Want to move to the US in three months, from the UK, can anyone give me some help...?

Dear All,

Whenever i am faced with a question i cannot answer, i always come here, this place is a haven not only for watch info, but pretty much ANY kind of info; which makes this board very unique :)

Some of my closer friends on here will know that four months ago i got engaged, and that my Fiance is American. Now, i have been out here with her and her family now for four weeks and am set to return to the UK next week, i am dreading it!

We have decided to re-locate to the States, Florida to be exact. However, we do not intend to get married until next year, Summer perhaps.

I was wondering if anyone knew the best way that i can get a Visa to stay over here, become a US citizen, etc. ANY way of me being able to stay here long-term, until we get married and i get my green-card.

If anyone can help me out or point me in the right direction OR has had previous experience in this then it would be appreciated!

Just to repeat, our goal is to be back and living in the States within three to four months from now.

AFAIK, but USA may be different but if you have been together for more than 12 months and living together and can prove it with bills in the same name/address etc you can get a defacto visa.

Check it out, but only if youve been together for more than 12 months and living together

However that is only good for 90 days. If you want to stay till next year you will have to go through the process just like everyone else and the fact that you are engaged to a US Citizen won't help out at all until you are married.

In order for you to stay your Fiance is going to have to fill out the forms to petition a temporary visa for you. I am not sure as to the time frame and I am also not sure if you are entitled to stay here while the form is being processed.

Best thing for you to do if you are in the US already is to find an imigration lawyer and let them square you away.

My girlfriend's close friend married someone that was not from the US. I will ask her.

I think you two may have no choice but to consider marriage. You can get legally married now, then have the big to-do grand wedding that all women want when the time is right for her. I'm not exactly sure, I will ask, best I can do.

I am originally from Germany and met my American wife - lets say a long time ago :D she was in the army at that time, so we lived in Germany together already for more then a year when we decided to get married. Since she had a daughter already from a former marriage it would have been an expensive legal nightmare to get married in Germany, so we flew to Vegas, got married and had the license transfered into German for 20 Marks at the time. Got a free vacation out of that for sure..

To come to the point:

But when I applied for my visa to move to the States with her I was surprised to find out that even when you are married to a US citizen they do not have to give you a Visa. I had to find an employer in the states that wrote me a letter guaranteeing employment first. I also had to show I had enough money to start out with, don't remember exactly I think it was $10,000. It was quite a hassle and runaround.

wow, really? i always thought you just had to marry and thats it.

That is what I thought too...

Even now after being here for 15 years I cannot make up my mind to trade my German citizenship for American, a lot of Germans I know here don't do it. Some are here a lot longer then me and still German.

Somehow America always seems to be a little strange or unstable or something and we want to keep the options open I guess.

Even Americans now are getting second passports I heard. :)

But if the government for some reason decides that I should go back, then my marriage still would not protect me, even after all these years and all the taxes I have paid.

As Pugwash mentioned, do factor in that it will be harder to start a career overseas, not easier. Your wife may desire to be supported financially at some point. And babies do appear out of fucking nowhere. Or in bed, all sorts of places really... :D

You have missed some info out. What is your job and are you planning on working in the US? This will be the single most important factor in getting a visa.

Like I said: no jobby - no visa.

Or you could come in through Mexico, I heard you get all kinds of breaks if you do that! B)

No Visa fees, you don't have to get your fingerprints and picture taken for the big database and maybe even wellfare benefits...

1. I can get my Dad to open up a company over here, and have me sent over here to establish it, seeing as what he does is a niche field, not many people can do it, i can get a hb1 visa for over here.

Will this work?

And trust me, babies do not appear out of f*cking nowhere with us, my Fiance has had IUD, a copper thingy inserted that won't allow her to get pregnant for 7 years, or until the docs take it out... wohooooo! No pill! No rubber!

Hmm, if you can get a job in the US that easily, do it. A job is the only way you'll get a visa.

The advice from doctors is, remove the IUD in early pregnancy. ;)

If 100 million people use something that is only 99% effective, that is a surprisingly large number of nappies to change. :p

You'll be working to pay off the pony riding lessons before you know it....

On the visa front there are some excellent forums out there dedicated to just these kinds of questions. I don't think the 2 minute old corporation with a related owner would pass muster - you'll have to establish a track record in some kind of industry, and flash your qualifications. When it's all said and done, it would probably be easier and cheaper to get a real company to try to sponsor your employment. If you're not planning to work, do you really need a work visa? Or alternatively, if she doesn't like the UK, could you not both get working visas to a 3rd country for a bit?
