  1. ??? Anybody know how the hands are translucent? plastic? mg
  2. I love them! mg
  3. As far as I have come to understand, the experts were ignored as far as the bezel is concerned. IMHO still a good value piece and an opportunity to deepen our pam collection. mg
  4. Yeah. That's the benefit of highly vintagized reps - before I found this forum I always assumed (probably rightly most of the time) that beat-up old Rolexes had to be gen What annoys me with Rolex is their lack of self-confidence as far as launching completely new models and movements is concerned. I understand the strategy, but as a "consumer" I'd like to see a super-dooper-smooth in-house-movement like the spring drive (smoothness being a tangible Rolex trait) on a innovative yet no-nonsense beater model. They seem to be very passive - as category leaders they have an obligation and an opportunity to take charge of the category. DSSD isn't motivated by leadership, but by fear of what others are doing. Best part of Rolex - the mythology, craftmanship and a few vintage models. 2c mg
  5. Very tasteful. Panerai should make a watch using the thermometer hand for secs mg LINK TO BONATI INTERVIEW FROM YACHT ONLINE REGARDING EILEAN
  6. Tried multi-quoting but failed. TeeJay - nice !! thanks jmb - excellent advice. :-D mg
  7. Nice! Thanks! mg
  8. Thanks Freddy, will have it tried. mg
  9. Thanks for the pics - interesting. I know the gen 1655 bezel wasn't lumed:-) and yeah, its for a project - considering a lumed bezel to make 24hrs reading easier around the clock. What I´m wondering is whether there's enough depth to a normal rep 1655 bezel engraving to fill substantially enough with lume? Unlike dial lume I suppose the lume in engraving must NOT be protruding as it would be worn off. Thinking about either black lume OR aged tritium (on grey beadblasted bezel/case) Any comments would be appreciated. Am I the only one stupid enough to consider this? mg
  10. They told me it was USD 750 for the case set (about 3 months ago). mg
  11. Hi Donerix It's smart to ask - that's how you learn. Just don't ask me, I couldn't tell my A$$ from my cyclops! However if you still want my advice, I'd say no, you need a coin-edge bezel, and I'd also say that 6542 is the holy grail and doing it right is the way to ensure you won't regret anything later. Lastly I'd say that you need to tap into Freddys knowledge in order to get it right :-) mg
  12. Hi donerix, I believe maybe this one could be your base for case/bezel ring, however there might occur a height-problem with the bakelite insert - Freddy would be able to confirm this (he has has written thoroughly on this subject). Good luck! 6542 case & bezel ring? mg
  13. Love this watch. Can't wait to see it in person. Is it me, or is the two-layer dial a wee tad flat? mg
  14. Very nice!! Love the matching yellows. And your avatar. As they say; wear it well, mg
  15. Damn!!!! as they say, wear it well. Nice!!!!!! mg
  16. Agree with you my friend. To me, the Mare Nostrum is so well designed that it transcends "design". It's just... so generic, so "boring" (in a very positive sense) that it distinguishes itself from all other watches. IMHO! mg EDIT: Needs a good-old blasting to fulfill its potential though, regardless of the gen!
  17. Well said Jkay, will address that mg
  18. You know, gavidoc, I agree with your opinion on the the bezel. Due to notorious impatience, I tried polishing the indexes off some time ago (with wrong tools) and gave up, now it has been beadblasted and it will remain indexed. Date - largely agree again. However having an inverted dw w/silver on black and a nice cyclopsed crystal going on... You know, at some stage, the show must go on but there will be new projects Damn I wish I didn´t have to outsource most of the work, I simply have no skills in the horological dept at all! I value your input, thanks for getting involved, mg
  19. OK here's what I'll be going for. Obviously the coronet, logo and writing isn't finished. The coronet wil be lumed vintage tritium like indexes. Anything that could be improved or changed, let me know. Shown next to NDT 1655: Thanks to those who chipped in! Now to the waterslide decal phase mg
  20. ...I suppose it can be done, but have any of us seen it, do we have any pics or experiences with it? Wear-and tear-proofness? thanks for any feedback, thomas
  21. Interesting stuff southcoast - thanks. You know, the coloured-letter-bezel... I don't really know. Didn´t like the US Marines model bezel, and have seen some Pam Daylight and Daytona mods that don't really strike me as being toolstyle enough somehow, although I know this is a contradiction: Most "gear" is designed to cater for fast thinking. Maybe its because of the combo w/ respectively shiny steel or shiny PVD. Hey, I´ll probably do it when I've had the watch for some time and want to mod it some more. Thought about luming the bezel, what do you think? Will look into the arrow tip issue! That being said, hopefully the entire secs hand will be an arrow in itself (my sketch isn't pointed enough). BTW, found these old Rolex model names on the web; Air Lion, Air Tiger, Airgiant, SkyRocket, Falcon, Orchid, Observatory, Tridor, Athlete , Commando, Turtle Timer, Canadian, Empire, Oyster Lipton, Rolex Scientific, Rolex Everest, Tudor Advisor, Oyster Junior Sport, Oyster Raleigh, Oyster Commander, Oyster Recorda, Oyster Edison, Oyster Grenfell, Oyster Shipmate, Oyster Standard.... ...many fashionably oldskool names there, most of them rich in Rolex´generously self-proclaiming alpha-male spirit (apart from the Turtle Timer and Oyster Lipton perhaps, and the ever-gay notion of the shipmate. To be honest, I was going for a Commando II on this one, but then there came an idea of adverts and retrofitted product placement in an epic movie from 1977 - stay tuned. Anyway, the listed Rolex models may inspire fellow "what if" geeks mg
  22. Thanks, gimme a holler if you change your mind or come up with something better!!! ah, nipping out for some right now as a matter of fact. Back later mg
  23. Hi guys, here's another tweak, only halves this time. Hopefully you´ll be able to imagine the design on a full dial. The left one: Long "regular hours" indexes and cubic dots for irregular hours, long seconds. The right one: Normal "regular hours" indexes and a series of cubic dots that are both regular and irregular hours, normal seconds. Any of these worth pursuing? IMO its starting to get cluttered Thanks mg
