No longer oldtimer, more ancient remembrance of RWG birth.
Nanuq replied to omni's topic in The looney bin
Omni!! How's it going brother? Boy it's nice to see you here today. -
That's a tasty piece! Tell us more!
-
That's a gen bear for sure, a nice big fattie! The Frosty Flake was my last build before the Big Gonzo, it's a Phong case, gen 702, gen T39, gen dial, gen FF insert, the works.

The midnight moose-flake shot
-
Heck, a brown bear just walked through sniffing for the moose!

I went for a mtn bike ride this afternoon and didn't see a single bear OR moose. So here I am at home tonight, getting ready for my Midnight picture du jour, and there's a moose in my yard. Go figure!

Velkommen til vårt hjem! Godt å se deg på RWG.

Nice! Twist their tails, and those beasts can MOVE They can also float...

Before you know it you'll be patrolling my coast... the Bears have been playing with us too.

This is the impossible-to-photograph piece for today. No matter what you do, the gilt dial looks white.

Use the one that doesn't attract and hold dirt. White Lightning is good, Boeing Boeshield BOE9 is good too.

Gentlemen, thank you for serving. From now on I think we should nickname A_Dave as BUFF.

Truer words were never spoken. I'm wrapping up my third go at a Big Crown; the previous ones were very, very good. But this will be a Holy Grail piece and it has to be perfect. I have a small stable of watches that are intended to be abused, so the requirements list is small. They MUST be waterproof and cheap enough I don't care if I smash it. If they look pretty good, that's good enough for me. The others are long term keepers so they get more respect, fewer mtn bike crashes, and they have to look "correct". Gouges and dents are encouraged. Then there are the gens. They get better treatment, hard use, good maintenance, and they are the Nemesis ... unfortunately they look so good, everything else looks bad. So they make me up the ante with the other pieces, but I have to remember what they are: disposable fun pieces. I try to keep them in their categories and that helps.

.....or if you want to trade it for even rarer "Hooked 5" fattie MkIII insert!

My daughter is working with kids in the remote Alaskan bush this summer. She's been getting some really great exposure and I thought you guys would like it. Bush, Alaska is comparable to 3rd world countries in many ways; many villages don't have sewage treatment facilities, police, a post office, a store, nothing. It's extremely harsh survival. It's more remote than you can wrap your head around. Consequently, the Native culture is very different than the white man's culture. They call it the "song" of the people. In New York for example, the tempo of the "song" is fast and staccato. In the deep south it's slow and drawn out. White man has many "notes" in his song, with lots of ups and downs, from squealing at a newborn baby, to deep throated conversations between men. The Native "song" has two notes... when mama raises her note to the second one, everyone scatters. It's a slow tempo. They are intensely aware of the spirit of the land they borrow from their animal cousins. As part of her orientation they showed a video to help explain the difference in how we see the Native culture, and how the Native culture sees ours ... how their clock runs slower and how they "feel" more. I loved it. This was produced by some Native kids here, the opening was filmed right at the foot of my mountain. Then it goes in an unexpected direction Watch this and hear what's in between the visuals. See our world through his eyes. Feel the frightening fast tempo of our song. Watch him celebrate his victories, even though they seem very small to us. This will help you know these good people better. You're in for a treat!

It looks just like Alaska ... even down to the small plants. We call them crowberries (pink flowers) and kinnikinnik (red berries). Don't worry about being "antisocial", have you noticed that ALL of my pictures are solo outings? It's the Viking wandering blood. I don't mind being around people, but when I'm in the woods, I'm alone. There are places to go and things to explore.

Well there's always the odd chance a carnival worker filling balloons will get trapped inside a semi trailer with his helium tanks while at the top of Mt Everest, then someone will realize the problem and airlift the semi trailer to the bottom of Death Valley to free him, and after a month of trying will give up ... whereupon he'll get airlifted, semi trailer and all, back to the top of Mt Everest, where his friendly Sherpa will realize he's had the key in his pocket the whole time. You can only imagine the horror as the Sherpa opens the semi door, to be greeted by a crystal popping off the carnie worker's watch, with the force of a de-fizzed soda pop bottle. Hey......... it can happen. So we need HEVs.

Something else to consider... think of the insert not as a flat piece of metal, but as a segment of a cone. As the cone becomes less flat and more pointy, its outer diameter at its base becomes smaller. You can use that to your advantage. Try pressing the insert down over the neck of a bottle and you can deform it into more of a conical shape, and it will snap right in. Work with the angle of the cone and the ease of its fit until you get it where you want it.

Is that Obsessive-Compulsive-Destructive?

Good on ye, Bill. Most people are too polite (cough: wussy) to say no. I have no qualms at all telling people they may not play with my toys. If you want email notification of replies to topics, try using the expanded reply function (there's a clicker button below the reply box) and to the right there are check boxes to allow you to follow the topic. Maybe that will help?
