  1. Okay, you're punking us, right? Let me look around... where's the camera... hmmmmm, no camera. Are you serious? You were just HANDED this watch? *klunk* <--- Nanuq falls over unconscious Praetor is right, that's a 6542 GMT. The only GMT with no crown guards. Good LORD that's a fine watch. Okay ship us some more photos. Then we'll give you the low-down on what to do next. I have a Submariner from the same era and there is one person I trust to tear it down, service it, fix any ugly dial lume (if at all) and to put it back in the best condition it can be in. But first, more photos! Oh, and congratulations!
  2. Nice guess but it's not a 1665, the case is too thin, as is the bezel. A 5513? Check the crown guards. Are they "droopy" enough? They look almost like my 1665 crown guards... but not quite. Here's the 1665 for comparison:
  3. Which one? Come on, those are Skillz... make them Mad Skillz. And tell the crowd why you think it's a 'Flake? Doesn't this angle make you think 1680 Sub???
  4. Here's a little test to see who's got Mad Skillz. Look at this profile and tell us what make and model it is. The gauntlet is tossed!
  5. Your browser is hosed. Try shutting down the browser, clearing cache and bringing the browser back up. It should come right back.
  6. Bobby, There are some things I will play with as reps, but when it comes to my life, nothing beats real gear. Especially if you're exposed to genuinely cold weather, a parka will save your life. Do not rely on second best. For that reason, don't buy TNF. They were good 20 years ago but they've rested on their laurels too long. Sure, their Himalayan parka is still nice but forget the price. And for anything but the most extreme conditions you'll sweat into the 800 fill down and it loses its insulation ability. You cannot go wrong with the "three Ms" ... Mountain Hardwear, Marmot and Moonstone. I wear Moonstone shells because they simply WILL NOT wear out. Bulletproof Gore-tex. Mountain Hardwear makes the warmest sleeping bags, period. Try a King Tut sometime. Marmot makes (IMHO) the best parkas. I use the Whitehorse parka for camping down to -40F and it's never let me down. Plus it's waterproof with taped seams so your down stays dry. And it costs about the same as TNF. Marmot Whitehorse parka Another point: avoid parkas with the soft, tearable outer layer. Yes, they stuff nicely but that matters to like, 10 people. The rest of us want a coat that does not tear and leak feathers.
  7. Sorry, no... it's in the case of the local watchmaker. He's the only guy in town that really does watch repairs. Everyone else is a battery swapper. He's old-school, from Russia, and his Crankiness Meter is perpetually set on 11. So it's kind of like the Soup Nazi, I want to keep him happy so he'll keep fixing my watches. Taking a camera in there might bring back the memories and we don't want to go there.
  8. I just chuck mine in a bucket of boiling water and watch for bubbles. Unfortunately every single one of them has tons of bubbles. I don't get it.
  9. Boy that's a heck of a watch right out of the box. It wasn't that long ago something like that was simply unavailable. Now you can just order one up and whango-zango you've got a great piece. Nice!
  10. Outrageously cool! You solved the bezel insert problem to take it over the top... first one of those I've seen. Nicely done!
  11. 12. Wahoo! This is great. Nicely done.
  13. No THIS is a bear walking past. On his way to the coffee shop, you can see it in his expression.
  14. Something new for the man from Alaska... yes the 455 endlinks are wrong but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.
  15. My ex-wife started taking flying lessons about the time our divorce started and she got her license shortly before our divorce was final, later that same year. Yesterday afternoon, she narrowly escaped injury in the aircraft she was piloting when she was forced to make an emergency landing in Southern Tennessee because of bad weather. Thank God our kids were with me this weekend. The NTSB issued a preliminary report, citing pilot error: Judy was flying a single engine aircraft in IFR (instrument flight rating) conditions while only having obtained a VFR (visual flight rating) rating. The absence of a post-crash fire was likely due to insufficient fuel on board. No one on the ground was injured. The photograph below was taken at the scene and shows the extent of damage to her aircraft. She was very lucky.

    Help Me!

I've alerted Admin. Look at the bottom of the screen toward the left, there's a place to "delete my cookies" Have you tried that, then cleared cache, cookies and Temp in your browser?

    Help Me!

I talked to Admin and yes there was a board upgrade. Try clearing your browser cache and deleting all cookies. Close the browser then try again. That ought to do it. Apparently there's a cookie for your original name (chronoluvvv) and it's unhappy with the board config, or something. Deleting the cookie ought to fix it.
  18. I found a paste called Flitz, it's amazing stuff. I rub it in with my thumb and it polishes great! You can get a mirror finish on a brushed bracelet if you're not careful.
  19. What a fantastic piece! And if I remember correctly, the "observatory grade" movements were very desirable for accuracy. Niiiiiiiiiiiice.
  20. Can anyone verify if the old "Pauls" 1680 case will work? Mine came with gen ETA beating inside so who knows?
  21. Gotta say this is the only thing I've regretted letting go. There was a rumor it had once belonged to Clapton but it was unprovable. It sure played nice though!
  22. What a nice thread for a Sunday. EE made some great stuff, and pretty much impossible to get. DW made vintage Daytonas slightly easier to come by, with slightly better subdial spacing. I've always liked the EE silver dial better than DW's. Thanks for the photos!
  23. Well said, all. When my daughter was that age she tripped running down a hill, did a faceplant and bit through her upper lip completely. It took a lot of stitches but now 9 years later you can barely, barely see a mark. It's only a memory now. My son has had almost as many stitches as I have, and he's perfectly well at 23. Active kids are happy kids. Activity brings battle scars and kids (boys) love to compare scars. That will be a war wound for him, sadly, the first of many. It's begun. But if you try to keep him safe from injury he will miss out on the joys of life, and that would be a deeper injury than the scars. Hang in there, you're hurting more than he is, and there's solace in that.
  24. If all else fails, dremel the head off one side, press out the bits and disassemble. To reassemble, find a nice sewing pin of the right length and diameter, press it through, nip off the extra length, leaving 1mm extra, then peen that extra down with a tack hammer into a "rivet head" shape.
