whitestripes Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 I like to charge up the lume on a dive watch, make sure the crown is screwed in, line up the pearl with the minute hand, then hop in the shower... in the dark! That way the watch is in its "natural habitat." I can't believe I do this, but you should try it, it's kind of fun, tracking (shower) time. What's the geekiest WIS thing you do/have done?

Well certainly not this.
jnkay Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 OK, I'll bite. Probably taking longer to decide which watch to wear to work some days than to decide which shirt, slacks and tie. And I guess when I go on a polishing binge.

I gotta say, throw in a couple of chickens and Sarah Palen, and you have a truly one of a kind, perverted WIS experience!
whitestripes Posted September 12, 2008 Author Report Posted September 12, 2008 Part of me regrets revealing this, part of me doesn't. :-)
stilty Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Well, depending on what watch I'm wearing and the lume, I'm prone to sticking it under the lamp while I brush my teeth, so I have a full charge before bed.
dluddy Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Well, depending on what watch I'm wearing and the lume, I'm prone to sticking it under the lamp while I brush my teeth, so I have a full charge before bed. I do the exact same thing
Ztech Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 I'm a lume freak so I lay all my watches under a light and charge up the lume. Then I turn the lights off and just stare at the awsome sight that is lume. I sometimes do this for 30 minutes.
tenacious_b Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 I thought that WIS was a term to indicate an incredible amount of knowledge, not pervy extracurriculars with your watches. j/k I charge my lume up and see how long it takes to fade completely.
tick123 Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 the most WIS thing...probably surfing this site all day that and using one of my seiko's as a weapon in a fight one time...don't ask me how, but regardless, those things are built like a tank!
whitestripes Posted September 12, 2008 Author Report Posted September 12, 2008 Well under the strict definition of WIS I guess it's a large amount of knowledge about watches, but according to a commonly quoted thread on time zone, many of the "signs you're a WIS" have nothing to do with knowledge, but with a love for watches.
tenacious_b Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 yeah yeah, i was just yankin ya. And I also agree with tick123, surfing this forum at all hours of the day, though that may be more a sign of obsessive compulisivity in general, rather than my affinity for watches..
rolex001 Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Here's a good one - trying to calculate which sort of lamp with a certain amount of power gets to activate Luminova best. Not just guessing, but calculating - and then trying it out live. My better half told me to stop acting crazy like that...
b16a2 Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 I sleep on the floor, my Skyland gets the bed Only kidding I must admit I do like to make sure it is clean every now and then, and also make sure I set the time to an electronic source to ensure it is running accurately every week.
southcoast68 Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Using the units per hour scale on a Daytona to see how long it takes for my garden hose to fill a gallon bucket, thereby getting the "gallon per hour" flow rate. I also attribute this behavior to working with engineers all day.
fotoman Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 I sleep on the floor, my Skyland gets the bed Only kidding that is freaking hilarious
ubiquitous Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 For me, the regular daily stuff seems to include... Probably wearing a watch on each wrist to keep them both wound throughout the day. Or wiping off the crystal with a small cloth to keep it dust free... Usually 3 - 10 times within a minute. I've also been known to stand in front of the watch box around midnight to watch the date changing on the watches that have them. My wife's favorite, however is when I'm staring at one of my watches and she asks what time it is, only to hear me reply 'uh, I dunno, let me check'. Usually get a pretty funny eye rolling from that one. BTW- For charging up lume, I find that using one of my car's HID headlights works really well. You can really get those markers charged up in just a few seconds...
By-Tor Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 When I have a day off and I'm at home, I often wear and rotate different watches during the day, and don't even bother to set the time. Sometimes I have to ask my fiancee what the correct time is. Geeky, eh?
rolex001 Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Good one Ubi - the headlight probably emits a very low wavelength/high freq. beam - blue light I guess? The bluer the better. IR doesn't charge the lume at all...

I also attribute this behavior to working with engineers all day. Done that with the tap to show my daughter how a tachemetre scale works other than speed, she was 6 at the time, but kids ask questions dont they and i hate it when people dont answer with a good answer, she did regret the time shea asked why the blue christmas lights were not as bright as the wight light, then it gott all into freqencys but in the end she undersood how radar and sonar work,
Toadtorrent Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 I use the tach functions on my Speedy and Daytona, compensating for a smaller measured distance to find out if my 1 year old is getting faster walking across the kitchen.

IR doesn't charge the lume at all... I think Audi uses a 4,000K temp HID/xenon; pretty blue in terms of hue
Ztech Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 I'm sure glad to know I'm amongst like minded folks here.
Ztech Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Sometimes when I'm out helping my buddy coach his cubscout troop I gather the buggers around a circle, pull out my watch and say... "now let's syncronize watches". To this they look at me like I've been smoking the good stuff. You should see the looks on their faces.
