Rolex 1655, Steve Mc Queen: Gathering informations
docblackrock replied to Stephane's topic in The Rolex Area
Ah the 1655, a long-admired friend of mine. I'm fortunate enough to have been able to handle a gen on several occasions, and all I can say is this... Sadly, aside from spunking an obscene amount of money on a Viet case, there's no alternative that can accept gen parts, but as the guys have shown here, you can get a very decent chimaera that's aesthetically halfway there. Oh and one rep version Don has omitted here is this from Honpo: -
Well DW alignment may or may not be an issue, but since I use vintage overlays, it can always be adjusted.
-
I acknowledge your take on it, and a very valid argument it is too. However, sadly it is not one shared by, or in any way reflective of the ethos behind the production of this watch. There's nothing noble or even poignant about it. Just a soulless marketing idea in extremely poor taste designed to cash in on consumers' morbid fascination with the subject.
-
Only one way to waste $400 on a dial to find out..... Oh ok then, yes it will - the real question is about whether it fits the case more than the movt at any rate.
-
What? No special caseback with a Cousteau-esque little ship silhouette? Think of the creative possibilities. A jaunty little angle to the hull maybe? Offending iceberg in the background? Some peripheral bobbing 'heads' in the water even? A limited edition series of 1513 would be perfect. You could even give each one a name. Literally. The marketing boys must be kicking themselves.....
-
Appreciate this is a 'new rep' thread, but there must have been half a dozen threads over the last year or two about this abhorrent watch. Gen or rep, I would not be seen dead wearing it (pun intended to illustrate my point). Proof positive that we live in an increasingly soulless society.
-
I know of one in existence that may surpass that - a certain Italian whose 6541 project started with casually finding (as you do)...a genuine case Perhaps he will step up and post some pics?
-
Stilty the 1019 may be a Milgauss in name but is so far removed from being Rolex Sports, it's a bit of a joke. Shares nothing with it's predecessor the 6541 and that includes case, and yes crown size (6541 takes a 6mm twin). It was just a DJ for nerds who happened to work in magnetised environments
-
Rob, you have a PM I think we have a few wires, if not crossed here, then uninsulated at least.
-
Laughing yes.....at the staggeringly exaggerated creative licence used in that epic poem to cover up the REAL truth behind your good fortune. Hmmm, it's strange but I haven't heard from A since that time. Apparently he was last seen at a bar with a large thickset man with dubious facial hair who called himself CrazeeSaleMan
-
Nanuq, don't worry, I have a more *cough* errr, 'efficient' plan to relieve you of your vintage horde....
-
Problem with the MBW 6541 has always been the crown/tube : case alignment - the crown is so far below the mid-axis it looks ridiculous. I almost bought one myself last year but I couldn't get past that issue, so stuck with my modded thin Sub case 'Gaussy. Curious to know if there is a 'new' version so please post pics. As for inserts, MY is your man Nanuq - you really are the resident Crack Pimp of Vintage Crystals aren't you?

Anyone get the SLR yet? Review and Pictures?
docblackrock replied to TmeShare's topic in The Tag Heuer Area
Looks like you're going to be the one to share those experiences then doesn't it -
I agree with your first comment. But the second....you seem to be implying that Dani did so with intent. I really don't think that's true, merely a throwaway by-the-by as part of his tale of woe. By 'associating' you with the fact, what does HE have to gain? Sincerely I mean you no offence, but I don't think you're doing yourself any favours here being so oversensitive.

These kind of stories make me sad. Sad that the sufferers are so apathetic about their loss and oblivious to their stupidity. Has it not occurred to him that amongst this fellow bunch of 'Risti, the guys he had drinks with, there's one opportunistic thieving piece of scum? Maybe next time there's a GTG planned, he should think twice about attending. Only consolation is he has posted the serial no. if someone is stupid enough to post it for sale. If that were me, I'd be reporting it to the police and Panerai UK, as well as paying a visit to the preowned dealers in Hatton Court, putting the word out on 111H/1643.
-
Chinawhites No sympathy whatsoever. Not as if he was robbed cold. Didn't his parents teach him to look after things? If he got so [censored] that he forgot to put his 111 back on his wrist after the obligatory 'table shot', then more fool him. If he then got even more [censored] that the next morning he couldn't remember what he'd done with it, then that's not the only thing he should be checking. Wallet and a trip to the doctor's may be in order

Rob, when I first read this I admit I did think you were overreacting a little. You are certainly not implicated, and I don't think anyone (certainly not anyone you choose to do work for anyway) would directly associate you = stolen goods = Canadian customs, and think twice about sending stuff to you. Dani is venting and you can't blame him for that, it must be gutting, and I'm sure there'll be no effect on your business. Just one of those things, the risks you take when shipping across borders, especially continental ones in my experience. However, I agree with you re. it being most likely tampered with either in Norway, or somewhere in transit (airport exit or entry point) prior to arrival and processing by Customs at your end. And on reflection, yes a quick word in private could have meant your sensibilities would have remained unruffled, but I'm sure you can see Dani did not mention you as anything other than an aside. We've all said or written throwaway details, things that in hindsight may have been best left omitted in the first place.
-
Well aren't you just a warm and fuzzy specimen Lack of AR being an obvious tell? Pfff, keep telling yourself that if it stops you grinding your teeth at night. Nowhere near as obvious as the crappy datefont (unless you have one of those DWs) and grossly inaccurate running second hand on your beloved Nautilus though Like a gen crown/tube, ARing the cyclops (and it is possible and will be available soon) will make the 116710 a 'perfect' rep so to speak.
-
Yep we sure do No need to 'fix' - rep bezel has 24 'clicks' - same as gen.
-
As is the gen, trust me you don't want an auto movement on you wrist when you rip out a 3-iron from the light rough Not to mention this weighs about 55g (Ti case) and has a destro crown for comfort sake. All in all, a very good rep - whether it's your cup of coffee or not, it's a much better look than the old black (or *shudder* white) dial "Golf" watch.

Is Angus out for the count? What's up with Puretime?
docblackrock replied to tanya's topic in General Discussion
Seconded.... -
Well it seems some dealer photos are better (and show more accurate details) than others And yes, I'm reliably informed they are the same version...
-
Pedant Hardly normal configuration though is it with the chrono running. Gives a false impression of how the movement works. Some numpty will think it's a quartz and then take it back to the AD saying the 'second hand has stopped', hey it's moving in the pic on their website'.

No need to panic folks, heard back from him last night.
