Hi guys,

so a while back I purchased a Masetro Historic black calf. Upon receiving the strap and mounting it, I can't help but notice the smell of the strap. it has a much stronger scent than any of the straps that I own, and it is downright annoying! I can be typing on the keyboard and still smell the strap from that far away. Is there anything that I can do to get rid of, or to shield the smell of the strap? I do like the strap that I would like to wear it again, but so far, it has been such a put off because of the smell. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Spray some deodorant on it.

Woody, why don't you take the strap to a shoe repair. I am sure they have something to get rid of the bad smell. I can imagine. I wouldn't want to wear it either until you can get rid of this scent!

Good luck..

You need to cook it :) (Microwave for example)

Better yet, use protein cleaner!

The smell will eventually degrade after awhile. Maybe put some calvin klein eternity. Start off with a light spray first, and put the strap next to silicon gel.

Oh, microwave was a joke...I hope no one do that...

(Well, I don't know what effect it will have on the strap, maybe it will shrink it, make it harder/softer, darker color, etc. If someone tried it, don't be shy, share your experience with us! )

You are kidding right?

This is how leather smells.. Maybe you are used of the no-smell plastic rep straps and now the difference is huge :p

I wonder if that particular strap could have come from a piece of leather that had not cured properly during tanning and so is in fact starting to rot?

put it inthe freezer for a day or two and it will go away.

I tried that with my trainers once, cos I was told it would get rid of the smell.

Didn't work but I got some funny looks skating down the street going for the paper one June morning.

No, Kostas, I am not kidding. I have other leather straps, and not rep ones, and none of them smell as strong as this Maestro strap. I just don't know why. You really can literally smell the strap while you are typing. If it does not do that, then it would not have bothered me as much. And I don't know what to do, since this started to become of having fun on the topic thing. The shoe repair seems viable, but at the same time, an extreme measure I think. Imagine the person that I bring it to, for treatment on 2 small strap. But for sure, none of my other leather strap smells, maybe it is of a different kind of leather? I don't know. Does anyone else have one of these Maestro Historic strap that can verify? Thanks.

I'll try to ask this in the most tactful way possible, but do you ever smell the....umm.... strap.... when you're NOT wearing it?

No offense taken guys. Maybe I should reword my title as not stink, but rather, strong smell or something. I do not want to use bleach, cause I don't what color is going to do to the strap. I tried to use just general soap last night, but the smell is still there. oh well, we'll keep the topic open, perhaps some "leather specialists" will give me some more insight on this, am I right?

Hmmm, you clearly have an increased sensitivity to odours in this particular case, leather.

This is a result of your olfactory and pheromone receptors becoming hyperactive to your circulating DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) signalling your brain that you are experiencing an unpleasant smell. Very strange, hmmm....

Woody......I think you may be pregnant!!!
