  1. CM is a genuinely great guy, very knowledgable and has great taste in fine timepieces!
  2. Now that is a gorgeous dial! I think I do prefer white over black; the overall contrast really lends to a unique look. If this wears more like a 40/41mm watch, it's one that I may have to consider.
  3. Thanks for the kind words, one and all! It's been a while since I've been this excited about a modern Sub; the assembly and build quality of this newest generation of Sub is a welcomed change in my eyes. For the first time ever, genuine parts fit without modification; everything that I've updated thus far has been a 1 to 1 exchange. Somehow, I have to secretly admit that the ease of mods has made things almost too easy; total time invested thus far is very little, aside from searching for the actual parts (which has been the greater consumer of my time). As for questions- @jmt- The hands on this watch are okay; the seconds hand is the one that bugs me the most as it's just a slight be too short (I'd say +/- 1mm). I'll need to go through my spares to see what I have; perhaps I have something that will work in it's place. @millemiglia- I would opt for a genuine crystal as a viable replacement. There's just something about the overall clarity, the signed crown at 6:00 with the service etch, the beveled edge and the cyclops that really just add the finishing touch. Only downside is that they tend to be a bit pricey. @cib0rgman- The dial is a pretty good duplication of the gen: The printing and fonts are nice and crisp. The markers even have that nice, subtle gen-like finish to them. Comparing to my gen Daytona dials, the 'glow' to the metal surrounds looks pretty dang close. Not sure if they're WG like gen or not, but they're nicely finished. Overall, a very nice, comfortable watch on the wrist. I could get used to this Cheers, R
  4. At one point, $500 was fair, but values have retracted a bit. I see them sell for around $350 - $380 for NOS.
  5. Yessir. Should press right in as-is. No shaving or trimming necessary...
  6. I seem to have overlooked a very important watch from my list- As far as somewhat affordable goes... That is one that I'll likely end up buying sooner or later...
  7. As someone who has done this very task several times... I myself find that it's not an issue, as long as the watch you are building is one that you will keep Personally, I try to find movements a la carte without having to cannibalize a complete watch (I was able to do this with my first El Primero Daytona, along with a few other projects like my Tudor Sub, etc). However, if I have to decommision an old gen for the movement to bring my project to fruition, I'll do what I have to do. Is it right, or wrong? Well, the way I look at it- I'd likely be wearing the watch I build over the watch I take apart (I don't look for the desirable watches to use as donors). Or, maybe better put, I wouldn't take apart a watch I'd wear Since the projects I build are generally for keeps, I don't bother with changing the bridges or signed rotors, etc. as those stay behind a closed caseback. I have no desire to sell my projects, and these items don't bother me, so I don't spend the money to upgrade these parts. Cheers, R
  8. The balance bridge is indeed a very nice feature of the Rolex, as is the microstella adjustment in the balance itself. However, the one real weakness of a Rolex caliber is that they use an axle for the winding rotor instead of ball bearings. Over time, this axle wears and allows the rotor to shift from side to side, thus damaging the bridges, plates, etc. The debris from this wear is then distributed throughout the movement- gear train, etc. which then requires a service as the performance of the watch is then compromised and at potential risk for further damage. If Rolex went to ball bearings, I think their design would be significantly better, and more robust.
  9. Took a few moments out of the weekend to snap some new pics of the Sub Current modification list is as follows: -Genuine crystal ring -Genuine bezel washer -Genuine bezel click -Genuine bezel ring -Genuine insert -Genuine Cyclope 295C -Genuine crown -Old TW Best end links -WM9 outer first link (without the ref no. stamped) -Hollow midlink bracelet links from a noobmariner -WM9 clasp I'm not too pleased with these hands; those will be the next items changed, I think. Thanks for looking! Cheers, R
  10. Beyond a work of art! Ziggy has built a real masterpiece here!
  11. Damn.... I'm going to have to crack one of my cases open... Maybe this weekend
  12. Well, on my way home, I stopped by the AT&T store and signed up for service; did the plan for just the SIM card and no contract or commitment required Got home, popped in the SIM and we're in business. Everytihng's crystal clear, so I'm pleased At any rate... A couple of quick, messy shots. Sorry they aren't the best... Watch for scale: For my needs, this phone is perfect; I didn't even sign up for the text or data plan. Voice only for me, as I somehow doubt I'll be using it much for even that. Perhaps the cost of the phone is a bit much for my requirements, but what the hey; you only live once right? Some impressions: -First and foremost; this phone is heavy. Very substantial feel and presence in the hand. -Some of the keys aren't finished to the best of quality. I wonder if I can maybe polish them out, or if it's even worth trying? -Ti for the phone casing shows every hand and fingerprint possible. Actually, I could almost swear that if I even think of fingerprints, they'll show up Good thing for the polishing cloth. My wife is already giving me a hard time for constantly wiping the Ti parts down. Operation seems to be quite easy and simple. My 4yo son has figured out how to operate certain functions on the phone already Overall, not a bad purchase for something that I probably needed a long time ago. Cheers, R
  13. Thanks, sir! I'll try to get some shots later today And yeah... My wife and I were joking about me going so long without a cell phone when it arrived. She's always had her's, so she was ribbing me about stepping up to the new millennium by buying some sort of fancy new gizmo whirlydingy phone. What a girl! Capice, I have to admit that I'm an idiot when it comes to these things. I honestly couldn't tell ya if there's GPS, but somehow I doubt it. Nothing in any of the menus I've scrolled through. It seems to be pretty basic in terms of gadgets and techie stuffs. Definitely no Windows OS on it.
  14. Steve, That's a modern pearl for sapphire models There are two types- Vintage: and modern: Biggest difference is that the vintage is a tiny little acrylic dome filled with luminous from the back (tritium, luminova or superluminova for current service replacements). The modern sapphire pearls have the white gold surround, and the luminous is covered by a small dome of some sort of 'glass' (material is unknown to me) Hope ths helps!
  15. Thanks, Maciek for helping to facilitate availability to forum members! Just a quick shot for now... T'is a very cool piece... And, believe it or not, this is the first time in 5 years (+/-) that I've not only owned a cell phone, but will have cellular service Hard for a lot of my friends to think, but I never had much need or desire for a cell phone, especially since it was a good reason to avoid having an electronic leash to work (think quiet weekends and holidays). However, with kids, and a lifestyle that's starting to get more active because of the munchkins, it's the right time to come back, methinks. Now, time to shop services... Cheers, R
  16. R- I agree with TT; perhaps when it comes down to it, it's not the surroundings that matter, but rather those you surround yourself with that does. An end of an era it may be... But it's also the start of a new one...! All the best!
  17. Very sorry to hear, Dave I wish you all the best.
  18. Looks great, R! The faded tone is a nice compliment to the vintage SD; even more so as it looks as though the dial is also lightly faded as well? As for pearls... A nice vintage pearl can also add a lot of character as well (old pic) (new pics) Looking good, sir!
  19. Congrats, buddy! It's a long path to get there, but well deserved! Cheers, R
  20. Hopefully, he didn't pay much for it Probably not worth more than $70 - $130 depending. At least, that's how much they can be printed for...
  21. Great job on these and great price! Very well done...
  22. Tourby, My intention was to point out how good the teeth are on your crown in comparison to gen. It looks really good!
  23. Hmmmm... Looks pretty good to me. Compare to a gen crown...
  24. The biggest giveaway is the red Not a production color, and in fact, the red dials are a debated subject in their own right. However, there are a number of other 'tells'; the print quality, the fonts used, the coronet; if we had better photos, I bet I could identify a few others with the subdial finishing, overall stepping of the dial planes, etc. I'd be curious to know how much the seller is asking, as that would also be a good indicator of how much he knows about vintage Daytona dials in general
