You got your answer. Gently press the release while inserting/turning the stem.
If that doesn't work or if you tried to jam the stem in, you may have knocked the lever out of it's seat.
removal of the hands, dial and date disc will be needed to re-set it.
Or send it to a qualified watchmaker to fix.

Your crown came apart. Easy fix. Get some loc-tite blue on the threads, insert the spring and screw it back into the crown (Short side into crown).
Let set overnight and you are good to go.
Oops, my bad. Those crowns are press fit with internally threaded tubes. New crown needed, sorry.
Anybody have a spare or know where I can find a stem?
Has what looks like an owl for a Stamp under the balance. It is a circle and 2 lines that look like ears.
I believe it is a DG movement with 24hr hand (Explorer II)
