These people must be afraid of their own shadows.

I bet we might even convert a few of them to the rep side :-) once they see all the goodness and fun we have here, and how our forum design just absolutely destroys their crappy forum design.

Indeed, that is something i noticed as well... The crappy forum design...

Another thing i noticed, as i read many topics of this forum, is the the knowledge of its members can hardly reach ours ... That was something that surprised me when i joined the rep community almost a year ago.

I couldn't sleep after reading that thread...who would buy such fake watches? I mean really... :p

It is amusing how much more knowledge there is on this forum, especially since many folks here have both reps and gens and often reps of their gens, so comparitive knowledge is present, as opposed to uptight gen owners who speak ill of reps not knowing anything about them.

Actually some of the views expressed in the mentioned thread aren't nearly as one-sided, paranoid and hateful as much of the other stuff I have read regarding our hobby. In one posting the poster divides buyers of replica watches into 2 categories:

a. the ones that will never be able to afford the gen

b. those that own the gen but prefer to wear the rep because they are concerned about ruining the gen or having it stolen

I think that there also is a category c: Those people who think that buying a Rolex means that you are spending way too much money on the brand name compared to the real value the watch holds. I do have serious doubts that a Rolex for 3K is actually a much better watch than an Oris. Matter of factly I have talked to a watchsmith whom I consider a friend and he told me that from his point of view the real value of a sub (16610) is not higher than 800 - 1200 EUR. The gens I bought and most prominently the Sinn 756 offer a good countervalue for what you will actually spend for the watch. . And beyond that, when we are talking about the segment 25K and above, no one who doesn't have shitloads of money and is in a sane state of mind would buy such a watch... unless you want to buy it as a (risky ?) investment and are hoping for ROI in some years.

Oddy enough, it was the watchuseek forum that got me in touch with RWG1 years back. They were having an argument on whether a photo someone posted was of a gen or rep and how wrong it was to even start such a thread. One post in the thread read something like "take a look at what these folks think of this thread..." and posted a link to RWG1.

To their credit, it looks like some of their members have a rather balanced view of the topic of rep vs gen. One member posted "When rolex has models pushing $50,000, its obvious that millions of replicas would be created. Rolex is asking for it." I Agree with that to an extent, but apply it to the entire luxury watch industry.

Better for them to see RWG for what it is, a bunch of watch geeks that love talking about timepeices no matter who made them or where they come from and where some reps are truly the best form of flattery and really are works of art.

Cheers B)

What are they afraid of, aren't they the ones that say you can always spot a rep from a mile off?

Don't they say that we're wasting our money on crap that will break in a week?

If it's true, then they have nothing to be afraid of - we're all just wasting our money while they relax in the secure knowledge that they own the real thing!

Of course, the real thing is probably an ETA movement in a steel case, same as what I have, for 20x the price.

But then again, they have factory service at $500 a pop (to start) and all I can do is go out and get a whole new watch for $350.

I am such a loser ;)

I think I'll head over to wannabee.com for another 6.75 Breitling Bentley to ease my pain.

:lol: , nice... I can concur, the last time my GMT was serviced, it cost me about $625!! and I was quoted over $800 for a new stainless bracelet for it (oh, and I had to return the original to Rolex :disgust: ) Needless to say, it will not be going back to a Rolex AD ever again.

Captain America certainly seems to have a rational grasp of the situation. I wouldn't go so far as to think they may be a member here, but, they're certainly at least prepared to think about things from the 'other' perspective :)

Wow..

We have international champions there!

How scary is their level of ignorance...

One could give them fern to be eaten, they would not realize anything...

OK, I'm sorry, ... I know, we're only losers for this beautiful people.

edit: :tease:

i'd be willing to be a hefty sum that captain america is a regular at one of the rep boards -- it is pretty obvious from his posts. not a bad thing though -- he's the only voice of reason in that thread....

deltatahoe

Well, it is even possible that captain America have at least one post in this topic...

Why do people here find it hard to understand how the majority of gen owners feel about reps?

If you spend five or ten grand on a watch of course you are going to be [censored] if you find out other people are walking around with something that can be distinguished only on close inspection by someone who knows what tells to look for. It is a rare bird who is going to just say, "to each his own." Most will feel resentment and will express it by calling you a wannabe or by denigrating the watch itself. It makes perfect sense to me.

It's not a matter of "hard understanding between gen owners & rep onwers" as many peple own both.. A previous post said that if they are affraid that the paid 5K or 10K on something that can be easily replicated with superb quality with less that 500$ , then they are affraid that they may got something that didnt deserved the full amount of money the gave. Remeber, that some of the "historical swiss watch manufacturers" used the same movements form ETA...
