  1. Hi all, found this pic on a French site. The middle one: Never seen it before - is it simply a 6541 variant with smooth bezel? Any expert trivia appreciated. The smooth bezel's proportions remind of DJ2/DD2 btw... thanks! mg
  2. Hi guys, for your consideration, a proposition from the department of Ken Sato-mind Rolex fantasy assuming to be gen Goal: An old-skool tool-beater with contemporary size. Imagine if you will... (All parts beat-up and repolished including plexi) 41mm DJ2 case with rolexrolex sanded off, lugs drilled and custom dome plexi (personally I think bezel is too wide. Should be trimmed a mm from inside perhaps?) Vintage bracelet, not necessarily this one Dial/hands like this (waterslide with old-skool "slightly fuct" vintage tritium style relume) and no product name 8mm Brevet (DSN) Any good as a low-key "don't ask-beater"? Should it be blasted!!? ?? mg
  3. With its digital functions it would be a highly practical beater, and the countdown bezel is extremely useful in everyday use IMO. Countdown answers "How many minutes until I promised I'd be back from the pub..." whereas elapsed time bezels merely answer "How long its been since I came to the pub.." So hopefully a cheaper model will be offered As many will know, Watcheden has one at $150. Digi looks very wrong, but probably works. However its got "needle-pushers" rather than crown-control, so you need to "prepare" to use it by getting hold of a pointy object/pen and then fiddle with both hands to use it... Watchedens version Gen (what a nice piece of kit that is): Definitely the fashion-watch I've considered the most to get gen in 2010 .02$ mg
  4. Thanks to both you guys for information and inspiration mg
  5. Don't laugh yet, please answer the question By vintage bracelet i mean for example Andrews 20mm. click me Thanks! mg
  6. Granted, the pic below is an OYSTER, however most Rolexes I've seen are called oyster-something so IMO it doesn't count. They always have "sub-brand" names such as SUBMARINER SEADWELLER or at least - and stretching the term - PRECISION. Intuitively I figure that -A- the above watch was made before the era of sub-brands (dismissed) -B- that there was severe inconsistency within Rolex SA, -C- that Rolex catered for specific institutional customers (such as the military) who didn't want messy dials or -D- You tell me. Do we know? And do we know a source of information on no-name Rolexes? I like them. Thanks for any help (damn gotta go do xmas) mg EDIT: Or is it simply a repaint...
  7. Maybe there is some confusion of the word trend. The trend is smaller watches although most people still prefer big watches and the major brands release big watches. They're milking the PREVIOUS trend, which was big watches. As they should. Watch trends - especially for luxury brands, move very slowly. That being said, now that big watches have become a category, obviously they won't disappear. I think the point is that after the Fiddy, Uboat, BR, Ploprof etc...the NEW IDEA is smaller watches. .2$ mg
  8. Hi all, found a complete 5500 case set and dial so am finally building an AirKing. Do we know where to source hands like these, preferably fitting a 28xx movement? thanks for any helpful hints! mg
  9. ChiMan, that AK idea sounds sourceable even by me, will do a blue AK project Thanks!! mg
  10. Just a quick reply now, will add after digesting what you're saying - TOTALLY love the blue dialed AK as well!! It's like a pup dog: Friendly, non-threatening, simple, true
  11. Wanna thank you guys for the replies - having read them I guess I won't attempt doing it. Been on the bay a lot recently, trying to find a gen RLX case/movt set in order to build something, initially either a (gen) AirKing or a (franken) Space-Dweller. But to be honest most of the vintage Rolex cases look the same to me, however there are a LOT of different case classifications (5500, 1500, 15000 etc) and it doesn't mean don't anything to me - I'd be bound to miss crucial details regarding compatability of parts or price of key parts. Panerai is so much easier! Trying to create wiggle-room I thought a Tudor case would be easier...ETA movt, availability of hands, "gen rolex parts" outta box, waterproof, already "vintageized"... just swap dials and maybe caseback... I know there's never a really easy way to this and that we RWG members should largely do our own research, which I try to do, however: Tips for an easy-fix Tudor-based Airking, Spacedweller or other 34mm+ "boyscout Rolex" would be greatly appreciated thanks mg
  12. hi all, basic knowledge to many I'm sure, glad to be here to learn. Do we know wether its' possible to install a gen rolex daydate dial on this watch? thanks! mg
  13. Yeah great piece! Smaller watches are back! Having been into big macho watches for five years or so I now find myself irresistibly drawn to this: The best news - it's one of my all-time favorite Rolexes - and it's cheap to get the gen mg
  14. RWG just got even more interesting looking forward to seeing fellow members' 6542 projects mg
  15. Rolli, I trust you like a dog and you know it. Still I hope it might be possible to rep this by using a titanium case and applying a particular PVD process based on SLOB learning? I guess no since you say it's impossible but am still keen on your answer :-) mg
  16. OK thanks guys. Again sorry about the pics (they were on the web). This is the info given by seller (who wants 250 bucks for it): mg
  17. Might be getting this - just want to affirm its gen:) It is, isn't it? Sorry about the pics - they're all I have:) thanks! mg
