  1. Well said, Ronin. Remember that accurate torque settings are achieved with thread lube. It's a fine thing in my book to "accidentally" get some silicon gasket lube on the caseback threads as it screws on. Most people don't know it, but a fastener is simply a spring that gets stretched slightly. You tighten it to achieve a small amount of elastic deformation in the fastener. When it's overtightened you get plastic deformation and the fastener is permanently stretched and ruined. In the case of watch backs, probably the threads will be ruined. Same with delicate crown threads. I cannot get a caseback screwed on tight enough with Gorilla tape to damage the gasket or threads, but I can easily get it tight enough to pass 3 bar of pressure test. By-Tor could probably accomplish 50 bar.
  2. The last three pieces I had serviced at watchmakers, I've been able to remove the backs with Gorilla tape, and each passed pressure tests after their servicing. You just gotta be motivated sufficiently.
  3. And that crystal for yours too!

    9315 Oyster

I thought of you when I put this up, Dizz.
  6. Regarding the stir-fry rehaut, how about buying one of each and putting the GMT guts in the 6541? Its rehaut actually looks pretty good, though the midcase is far too thick. Two steps forward, one step back.

  9. Folded 9315 on the bay right now with 380s for $350 BIN.
  10. No worries Jojo, I've got my eye on something else FAR more tasty.
  11. That case and its "softened" edges is just over the top. We are lucky people to have Ubi walking among us.
  12. I use wadded up tape, and have never come across a back I can't open. Tapes differ however, and you'll want a really industrial grade tape for some of the really tight ones. Once in awhile I have to resort to "Gorilla" brand duct tape. I wrap it around three fingers, sticky side out, until I make a nice hunk. Then I press it into a pear shape and CRAM it against the caseback as I turn, held against my opposite palm. Be careful, you'll lose skin from your knuckles if you slip.
  13. I'm thinking there's a very thin layer of painted-on radium for the lume.
  14. Or maybe that Sub is the one from the James Bond scene where they lower him into a vat of acid! Wait. Was that Austin Powers?
  15. Perhaps it's just the Mother Of All Tropical Dials? Maybe what we're seeing here is very, very, verrrrrry, VERY pale brown.
  16. Where was this when I was rebuilding my Honda engines?!
  17. *updates max bid amount to $1,001*
  18. They already tried the Microsoft Watch, with limited success.
  19. GMTs went 6542 (no CGs) then 1675, then 16750 "transitional" and then I lose interest. Any of these will have the domed plexiglas and thin case.
  20. Jumpin' Jiminy, that's one to buy and wear! Got 'er on my watch list now...
  21. Hmmmmm. My max bid was $100 and ut had been bid up to $30 at ~18 hours before auction end. He canceled my bid and it ended at $1 and zero bids. Someone else must gave had his bids pulled too.
  22. The size of the links and rivets in combination with the big pushers just gives it a whole industrial steampunk look. I LIKE IT!!
  23. Yep, I was thinking of you Dizz, and your preference for old/gnarly/trashed bracelets. Hope you can scoop this one up!
  24. Did I mention it comes with gen endlinks?
