice and juice from 2 key limes

2 dashes of Maggi Seasoning

2 dashes of Worcestershire sauce

2 dashes of Tabasco

dash of pepper

fill half the glass with Clamato juice

fill the rest with beer (pour slowly, the salt makes the beer foam)

Note, this is how I make it - and this is the best way to make one.

There are many variations. You can use Tomato juice or V8 instead of Clamato (but you're cheating yourself of the slight briny salty flavor that is ohh so important in a Michelada). Instead of Maggi seasoning, you can add 1 dash of Soy Sauce. Instead of Tabasco, you can use whatever Salsita you want. You can also add a shot of Tequila to the recipe, but use a Tequila Blanco and not a gold-colored tequila so as to not overpower the delicate flavors.

My 1st cocktail of choice; a sidecar. If the bartender gives you a puzzled look after orderig one I say nevermind and order a Kettle One with a twist of lemon and tell them to say the word Vermouth when shaking it.

The perfect sidecar:

2oz of brandy or cognac, it's a mixed drink -don't waste the good stuff on this

1oz of triple sec or cointreau

1oz of sweet & sour mix

add squeeze of lemon

shake and strain into a cocktail glass with sugar on the rim

float a slice of orange on the top

-add a spash of simple syrup or more sweet & sour to taste for those that find it too potent

Poker night with the guys; I'm pretty happy with a glass of Oban with an ice water on the side.

Anytime drink; black coffee.

ketel one on the rocks. or ketel one gimlet but only if its fresh lime juice, not roses.

also enjoy hangar 1, level, triple 8 vodka from nantuckett mass. or for the special occasion vermont spirits gold vodka. here is some info on it.

Vermont Spirits Gold is pure, delicate, unflavored vodka handmade in small batches from the sugar of maple sap. It is triple distilled and lightly filtered to allow the distinctive quality of the maple fermentation to come through. That quality combines a fragrant nose with smoothness in the mouth and a slight burn that delights the true lover of a vodka with character.

nice thread. has made me thristy....

Lately I've been on a Cab & Cognac kick...

Was down in the Napa Valley a few weeks back and bought a couple of cases of Franciscan Cabernet...

Surprisingly good taste for a $20.00 bottle of wine...

So...

Wine before and during dinner...

And...

Remi Martin XO after...

A nice change from my standard Goose & Cran with a twist of lime...

Double T

Hawaiian Martini

In a LARGE container mix the following:

1 very sweet fresh Pineapple cut into pieces

1 Liter of Skyy Vodka

1/2 Liter of Vanilla Vodka (Smirnoff)

1/2 Liter of Malibu Rum

1 cup simple syrup (more or less depending on the sweetness of the pineapple)

Let it sit for a minimum of 5 days. I use a potato masher to mash and stir the pineapple every day.

After the 5th day remove the pineapple. Throw it away as it will make you sick to eat it (they told me this but I didn't listen...I did get sick!).

Put the liquid from above in a martini shaker and shake it till very cold. Serve in a martini glass with pineapple garnish.

My wife doesn't like most martini's...after two of these she is ready for anything!...so I usually ask he if I can buy another watch. ;) Don't laugh I now have over 50 watches.

Good one, a real classic.

Lucius Beebe writes about it in his famous "The Stork Club Barbook" from 1946:

"The Sidecar was invented to the best of my knowledge by Frank, Steward and senior Barman of the famous Ritz Bar Paris, during the golden ages of the 1920's.

In a time when Joe Zelli's, Harry's Bar New York and the gentlemen's bar in the Ritz Cambon-Corner were worlds best-known booze-cathedrals, when every atlantic-liner spit out hundreds of solvent and thirsty Yankees, their pocket full of devalued Francs, Ritz-Barman Frank appeared to be some king of the admired saloon-tender. And he was indeed a pleasurable, generous and sympathetic friend for thousands of americans.

Nothing felt cheap or ordinary in the Ritz Bar Paris and no scall were spoiling the gentlemen's jackets. The list of regular guests was including names like Evander Berry Hall, the later king of Spain, the prince of Wales, Phil Plant, William B. Leeds and russian archdukes living in Parisian exile. The gentlemen's bar in summer was the playground for boys from Harvard, Yale and Princeton, with little democratic yeast from Williams or Dartmouth.

As far as I can remember, did Frank invent the Sidecar around 1923 as a Stinger variation , but with very highclass ingredients. Frank mixed it for VIP's with Ritz Vintage 1865 Cognac - for five US Dollars per glass."

The receipe I know of is very strong, surely not fancy drink:

5cl Cognac (a good one)

3cl Cointreau

2cl Lime juice

There is a cocktail i had made for me once called a Harlem Mugger.I have no idea what was in it but it was very dry and ASTONISHINGLY strong but very pleasant.

If anyone knows the recipe that would be great :)

As far as I know this is some kind of modification of the Long Island Ice Tea, but with Champagne.

Take a large tumbler and put lots of icecubes in it. Then pour

Definitely a classic...However, don't use sour mix, use fresh juice whenever possible. Sub in fresh lemon juice for the sour and add 1/2 oz. simple syrup.

Simple syrup is easy to make...equal parts of sugar and water...that's it!

Sub in the fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and Cointreau and you've nailed it! B)

Wow guys... i almost think some of you are member of Alcoholics Anonimous Forum as well

Well... for me it's more simple... i am crazy about red Burgundy wine so when i come home it's a glass of Pinot Noir with some french chees, diner with more red Burgundy (or other wine depending on what we eat) and a cognac to finish... or a nice single malt. Oh... and sometimes it's a single malt to start with :D

Well have not had a drink all week, so friday night now I am about to pour my second screwdriver.

Long island iced tea of course is a good choice too, but you need the right bartender to make it. Don't know why, but the right one makes all the difference. And I do like the apple martini's - I am comfortable enough in my heterosexuality to admit I like them...
